Impatiently waiting on the next Esperanza creation.
What a Journey! Amazing!
Nothing short of amazing. Esperanza continues to be incomparable.
Listen with earbuds while sleeping. This musics actually balances your hemispheres and unblocks. Cures depression
Esperanza Spalding to me is totally amazing - she looks and sounds like an incarnation of creativity. On that stage, she seems to be the only one who constantly seems to overflow with joy.
Saw them play at the Royal Festival Hall recently, Ravi Coltrane was brilliant but then again they all were. Absolute class and Wayne Shorter's legacy will live long in the memory. ❤
👏🏾👏🏾
I will never forget the late night am conversations when I was told that Wayne Shorter was a Mystic. I think a painting of him was being done at that moment. Over the years I've evolved to say .....O what a Beautiful Elegance of a man/God.

Orbit is incredible but it has nothing to do with Orbits.
Just extraordinary...I'm speechless...
When Mr. Shorter’s album Phantom Navigator came out, I was an impressionable open book. I loved it. But I was confused as to which “box” to put it in. Despite its heavy keyboard/electronic overtones, I could somehow hear the brilliant orchestration within. I could imagine Forbidden Plan-it in particular being played by an orchestra . It was billed as a “jazz” album, yet it reminded of classical music. And there were many reviews that stated that not only was it not jazz, but that it wasn’t good music at all (using Mr. Shorter’s offerings from the 1960s as fuel for this criticism). I eventually learned that there is only one box that you can put music into ……nourishment. Does the music nourish you? If it does, then nothing else matters.
Breaks new ground -- transcendence!
This is a virtuoso band all around, Spalding is amazing and so is Carrington, I got to see her w/ w smaller combo @ SFJazz this year.
These women are amazing😊

Beautiful! Clowns possessed by the moon" to take place within Berkeley Theory.
A great concert, doubtless. Although in 2023 I expected a better sound recording.

And thank you to the Polish Cultural Ministry for making such a concert possible (no chance in hell that the American government would ever fund such an endeavor)
Perfect pitch.
That Star Wars Theme remix they open the show with is off the hook!
Apogée!
Великолепный оркестр! Для чего выделили так Эсперансу? Чем она так знаменита? Выиграла Грэмми.

Есть подозрения, что она автор музыки, и заодно продюсер, как это у нее водится.
Besides Esperanza Spalding, I can see it's Terri Lynne Carrington on drums but don't recognize the pianist or sax player. Anyone? Is that opening number 'Nefertiti'? I heard the sax player playing certain fragments of it, they must have deconstructed it big time....but I'm not sure if it was the tune deconstructed and re - assembled or just some quotes in a big WS opening Medley...

@@johnnicholas7420 thanks for the kind reply. Now I see they printed tin small letters at the booth left of the screen, I was too focused on listening to the music and watching the players to notice the title; it's a WS piece I'd never heard before and the sax player was definitely quoting motifs from his tune Nefertiti, It left me wondering. Same w/ the personnel, I usually find the info on the 'show more', I see now they printed it on the screen too, Kristin Davis and Tineke Postma.

And Esperanza goes into detal about this fact at 49:00
Yeah Terri Lynn Carrington! Yeah Esperanza! Too bad the sound isn't better.
I am a great admirer of Esperanza Spalding. But here I see the greatest musical talents the world knows (Shorter and Spalding) on a playing field where they are second division: Wayne Shorter composes ALMOST on the level of Samuel Barber, Esperanza Spalding sings ALMOST on the level of Barbra Hannigan, but this "ALMOST" is such a strong limitation that I find it hard to bear. But they are not the first to have this happen to them when they want to realise their dreams beyond their strengths (like Leonard Bernstein with his "Mass", for example).

In a way I kind of agree with you, there probably are people who compose, play, sing, arrange better than Spalding or Shorter. For the sake of argument let’s say that they are Hannigan and Barber. But there are probably people better than them, too. Who’s better or who’s best is so subjective anyway. But when you go to a concert, do you always expect the performers to be the best in the world? You must not go to many concerts! Or you’re disappointed a lot.

@rjwh67220 Great answer to an absurdly over-analytical comment. I supposed Samuel Barber played with Art Blakey in his 20s, Miles Davis in his 30s and Weather Report in his 40s … this music brings an entirely different breadth of experience than anything in the European music world - why compare?
Sophist music ... I suspect it's audience are thinking; "How intellectual am I". This sort of thing is a "conversation piece", for people who really haven't got anything of value to say. So they invest in accessories, indicating some sort of inner sophistication. The high-brow version of a Gucci bag. I think it mostly is an empty execution of good talent.

Honestly I feel that, how experimental can something get before it loses its potency. It seems the intellectualism in music these days is actually taking away its depth at times.

feel the same - it's the agonie of sophistication, kind of after postponed avantgarde, detached from the scratch, aloof proof, highfalutin scoopin', airy-fairy-scary-contemporary, skirly-girly-furly, squeaky peakin', it's the none-music, the wheel of untune, kills overkill over skills,,,,
