Kurt, thanks for your feedback! I really appreciate it! Let me know if there’s any thing I can do to help you on your fly tying journey!
Just getting into FLy Fishing, and wanted to learn to tie my own flys. After searching and searching and watching and watching other videos that were a little too obtuse, I found yours. This was by far the best intro to fly tying!! thank you for keeping it simple and explaining things so well. I am now not so overwhelmed at the prospect of tying flys.

Great start for a beginner. The whip finisher, as clear as mud! But that's why I subscribed. Thanks

I bet I didn’t use a whip finisher the first 5 years of tying. Just used a series of half hitches to finish a fly!

never used a whip finisher. 2 half hitched, and done. 60 years flying salmon.

I've used the half hitch method a bit too but always put some lacquer or Loon UV glue on the head
Super helpful thanks.

Thanks! Glad you found it helpful! Are you just getting started tying flies or at it for a little bit?
Thank you sir! Most indepth fly tying tutorial i've seen so far. I've been fly fishing for years now and just decided to start tying my own flies. The steelhead made me do it! Lol.. All seriousness i got some tools and all the fly tying materials for my first fly pattern, hooks, etc. I am left handed so i just have to spin the vice around. I kinda figured i will mess up a few flies atleast starting out. I bought barbless hooks too so im good there. I'm pretty good with knots in general so im kinda thinkin i will try the whip finish trick by hand. I may just buy the tool incase. I am a little sketched about tying in rubber legs and using ostritch herl, etc but will see how it goes. I bought loon UV clear head cement too. Figure less wait times. I'm rigged and ready thanks for the tips! Fish on!

Thank you for such an educational video, can you please explain the reason for using Wax when tying the flies?
@Gigharborflyshop
Жыл бұрын
Thanks Andrew. Wax is used usually to help slick materials stick to the thread. Especially when rubbing dubbing onto the thread, you can lose quite a bit of material and not get the desired effect. So the thread helps hold it there to enable more robust dubbing ropes. It’s also used when making dubbing loops for a similar reason.
Great information. New to fly tying. Can you give a list of tools for newbies like me? Look forward to new videos.

Hello, I haven't been able to start tying flies yet. A house fire kind of stoped my life. I lost everything and am trying to start over. Very expencive! This is the first I have seen your video. Are there more? I would love to see a program on thread and hooks. I can read about it but, I learn more by seeing! Thank you for sharing!

Check out our channel, we have a ton of videos on there for you! I'm glad you found this one helpful.
I tried so 4 times to use the whip finisher tool and felt awkward to use, so took me a few minutes to use. Today I wanted to do a few flies and first try it felt normal and cracked it out in a few seconds. Kind of neat how it just clicked. Next i will need to try the finger version, which im sure its the original way.

Hello, there are probably 7 or 8 different scissors I use but just starting out you can get away with just one. I'd recommend the Loon 4" all purpose shop.gigharborflyshop.com/loon-outdoors-loon-ergo-all-purpose-scissors.html
Please explain to your audience what you did to get the thread back through the bobbin. Pushing thread through the bobbin tube sucks, but sucking the thread through the bobbin tube works.
