    "Prior to the meeting I was told by Ippei, 'Hey, we should talk one on one in the hotel after the meeting,' so I waited until then. Up until that team meeting, I didn't know that Ippei had a gambling addiction and was in debt. Obviously, I never agreed to pay off the debt or make payments to the bookmaker...Finally, when we went back to the hotel and talked one to one, that was when I found out that he had a massive debt. And it was revealed during that meeting that Ippei admitted to using my account to send money to the bookmaker." -Ohtani It was obvious Ohtani didn't know exactly what Ippei had planned to say at the team meeting. That's the reason Ippei said he would explain the details after they return to the hotel. Some people think Ohtani must be guilty, because videos showed that he and Ippei chatted and laughed with each other in the dugout. Of course everything was normal up to that point, because the team meeting hadn't happened yet. "So Ippei obviously lied about, and didn't tell me about the media inquiry, and has been telling everyone that he's been communicating with me ... and that hasn't been true. It seems Ohtani's representatives (i.e., agent, lawyer, media reps, financial advisors, etc.) placed enormous trust in Ippei's words on face value without verifying the information because of his status as Ohtani's long time best friend and manager. The fact that any communications with Ohtani has to run through Ippei's filter means that he can manipulate what was being said. This included the ESPN interview in which Ippei claimed Ohtani agreed to pay off his debt. It was only after Ohtani contacted his lawyer (probably with the help of another interpreter) did they put out the statement Ohtani was the victim of a massive fraud. Ohtani never changed his story. He has always asserted that he did not allow Ippei to take control of his account or agreed to pay off his debt. Ohtani's representatives who knew about the ESPN interview did correct themselves after learning directly from Ohtani that Ippei's claim that he agreed to pay off his debt was a lie.

    Well, I immigrated to the US from Japan. Back then, my English was so poor that I had a bilingual friend help me open my bank accounts. Japanese banking protocols were a bit different from those in the US, so I didn’t know how to transfer money, etc. My friend helped me understand those procedures. I only have small amounts in my account and nothing really to steal, but this incident reminds me of that time.

    NO ONE including Shohei knew his close friend was a liar. People found out later that his stories didn't add up. Ippei has known Ohtani since 2013 and even he had no clue. So stop with the "known liar" bit. I'm happy that everything has been cleared up for Shohei and this ordeal didn't drag on for months. Also, I'm sad for him that one of his close friends betrayed him. That has to be weighing on him.

    There was a minor detail that was lost in translation as to the sequence of how Ohtani found out about the scandal. In Ohtani’s statement spoken in Japanese, he said that the first time he heard about the story was when Mizuhara spoke in front of the team after the first game in Korea. Because Mizuhara spoke in English, Ohtani didn’t understand everything but knew enough something was amiss. Ohtani presumably went to talk to Mizuhara right after the speech in the clubhouse and “then (その時)” Mizuhara said Ohtani let’s talk one on one back in the hotel room. However, Ireton, the new interpreter for the Dodgers at the press conference, somehow changed the word to “prior to the meeting” as if Mizuhara had given Ohtani some sort of warning before he spoke in front of the team. It’s a detail and anyone can go back to the press conference scripts and verify what I wrote here. In any case, Ohtani’s Japanese version of timeline makes more sense.

  • @naxos41

    @naxos41

    2 ай бұрын

    To explain more, the speech Mizuhara gave in front of the team was the version in which Ohtani knowingly repaid Mizuhara’s debt. Mizuhara then told Ohtani let’s talk one on one in the hotel room, where presumably Mizuhara tried to persuade Ohtani to go with the story above. Ohtani refused and called in the agent, who finally brought in lawyers. After that hotel meeting, the crisis manager, who had been duped by Mizuhara, and Ohtani’s lawyers called Tisha Thompson to stop the publication of the bogus story Mizuhara had concocted.

    The legal mind in me says that the FEDS have been investigating this for a while. I noticed in the criminal complaint the Bookmakers home was searched and his devices seized back in October 2023. I would not be at surprised if the bank transactions are actually what contributed to the investigation into the book making operation in the first place. Let's not forget as Rich noted in a different section, the bank has recording of phone calls, IP addresses, Device ID's etc. The other thing people don't know, Banks are required to notify the US Treasury (IRS) of suspicious activity.

Ohtani was the most disciplined addicted gambler ever Never once contacting the 3 bookies from his own phone Not even going on bookie websites for a look see on his own phone Not even to check odds or even see what games are up 9600 text messages on his phone with Mizuhara over a 4 year period Never once talking about the 19000 bets he made through Mizuhara over a 26 month period To me if you are going to be that thorough Why the heck would you bet through a person who is seen as your side kick that would directly lead back to you???? why would the losses from bets be paid out of Ohtani’s account but winnings from bets be transferred to Mizuhara account??? If you are that thorough… you would funnel all transactions into Mizuhara’s account Or better yet Not that hard to open up numbered account off in some tax haven country When you have money people always find you to flog their tax schemes legit or not I guess these folks who don’t have money don’t get people approaching them with these schemes
