@@barbaramilone2800 I think gomer was only on for a year, and he became so popular, it's sad that they have the spin-offs that really detract from the show, too bad don knots left for contractual reasons. They should have continued to expand the community with new actors it should have been ongoing they could have even evolved from rural country to city, when Timmy grew up and went to the city, why didn't Lassie move to the city, they didn't have to do the rural Purge they could have done the shift to the city.

Even now in this day & age, I’d much rather watch the Andy Griffith Show than most if not all the junk that’s on tv today!!! Some time back after being diagnosed with a brain tumor, my had to take a new job on the other side of country & when I moved out there with him we didn’t have cable to watch. So we went to a Cracker Barrel for dinner once & wound up buying several episodes of the Andy Griffith show as well as the Beverly Hillbillies! We watch these over & over!!!

I think his appearing - and rightfully so, as the "lead character" because he was outstanding, is why he was LED OUT of the series: Andy Griffith was known to be moody (even violent at times - throwing things, acting out) and he only got along with a few people. He was also likely to be VERY jealous of the attention Howard Morris got. He didn't like to share the scene - except for with Don Knotts: his lifetime best friend, and also one of only the two people he could tolerate on the show (they weren't afraid of him): - Aneta Corsaut (his many years lover) and knotts. - But again, Griffith would frequently pitch actors from the series when he felt they took attention away from him.

My grandmother died in 2004. My grandfather was living alone, but was healthy and able to keep house after her death. BUT I was worried that he might be lonesome for her. I would go by my grandfather's house to check on him after I got off work. I wanted to make sure he was ok (he was 91 yrs old then). My grandfather would ask me to stay for awhile and keep him company. We would eat dinner & spend time watching the National news at 5:30 (Dan Rather). I would stay a little longer to help keep my grandfather's mind off my grandmother. At 6:00 we would turn channel to TVLAND. The channel would show 2 episodes of "The Andy Griffin Show" every evening from 6:00 to 7:00 PM. The first set that we watched (as I recall) had both the Darling family and Ernest T on the show. As many times as my grandfather remembered seeing that show through the years...those characters were new to him. I remember him turning to me laughing...(thank God) and he said that he didn't think anyone could be as funny as Barney Fife on the Andy Griffin show (until he saw Ernest T.) Thank you, Howard Morris, for helping my granddad through the grieving process. He lasted a whole year after my grandmother passed...and I know it was because of this show (and this character) that helped him make it!

For those that don't know, the character "Ernest P Worrel" was inspired by "Ernest T Bass" and if you don't know who that is you can look him up. Both are legends
