Depending on your budget will depend on the equipment you should look into at the beginning. You may be in a position where you’re stuck using your phone right at the beginning, and that’s fine. What makes you an entrepreneur is your ability to deal with the cards that you’ve been dealt. Once you start earning money from clients, you must re-invest your profits and this is the equipment I would look into. I’ve broken everything down into 3 different groups, 0-1k, 1k-2k & 4k+. In the end, you should know exactly how to start a video production company and what equipment you should buy.
It might go without saying but the more money you have, the better the equipment but you do not need to get the most expensive equipment for your video production company to be successful.

I mostly agree... even though what gear to own highly dependent on what kind of work one plans to do. I am not sure I would recommend starting with "DSLR style" camera with interchangeable lenses. I would recommend going with something basic such as Sony Z90. It covers most needed focal lengths, it has excellent autofocus and stabilization, motorized zoom, good enough low light performance, it can fit on Ronin, has XLR and SDI, supports redundant recording. One can do nearly everything with this camera and do it reliably. Rest of the equipment can be pretty much rented as needed for the particular project. But things to own are definitely basic audio, monitoring (monitor and headphones), support/stabilization and lighting.

Curious: - Why you not recommending types of kit bags? - people need to have something to carry the gear - What about Comica microphone systems? - often they have headphone output external gain controls (some are visual), and some have dual / back up recordings

Hi Louie, thank you for your comment and your feedback. We have not had the opportunity to use the Comica microphone systems but we have heard good things about them. I can look into including kit bags in our next gear review. 😊
