Essential reflections, learnings, and 100 pages of bonus material in the new Walkable City book

Walkable City which came out ten years ago was a breakout success as a book about the why and how of creating walkable vibrant downtowns and helped bring the concept of walkability into the mainstream consciousness AND breaking news, it is being re-released as a special 10th-anniversary edition with a new forward by Janette Sadik-Khan and as you will learn in this video over 100 pages of new content provided as an update to the original text. It is expected out by November 2022. Jeff and I talk about this and much more in this episode.

    Great interview, the only challenge is to have those who never understood the concept of walkability cities and walk away from that mindset of a car dependent infrastructure. Walkable cities shouldn't be a liberal or conservative standpoint but more of a stand of blurring out the lines that we can do better for ourselves and become great stewards to the natural wildlife in which has so far been neglected and yes I am on the conservative side but I am on board with this idea

I agree completely and it is noteworthy that two of the examples we talked about, Oklahoma City and Carmel are both conservative cities that realized that walkability was the way to go as far as revitalizing their completely dead downtowns... as for the sprawling outskirts, well that's another story.     @@ActiveTowns I think with rehauling retaking the cities from cars back to humans would indeed cut much out the expansion happening in cities like Houston, Phenix and Dallas and more dependable public transportation

    Great video! I live in Indianapolis and love the Monon trail! Really wish Indianapolis proper would do more to connect the city.

    Great conversation, John. Jeff Speck has a lot to say and says it very well. I will comment on the housing shortage. Denver has significant housing opportunities in downtown. However, Covid gutted the office environment and even in post Covid territory, I think it was recently reported that 25% of office space is still vacant and it will probably remain vacant for some time. Some office space lessors are starting to discuss the possibility of converting some of that space into housing. While not inexpensive, it is a better option than allowing it to remain vacant and more environmentally sound than tearing it down and starting over. Potentially, it could become a win-win for Denver Residents and the businesses of Downtown Denver that have relied on office workers for their livelihood. Thanks again.

    Thanks, Gary! Yeah, I think for many large city downtown business districts life may never be same... and yes, given the extreme housing shortage, it seems very silly to let the space sit vacant. What blows my mind are the new office buildings being constructed right now in so many of these cities - If I were the developer, I'd be tempted to pivot to at least partial residential if at all possible.     Coincidentally, I just reread Walkable Cities and I was passing through the section about cycling health benefits versus potential for accidents when I checked Twitter and saw Jeff’s unfortunate spill (to be clear, cycling is obviously still a vastly better idea in the aggregate). It was wild to see. If you come across this, Jeff, I hope you’re recovering well.

    Wilder urban freeways, more wild, less landscaped or manufactured, think microhabitats Include waterways, access lines, oints or skinny canals a fountainscapes

    Neighbourhoods without parking already exist, some of the old city centres in Europe don't have parking. I've lived in Arnhem for a while, and most of the downtown is car free, with a few parking garages and parking lots on the periferie, so if you live in the middle of it, the nearest parking space would be more than 300 metres away. Also, in Stockholm the old city is on an island with very little space for cars. Then there are also the Toronto Islands, which are car free.

    Yes. And hopefully, more cities will repeal their parking minimum laws, which require developers and business owners to build and provide parking, which just adds to the cost. Thanks so much for watching. Cheers! john

    The grade-separated, parking-protected cycle path is the fresh asphalt in the center of the thumbnail image, which is also the image featured at 30:00. The sidewalk is to the left, and car parking is to the right. This is a new facility in Somerville, MA. Cheers!
