    Hi Chris. A very clear and concise video on these errors and how to correct them. But, one error you didn’t mention which I would’ve like to see how it can be tackled is ‘balance transfer error’ - where the general ledger balance was either omitted from the trial balance or a different ledger balance was incorrectly recorded in trial balance from its original general ledger. I’d really like to see a video on how an error like this can be corrected. Thanks

  • @adapttuition

    @adapttuition

    3 жыл бұрын

    Hi! This is a great question. As I mentioned in this video series to correct errors we have to undo the wrong and do the right. So the “wrong” is the recording of the return as a credit sale. To undo this we would need to: Dr. Sales (to undo the sale) Cr. B. Fowler (to remove the dr) Then you need to record the entry that should have been made but wasn’t: Dr. A. Jack Cr. Returns Outwards Hope this helps. Also( be sure to watch this entire video series and try the examples. That will help 😊

    @@adapttuition Sir would this example be a compound error? If so, then what exactly are the errors?

  • @adapttuition

    @adapttuition

    3 жыл бұрын

    The errors are the omission of the correct entry and the recording of an incorrect entry. I suppose you could also think of it as a combo of an error of commission - we debited Fowler instead of Jack - and and error of principle - we credited returns outwards instead of sales.

    Hi! I have a whole playlist on limited liability companies (corporations) I did last year. You should find it on my channel 😊 Also, set-offs is something associated with control accounts and I have a video on that too. Just remember with set-offs: 1.) always use the lower amount 2.) it goes on the opposite side of the major balance in each account because it’s function is to reduce the balance in the account. Hope that helps.

    Hi, so the basic protocol to correct errors is:- - Undo the wrong, & - Do the right So we would have to do the following: - Credit purchases returns to UNDO the wrong entry - credit discount received to DO the right entry - DEBIT suspense account to facilitate the double entry

    Hi 😊 In your original comment in this thread you said that discount received was debited to purchases returns. The debit to purchases returns was an error and needs to be undone/cancelled. To do this we need to do the opposite of a debit which is a credit. Now, you are correct, if we credit purchases returns we would increase it. But consider that the incorrect debit would have decreased it unnecessarily. And in order to fix that we would need to increase it. Hence the credit. Hope that helps.

    What type of error is it when a sum of $800 for the purchase of goods was posted to sales account?? I I'm so confused. This effects the trial balance

  • @adapttuition

    @adapttuition

    3 жыл бұрын

    I suppose it depends on the side of the sales account to which it was posted. If it was debited to the sales account that I would say that it is an error of principle given that an expense item was entered in a revenue account. If, however, as I suspect the item was posted to the credit side then I am not sure it would simply be classified as an error of principle as that is one of the 6 (7?) types of errors that do no affect the Trial Balance. If we purchased goods (on credit or for cash) then we need to debit purchases. If instead we credited sales then 1.) we would be missing a debit to purchases (which by itself would cause the trial balance not to balance), and 2.) we have a credit to sales that SHOULD NOT BE THERE, which will also (by itself) cause the Trial Balance not to agree. When we have both of these errors in combination then the effect on the Trial Balance is doubled - the credit side exceeds the debit side OR the debit side is less than the credit side. As to what the name of this type of error is, I am honestly not sure of any actual names given to the types of errors that cause the Trial Balance not to agree. I refer to them as 1.) single entry (a debit or a credit without the corresponding opposite entry), 2.) dr not equal to cr, and 3.) arithmetic errors. I suppose this one where we have two (2) credits happening could be termed a "double credit" error but I further suppose this and the number 1 I mentioned in the previous paragraph could be related and categorized together as they both result from incorrect double-entry.

    Hi, I’m not sure how the net book value is more than the cost but when selling non-current assets the proceeds (money received for the sale of the asset) is usually credited to the disposals account. However this is assuming you have transferred the asset to the disposal account. If not you would credit the asset at cost account but for the cost of the asset, not the proceeds

It’s like starting a social media account. Everyone starts with 0 followers 😄 So we all start with near 0 knowledge about things we are learning for the first time.
