Just wishing I could have what I have here,the money,my children and grandkids with me in Tonga and I could just relaxed in my little island and listen to these great composers and singers! Saiasi Namusu!I am Tongan and I struggle too to understand the real meaning of the song.Its written in a deep language where the writer writes it with pretty much metaphors,similies and poetry styles.This makes the meaning hard for those that don’t have the real all around Tongan knowledge depth! This types of writings were very common in the olden days.They were regarded as one of the best song writers if you can write and hide the meaning deep in the songs.Its only other writers and composers that can peel its top layer to reveals its details meaning.Some times the song describes real sexual actions but none is open up as its hidden deep in the style.One of the songs that our Beloved late Queen,Queen Salote,Apparently when peeled back by other writers,it’s actually talking about her love life.She describes the vigina dripping down as the pond start flowing,”Hange ha tafe ha tafenga vai..”but no one would even know.So to answer your question,a lot of older composers,we just listen and keep on guessing and just enjoy the music.The younger writers are too open and some songs are not appropriate for families gathering due to the rude lyric,where as the older writers hid those meaning in their style of writing,hence their songs can be sung anywhere

Originally it was Mate'aki Ma'a Tonga which means "Live for Tonga". Now it is changed to Mate Ma'a Tonga "Die for Tonga". I think I like Mate'aki better.
