Erin Field: Two years of being a Quadriplegic

A poem that I wrote. Lyrics below:
It’s obvious
That becoming a quadriplegic would change your life
Your independence, your relationships, stabbing you like a knife
But yet
Isn’t it crazy- how it changes your mind set?
I used to admire Ariana Grande, Kylie Jenner, Rihanna
I used to care about the silly drama
But compared to the ones who have made me feel alone
Today I am inspired by Steph Aiello, Laura Beck, and Jordan Bone
Having the best clothes, the best car, the best house
-But today, am I able to get my fork to my mouth?
Having hand function would be nice, walking would be even better
But I choose to disregard societies “acceptance” letter and become my own trendsetter
When you wake up and pull your blanket over you at night
For me, pulling my blanket up is a never ending fight
You sit up out of bed in the morning, ready to start your day
Stretching your arms and putting your two feet on the floor
But, do people understand that I can’t even use my core?
Having dysreflexia, sweating uncontrollably
You wouldn’t think something as simple as that would take such a toll on me
Losing control of your body temperature is painful
When I’m so cold that I can’t move, that’s when I really feel disabled
Did you have a bad day because you didn’t wake up to your alarm?
Try only being able to get around by pushing a wheelchair with one good arm
For me, nerve pain is the absolute worst
I wake up with my hands burning and just pray this injury was reversed
Some people say: Grab this, pick this up, why can’t you do it YOURSELF?
It’s not so easy when you’re in pain-you begin to doubt yourself.
My mom has never left my side, all the way until year two
I know for a fact I couldn’t have done this without you.
I told my boyfriend he didn’t have to stay, thinking he would be horrified
I thank God I was so lucky that he never left my side.
This injury has left me with more than one scar
But it has truly showed me who my true friends are.
I am not trying to get sympathy, I am showing you a perspective
Be grateful for what you have and just live and let live
But if this ever changing world in which we live in makes you give in and cry
Just remember, everyone has bad days, it WILL get better- keep your head held high
You do not get to choose the events that interrupt your life
But it’s the way you handle them that counteracts your strife
Pain will change you more profoundly than good fortune or success
And suffering changes your perception of life nonetheless
In all honesty, having a spinal cord injury is extremely scary
But the scars on our backs tell stories that no books have the spine to carry
Pain is temporary but the victory lasts forever
No matter who you are, we are all humans, we are all in this together.

Dear Erin, I love your poem, your therapists, your friends, and YOU. I know how it feels to live with pain and challenges every day, but yours are greater, and YOU are braver and stronger. Your accomplishments are admirable because you do not boast about the good you are doing, helping others with spinal cord injuries. Erin, I wish you all of the good things that are coming around the corner, and good people so lucky to be able to share your path. Thank you for opening your hearts to your thousands of followers, who follow you for a good reason: because of who YOU are. Blessings, With love and kindness, Lilian, your friend who thinks you're so super-awesome!!!

My husband has Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), for over 2 years now. He cannot feed himself. He cannot scratch his own itch. He's on biPap machine and eats pureed foods and drinks thickened water and all fluids including soups. Eventually he needs to have tracheostomy and feeding tube. So I completely understand you and how you are feeling. Illnesses and or unfortunately events happened to one's life will ultimately modify one's perspective in life. We cried and we laughed together and we held hands and kissed each other. Love your videos. Keep up your great work.

ABILITIES Disabilities, never define who we are. Stuttering never defines who we are. Tourettes Syndrome does not define who we are. Autism of all spectrums and types never ever defines who we truly are. Physical motor disabilities never once posed challenges for anyone; Disabilities are only challenges if you make them challenges. In the word disabilities, you will find the word, abilities. Having disabilities does not make you any less of a loving and giving human person. Practicing positivity, optimism, and gratitude, sharing love and kindness with the people you love, and sharing a loving smile to those less fortunate in the world is the most powerful combatant against struggle and heartache.

Hi Erin, I am so so happy to see a new video from you. I know you have had health problems recently. I find you to be the most inspiring KZreadr out there. I know you probably don't want to be seen that way, but your videos are so helpful to so many people. I am going through a very hard time emotionally but seeing what you go through puts things into perspective. I know you help a lot of people, not because you are injured, but because the way you choose to go about your recovery and life. Please make lots more videos! If you are open to making one about what you feel in your body, sensation and nerve pain, that would be very interesting. xxx

Right in the feels. I was injured in Aug of 2003(C3/C4). I laid in bed for 3 moths before I could move anything at all. I was lucky enough to get most everything back with exception of my left arm, I can walk all be it with a cane though.. I no longer take anything for granted I promise you that. Make sure you celebrate even the smallest accomplishment. When I put a pillow case on a pillow I wanted to throw a party(LOL). People just don't understand. Stay strong and stay positive.

I can only imagine how you feel, I was diagnosed with severe RA at the age of 24. I have definatly had my lows but I keep a positive attitude about it. I was lucky my boyfriend did not leave me, he could have. He chose to marry me and I have been blessed. I have some very true friends and I can call at a moments notice. I am happy you have a boyfriend and family that loves and adores you! Keep your positive attitude! ❤

YOUR POEM ERIN IS HEAVEN-SENT AND EXEMPLARY. I will always find myself reading your beyond powerful and uplifting poem every morning to give me even further motivation for me to achieve my Oscar Academy Award Winning dream for my film project Superheroic (I finished my script for it six months ago) I wish there was some way I could thank you in person for how much you inspire me. The main character of my Superheroic film (which I will be submitting to the Oscars Academy of Beverly Hills once I get help producing it) in the future overcomes her mild Autism disability: Her name is Eleanor Warren. Superheroic is a story about the rising film directing career of Manhattan New York City native Mrs. Eleanor Warren, who is a 27 year old global LGBTQQIAP ally, a proud biracial Latina African American woman, a proud multiracial equality identifying woman, a global Times Up Now ambassador, a global gender equality activist, a global intersectional feminist, a global disability legal justice ambassador, a global women's rights equality activist, a global USC Annenberg Inclusion Rider Film movement ambassador, and a proud openly autistic woman and global autism disability legal justice ambassador. In the beginning of my film Superheroic, Eleanor overcomes her first ever acting audition rejection, and uses her uplifting storytelling voice and writing abilities, to receive acceptance into USC Annenberg's Cinema and Film Studies program in Beverly Hills California. Following the end of her four year doctoral film directing program at USC, Eleanor made history as the first ever openly autistic film directing student at USC to earn high academic honors and her film directing production card from SAGAFTRA and the Directors Guild of America. At her graduation address, twenty seven year old and decorated five star Admiral of the US Air Force and Phoenix Arizona native Admiral Vincent Everett delivers a motivating and empowering graduation address for Eleanor's graduating class. After Eleanor's graduation, Eleanor immigrated to Jerusalem to become an Israeli citizen, because she wanted to explore her Jewish roots all her life. Toward the end of her film, after Eleanor receives her dual Israeli American immigration status, Eleanor receives a call from Admiral Vincent Everett's Phoenix Arizona Air Force base, to hear that Admiral Everett's base had to defend his base from a major enemy opponent called "Adversity." Eleanor would eventually save Admiral Everett's life at Everett's Air Force base, and Eleanor would end up winning an Oscar Academy Award in Beverly Hills for her superheroic leadership, loving soul voice, courage, and kindhearted humanity. The major message of my film and from my main superhero woman character Eleanor is "never give up" and always embrace the beauty of who you are, which is a principle of love and inclusion The Oscars Academy has championed every day The Oscars has existed and since Dolby Theater of Beverly Hills has existed. I am planning on filming in Los Angeles, Beverly Hills, SoHo Manhattan, Phoenix Arizona, Indiana, Iowa, and central Dublin Ireland among other global film locations I am considering.

Erin, this is a great video and one that does in fact put things into perspective. I run a chapter of United Spinal here in San Diego and we have a section on our website called Helpful Videos, if it is ok with you I'd like to include this, not as the typical "inspirational" video but rather as a video that could help someone else with a similar level injury. On a side note when it showed you at the ballpark and I saw the Green Monster behind you, it brought me right back home to Fenway. Thanks for sharing.
