espresso 17 Pro now 4K: CEO explains changes to Image Matrix Tech in EXCLUSIVE VIDEO

Ғылым және технология

In the video above, cofounder and CEO of espresso Displays - Will Scuderi - exclusively shows on-camera to Image Matrix Tech, how the espresso 17 Pro takes portable monitors to the next level. I've been a big fan of espresso Displays but as a professional working in the video world, the previous models did not quite meet my needs in the edit suite. But that's all changed with the espresso 17 Pro. Now with 4K, 17.3 inches, 100% DCI-P3 and 450 nits.

Hey Will, great review! You explained it perfectly. Just two questions, does the display work with Samsung Dex? Also, is it enough to carry to work in my backpack everyday? I need a big monitor for work, and I think this would be a great choice.

Although the product looks reasonably good, there are a few things that I wish would have been considered : 1. I agree that 16/10 ratio would be much, much better. 2. There should be no chin, and bezels size should be the same on all 4 sides: this is very important to make this product really feel more premium. It would be much more aesthetically pleasing. 3. It should be a bit thinner, toward 5mm to max 7.5mm (the 15-inch one is only 5.3mm, which looks really awesome) 4. The folding stand looks really awesome, but it is really disappointing that there isn’t a usb-c port at the back, and no wireless charging (Qi2) (and pogo pins for usb-c data ?) on the top part : this would be a huge aesthetic and practical advantage !!! 5. The display should also integrate WIFI 7 wireless casting (Apple Airplay 2, Chromecast, Miracast) as it would allow to wirelessly connect devices (smartphones, laptops,…). The magnetic folding stand looks really awesome but without wireless charging (Qi2 / pogo pins for USB4 data) with a USB-C port at the back, and a no chin display (equal bezel on all 4 sides), the product looks a bit too ordinary…

This looks like an amazing product. The only think I would criticize is the choise of a 16.9 display. I know that it's probably cheaper, but given the high total price, 16.10 would have been a better option, especially for portrait use. 3:2 would be ideal, but I guess that would have been way too expensive at this size...

@@nicolasdujarrier Yeah I don't really buy the argument that 16.10 would not fit in backpack, it's probably just harder to make without the chin (which, if replaced by more screen, would make it basically 16.10) or more expensive. Personally I don't think wireless charging is viable on such a device (would probably require too much power), but wireless casting (especially Miracast which is in every PC and every Samsung device) would be definite plus. As for thinner, I am perfectly fine with current thickness or even a bit more if that allows to remove the chin

@@_Digitalguy I agree that 16/10 without a chin technically likely feasible, and if it hasn’t been done, it is more likely due to higher cost or it is harder or both. And symmetrical bezels on all 4 sides is important as well to be aesthetically pleasing. Regarding wireless charging, that would be a killer advantage that would really make this product stands out, and it is technically likely feasible as well, but it increases cost and it is harder as well (some Chinese mobile phone brand offer 50W or more wireless charging on their mobile phones, and/or probably need a very low power display type (ex: tandem-stack OLED display)). Also thinner and lighter would make it more portable (I really like the 15-inch one thinness) even though 9mm is not catastrophic per se. It would become a small Apple Pro Display XDR : symmetrical bezels, landscape or portrait,… but that could be carried over…

Hello @digitalguy and @@nicolasdujarrier! This is great conversation and feedback. The team at espresso is always working on designs, concepts and innovations to enhance what offer our customers. We love what we do! Our priority with much of our product design is to develop hardware and software that can be used anywhere reliably, with almost any device, while remaining a simple and seamless ‘plug and play’ experience. Portability and durability are core foundations of our approach - using hardened glass, aerospace aluminium, and sturdy chassis, all channelled from the host devices by one cable. In terms of size and screen real estate, espresso 17 Pro has dramatically improved how we have used a similar area (when compared to our previous 15-inch device) while delivering a larger screen experience. For portability and durability, there are always trade-offs with dimensions - however, bezels are a reality for the time being 🙂 For screen dimension/ratio, we hear what you’re saying. Essentially, we want our devices to be as easy and functional to a wide range of users and scenarios at the best design and price ratio. Features like wireless connectivity would need to be linked to the user’s device as our display does not carry any battery - i.e. the wireless aspect would need to carry through to the host device. Pogo-like pins are an interesting angle, however, that simplicity of a single cable helps to keep things uncomplicated. Charge is our first product in the battery category, and it has been built to support a mobile workstation scenario. We have big plans for this aspect of our portfolio! Wireless data features would mean more power consumption and onboard chipsets (which take up more space and weight). In our experience, so far, nothing can deliver power, data, and video in one single channel like a USB-C. For stability, consistency, and no lag, we still choose USB-C. Our development cycle is constant, so we're always building our roadmap for the future. Jot by espresso is now live and a great example of where we are heading! If you’re keen to reach out to our team to discuss this further, please drop us a line: support@espres.so

Does this screen auto-rotate purely because of software and its orientation on the stand, or does it in fact auto-rotate just like a tablet due to an actual hardware accelerometer on board the display?

  • @espressodisplays

Hey, our displays use a combination of on board sensors, and software (espresso Flow) designed to work hand in hand to autorotate. Our displays are incredibly simple to use, and to maximise compatibility, we keep the on board computing as light as possible.
