    Letting his dream die for humanity... Ah boy that aged poorly in 3+ hours from when I am commenting this than milk after 100 years. I still believe he made sûre it was the minimum of death required, if he wasn't commandant, then more soldiers would have died (as it was clearly shown with the previous one) for incompétence... I also think, the fact that the truth about humanity outside the walls was a personal matter to him just made him more motivated than anyone, the fact that his objectif was indeed in favour of humanity inside the walls, as only knowledge can help to cope with the titans superiority, Him having remorses at the end just proves he has morals, and the moment his own objective didn't match humanity's interests he sacrified himself too, he was melancolic about it, yes, but it was because he was very close to know the truth, we can see how ready he was to die earlier in the story...

    One of small changes I loved with the English dub of this speech was the line "because my soldiers do not buckle or yield in the face when faced with the cruelty of this world" In the original, Erwin says(relative to the sub I was watching) "that is the sole method in which we rebel against this cruel world", spoken more as if he's imparting this sentiment to his uncertain troops. The dub instead presents it as if Erwin knows that they know this, exhibiting a level of pride in them that almost gives great honor to their sacrifice. I think it makes their final run much more impactful as they rush to certain death with the full belief of their commander backing them

    I love the coldness in his voice when he answers floch questions with straight yes. He knows all the terrible things that comes with his decision and he's stern on his choice. Like he said, they didn't forget the soldiers that passed so why would the soldiers after them would, think about it, no matter how you look at it, your life will matter if you honor it. If you don't, of course everything will seem like for nothing. Erwin definitely is teaching me to have honor and be proud of my life and my decisions if it's what i believe is for the greater good. And its all because like he said before, if you want to survive in a cruel world you must become the devil sometimes to do so. Thats just how it works, we must do things we don't want to in order to grow & learn

  • @thecrimsoncrispy

    Yeh of course there are times when a devil is necessary, like leaders in times of war. But that shouldn’t be misinterpreted to further selfish actions , Erwin while having a selfish goal still did everything he did to help save humanity, eren became the devil to save his friends. Most people nowadays don’t even need that turn of phrase, don’t wanna hear people excusing selfish behaviour because of the themes of aot. They will never have the responsibility needed to use excuse using a phrase like that

    Rewriting my comment from the original video; Erwin is by far the best character in AOT by kilometers! He was able to grab his soldier's fear of death, his fear of death, and turn it into a speech to rile them into a battle they knew they couldn't win. Rest in peace to the GoAT.

  • @Guts-DemonSlayer

    @Guts-DemonSlayer

    Respectfully, I don't believe that he gave this speech so they could ride into a battle they couldn't win. Exactly the opposite.. The discussion that him and Levi had right before this speech was critical to this scene. He knew that Levi would handle the beast, just like he said he would. Erwin gave that speech so they would be willing to give their, "hearts and souls to the cause!" one more time. He knew that a head on approach was necessary; possibly the only way they could have come out on top in that situation. One, to keep the Beast occupied even for a second. Two, they needed a way to keep Levi unseen. That's where the smoke screen comes in; and the only way to do so was head on.

    The biggest thing about this is that to me this is one of the greatest speeches written. It wasn’t said by some battle commander on deaths door. It was written by a manga artist.

    You, who is fighting your battle, you are my soldier, your fight is silent, unobtrusive and only you can acheive it. Remember that my rage is yours to use, may this fight you are going through make you the strongest version of yourself. Also take care of your loved ones, when it is time for your wounds to finally heal, the hands you protected will carry you through. Stay blessed ❤

    The beautiful thing about Erwin is that he never truly cared he just wanted to prove his father right so that he could justify within himself getting his father killed and used to scouts to do so. Only when he gave up his dream is when he truly became a scout in my eyes

    Were their lives meaningless? They were not! Their memory serve as an example to us all! The courageous fallen! The anguished fallen! Their lives have meaning because we, the living, refuse to forget them! And as we ride to certain death, we trust our successors to do the same for us! Because my soldiers do not buckle or yield when faced with the cruelty of this world! My soldiers push forward! My soldiers scream out! My soldiers RAAAAAGE!
