    Just getting into FLy Fishing, and wanted to learn to tie my own flys. After searching and searching and watching and watching other videos that were a little too obtuse, I found yours. This was by far the best intro to fly tying!! thank you for keeping it simple and explaining things so well. I am now not so overwhelmed at the prospect of tying flys.

    Thank you sir! Most indepth fly tying tutorial i've seen so far. I've been fly fishing for years now and just decided to start tying my own flies. The steelhead made me do it! Lol.. All seriousness i got some tools and all the fly tying materials for my first fly pattern, hooks, etc. I am left handed so i just have to spin the vice around. I kinda figured i will mess up a few flies atleast starting out. I bought barbless hooks too so im good there. I'm pretty good with knots in general so im kinda thinkin i will try the whip finish trick by hand. I may just buy the tool incase. I am a little sketched about tying in rubber legs and using ostritch herl, etc but will see how it goes. I bought loon UV clear head cement too. Figure less wait times. I'm rigged and ready thanks for the tips! Fish on!

    Thank you for such an educational video, can you please explain the reason for using Wax when tying the flies?

  • @Gigharborflyshop

    @Gigharborflyshop

    Жыл бұрын

    Thanks Andrew. Wax is used usually to help slick materials stick to the thread. Especially when rubbing dubbing onto the thread, you can lose quite a bit of material and not get the desired effect. So the thread helps hold it there to enable more robust dubbing ropes. It’s also used when making dubbing loops for a similar reason.

    I tried so 4 times to use the whip finisher tool and felt awkward to use, so took me a few minutes to use. Today I wanted to do a few flies and first try it felt normal and cracked it out in a few seconds. Kind of neat how it just clicked. Next i will need to try the finger version, which im sure its the original way.
