It comes from Sanremo song festival, where the song won the first prize. At Esc didn't win because there was a "combine" against the italian song, as in 1959, for "Piove". But Domenico Modugno sold 22 millions of record and Volare was the first song also in usa billboard top of 1958.

Blasphemy. For as much as i love both songs, the Fratelli d'Italia anthem is much more meaningful to our country, it reminds us of the blood our ancestors shed to unite the country, the 2 young men which wrote it were from my town(Genoa) and the one who wrote the lyrics(Goffredo Mameli) died in 1849 protecting Rome from the french troops while defending the Roman Republic, which set what in 1948(a hundred year later) become our constitution. Fratelli d'Italia is both solemn and patriottic so it's perfect

This was my very first favorite Italian song. I listened to it a lot and sang it phonetically when I was little, back when I spoke no Italian whatsoever. And now that I've been studying Italian for almost 5 years, I started appreciating the song even more; the lyrics are absolutely poetic!

As an American it’s a misty experience to realize that this is the first time the world ever heard “Volare”. Such an important song of the the 20th century. Proves that the Eurovision judges can’t evaluate talent or greatness. Was there ever another song that appeared in this contest that became a classic like this?

I'd say Abba's Waterloo became even more famous. Fortunately that one won. But in general the commitee voting system gives some tragic results. Often against Italy, e.g. see their 2015 entry Grande Amore which deservedly won the televote but in the end lost due to the commitee votes (mainly due to heavy promoting by Sweden who take the contest VERY seriously).

Waterloo as a song is nowhere nearly as popular as Volare worldwide (which was a #1 everywhere including the USA and it won two Grammys, was covered by hundreds of artists and its still one of the best selling singles of all time). It’s ABBA as a group that became a worldwide phenomenon thanks to many of their hits, Waterloo was just the start for them.

This song means so muche for Italy and italians, it had been wrote and performed in 1958 after an hard period of rebuilding of our Country after the awful experience of II world war and civil war. This song arrived at the edge of our economic miracle of our industrial blow up, and even if the real things, like war, reconstruction, pain, civil war seem to worth much than arts and feelings, they all seemed to be propedeutic to this three minutes of pure human fantasy. It seemed that all the bad things of the past have happened to let it possible the birth of these wonderful art piece!

Totally. The winner that year, "Dors Mon Amour", was sleep-inducing trash even then, but the runner-up "Giorgio" was excellent.

A great melody, a great singer and great lyrics usually make a great song. That's exactly what Eurovision can't offer anymore. Modugno's "Nel blu dipinto di blu" didn't even win the contest that year.

I have this on a playlist as a sort of intro to ESC songs. I had to start with this one as it's so good people don't realise it started out life as an ESC song. For the uneducated it won one of the first grammy awards (and it's proof how much that award has sunk in value that they didn't even nominate fellow Italian legends coming out of the ESC last year but they're in good company whose same bleepheads ignored Nirvana too). The first of a series of songs that would fail to win Eurovision but would become better known than those that did it lost to a totally forgettable French ballad, appropriately since it was pretty sophorific, called Dors Mon Amour which translates as Sleep My Love and piece of Swiss cheese called Giorgio. It was originally made famous by Dean Martin (who was of Italian descent like his famous chum Ole blue eyes himself) and more recently by The Gypsy Kings.

Dovresti saperlo... quando noi Italiani produciamo qualcosa di grandioso, le altre nazioni ci invidiano e fanno di tutto per metterci i bastoni tra le ruote.

My winner is 1958

Listening to this I feel so surprised that this song did not win when we know how much it became such a music standard later. Maybe this song was a bit ahead ot its time I think. It sounds jazzy (that was already a popular style of music then). But the jurys that were much more conservative than now underrated its art value... or they were much in a mood for ballads only => It was a ballad (cf. France, André Claveau) that won that year.

I saw someone saying in another video that probably everyone has heard this and it's the best eurovision song ever, so I came to check it out. I can pretty safely say I don't remember ever hearing this and I think it's underwhelming compared to all the praise I see it getting. I'm guessing most of the people who like this grew up hearing this a lot and I'm just too young to understand the appeal
