    The freezing one actually makes sense. The shorter flavour compounds are often the ones you smell, since they’re actively evaporating from the liquid and going into your nose. So by cooling the liquid, you can potentially preserve more of these molecules in the coffee rather than flying off.

    Volatile refers to a liquid that rapidly turns into a gas. For coffee, the volatile compounds hold a lot of flavor and give coffee that wonderful smell - but that also means that flavor leaves the coffee itself. By chilling these liquid compounds right after extraction, they're much less likely to evaporate and therefore stay in the coffee. I am a chemist, this is my only purpose

    Volatile solids exist too, for example you can smell mothballs because they are made of a volatile compound (naphthalene or para-dichlorobenzene*), and in fact if they weren’t volatile they wouldn’t work because it is the smell that deters moths (not all volatile compounds have a smell, water is somewhat volatile for example) *naphthalene is traditional but PDCB is used because of flammability concerns

    Conceptual patents go through all the time. In Canada a dude patented just the concept of having 7 coin drawers in a cash register. At the time there were only 6 denominations of coins, but a few years later the government introduced a 7th type. All the companies that produced cash register had to pay the guy millions in royalties since he already patented the idea of having 7 slots for coins.

    A "real" tea drinker doesn't use tea bags and the process of brewing tea is just as involved as with coffee, they just don't rely on machines as much. Different teas from different regions with different soils brewed at different temperatures in different ways over multiple extractions of the same leaf for different lengths of time.

  • @PhunkieZero

    @PhunkieZero

    11 ай бұрын

    @@Novacification Even not counting tea bags, drinking tea has never been, and will never be as pretentious and expensive as this espresso crap is (and I'm saying this as a half-Italian). Getting a good loose-leaf tea, an electric kettle, and a steeper-ball/infuser is all you need to enjoy your good tea. For Espresso, you need the coffee (whole beans), the coffee grinder, the machine, all the bits for it, accessories like the needle stir-y thing, the press, the filter basket, now the "frozen whiskey ball"... and I don't even have to look but I know any piece costs more than any piece of tea equipment costs.

  • @Novacification

    @Novacification

    11 ай бұрын

    @@PhunkieZero original comment wasn't about cost of the tools but just like a rudimentary tea infuser is cheap, you can get cheap espresso makers. If you do a Gong Fu style tea brewing ceremony, you have a lot of tools and utensils with you at the table and variations of almost everything, right down to color changing animal tokens to offer your tea rinsing water to. You can buy a simple kettle but you can also buy an expensive kettle that can heat water to a specific temperature within one degree and keep it there. You have many different pots depending on the experience you're going for and some tea, especially aged teas, can be very expensive.

    You can also make a good cup of coffee by pouring boiling water over your grounds in a pot and stirring for a minute or so. Not kidding, you get a really good cup of coffee that way, helps keep the grounds from burning and you don't over extract. Everyone has a couple pots they can use to do that.

    @phunkiezero My brother I'm saying this with all the love and respect in the world. You are severely underestimating the pretentiousness involved in the tea scene. While there may not be as many trending gadgets and costly machinery, the price of some of these fucking teas more than make up for that and then some. Not to mention there's tea related equipments that's are definitely ultra expensive because it's hand made by some 900th generation guy up in the moon thats never seen sunlight or whatever bullshit.
