I have to agree. Donna was kind of a Mary Sue that everyone had to love as this perfect person of the group, while Eric got treated as the court jester to be mocked as a loser. The irony is, I recall several times where JACKIE would defend Eric to Donna indicating that he was a great guy who was devoted to her and she could do a lot worse.

I will never forgive this show for always making Eric the bad guy. This kid, LOVED this girl, he LOVED his family, and he LOVED his friends. He changed so much for all of them, he changed for Donna, Hyde, Kitty, and red because of how much he wanted to be with them, to impress them, and to be the best he could for them. And whenever he had an opinion that slightly differed from them, he was painted as, a liar, a dirtbag, and being selfish. Truly one of the biggest flaws in such good writing for a television show.

Eric was immature as hell, and this shows it. Donna was thinking like a teen ready to become an adult. Eric was thinking like a teen refusing to grow up (which is his problem the entire show). Donna was absolutely right; it was just a high school ring that didn't mean anything. Eric should've had enough love and care for her to let her make her own decision. His own selfish ideals of their relationship should not get in the way of either of their happiness. But that's what happened. Sorry, I like, super fuckin' love this show. lol

Man, they have been together for 2 years. And don’t forget that Donna was always the one who said “forever”. That ring is them being together ‘til the end. Donna refused it. The girl you love refused the ring that was the symbol of their eternal love. And she told him that he wasn’t in the dreams in the future that she wanted. And they “love each other”.

@Truth Sayer Donna was right. It's not realistic to think two high schoolers are going to be together for life. Does it happen? Do high school sweethearts marry? Yes, but more often than not people who marry too young or don't explore other relationships to find out who they're truly compatible with, end up in divorce. Acknowledging the characters in this show are fiction, if they reunited and married/became life partners, then Donna was right, they were meant to be together. But, no one can truly know that unless they explore their options and see what other things life has to offer them. Your comment reeks of the "nice guy" mentality which is actually pretty selfish. I wouldn't be surprised if you're an incel. Maybe change your name to Anti-SJW Meme Sayer.

KomamuraSajin Eric was right, commitment is a choice. You say you are going to be together and then you do it. Her parents failed to do this not because it was out of their control but was due to their foolishness. Eric wasn’t asking for marriage but simply a commitment through a promise ring. So, the marriage argument doesn’t work here. However, many marriages between young people do last a long time, but this is due to choice. Although the a lot of marriages aren’t healthy, many last a lifetime. I would also argue that a lot of older people marrying don’t do well. This would also support that it’s not so much the age but the mentality of those involved. It wasn’t unrealistic for Eric to seek a commitment, but if he had been asking for marriage it was likely too early. Eric and Donna were at a reasonable age. So, they certainly weren’t too young.

You guys trying to blame Eric are pretty selfish and you don't understand relationships. Donna was basically putting him in a lonely bin. I mean how would you like it if the one you loved told you the same things that Donna did? Of course it would hurt. If it happened to me, I'd wanna break up too. You can't blame Eric. Donna said that she was feeling lonely from her thoughts about her future. That alone just starts an argument. The best thing she could have said was that the ring was just too soon. Everything else she said was uncalled for. I couldn't handle someone saying those things to me

  • @JRCGuitarist

American Zero I disagree with you. They both handled that the wrong way. Donna acted like Eric was going to get in her way, which he clearly seemed open minded in her doing what she wanted. He just wanted to do them with her and not apart. Donna had decided she was going to do things alone. If she felt it was too fast that's one thing, but to plan a future without him was selfish in itself. Eric on his part should have handled the break up better than that. If I was in his shoes, I would have broken up with her too. But not the way he did. If we aren't going to plan a future together then I would like to see other people and decide if you are going to be in my future. In other words, if you want to plan a future where you are alone, then so will I but I won't do that committed to you. So he made the right call to break it off. He just didn't do it right.

Fala Crow, exactly. If I was in Eric's shoes, I would wanna break up too. If my girlfriend could only imagine her life without me, then what's the point of being together? Eric broke up with her because she hurt him, but he did it in a way to get back at her

  • @JRCGuitarist

    @JRCGuitarist

    7 жыл бұрын

Adam Lanza You misunderstood what Eric was saying. Eric wasn't asking her to give up to college or her dreams. He clearly said, it didn't matter here she went to college, but that they would be there to together. She was the one who said, she wanted to do it alone. I also don't I see any evidence that she had sacrificed so much for him. If that's the case, then Eric had right to want to be with her wherever she went, since he also sacrificed so much for Donna. As all people in relationships, you sacrifice to keep the other happy. Eric was offering support, not telling her to give her dreams. But she was being selfish in telling him, that she saw her future without Eric. That's not a matter of sacrifice there, if anything, Eric was expressing he was willing to sacrifice what he wanted or where he wanted to go, to follow her. Hence why she was trying to get Eric to think of his future for himself. She wanted him to consider a future where they aren't together, she's off doing her own thing, and he's doing his thing. The problem with that logic is, love is commitment. Eric was right, the way two people are together, is not by sitting there and "going with the flow". You are together because you choose to be together, you commit to each and do what needs to be done to maintain that commitment. She wanted them to keep their options open instead of trying define it or commit to it.

The painful thing about this scene is that they are both right. Donna wanted a future with freedom in it. She wanted the option to be out on her own, and believed that she wouldn't know herself unless she had the opportunity to spend time apart from the things familiar to her. Eric wanted a commitment. He didn't need to explore himself further because he already knew what he wanted out of life: to be with Donna. That's not going to work, and Eric realized it. He didn't want to be on the hook, waiting around for things that, as Donna put it, "are meant to be" to come to pass. Donna isn't wrong for returning the ring. Eric isn't wrong for breaking up with her as a result.

In my opinion...Eric was being selfish. Donna had a lot going on in her life at the time, mainly her parents fighting and breaking up, and now he comes around with a Promise Ring..She was trying to say if it's meant to be..then they'll be together..but that wasn't good enough for him. All that ring did was scare her..why? Because they are both a bunch of stupid kids still in High School..neither know what the future is gonna bring..or if they're still gonna be together when it's all over. Although Donna did lead him on thinking she's happy..she should have been upfront with him and told him this is scary and they need to slow this down..but Eric was wrong to break up with her. He acted like a spoiled child who stomps his feet whenever he doesn't get his way. It's like everything has to be his way or the highway, that's what ran her off. They could've worked things out, but he took the easy way and bailed on the relationship..at least later he realizes what a dumbass he was and worked on getting her back.

Eric failed at understanding that he was pressuring her, and yes, wasn't taking into account her own troubles that she was dealing with, like seeing her parents, the longest relationship she'd known, pretty much fall apart. young love is very passionate, much like new love, but young love has the added 'bonus' of NO Experience in dealing with these emotions and issues.

Snorlaxation Yeah you got a good point, both of them were at fault in this, Eric for trying to push her into this, not taking into account that he's practically scaring her, making her think about the future. and Donna for not being honest in her feelings when she is not ready for a long term commitment because she doesn't know what the future holds for them..compiled with the fact that her parents, two people who've been together since she was in diapers..are splitting up and there's nothing she can do to stop it. Both of them eventually realized their mistakes and soon ended up back together.

I still feel like Eric was justified in doing this. He was really supposed to be fine with her not seeing a future with him at all? It confuses me that Donna throughout everything still haven't changed. She's always going to blame Eric when she threw the first punch. She basically told him she doesn't see a future with him and that he's with her right now. How can she say these hurtful things to someone who's deeply in love with her? Eric has shown that no matter what he's always going to love Donna. If she doesn't feel the same way he's just wasting his time planning a future she doesn't want. He had to leave her or else he'll stay in a relationship where he's always wondering when she's going to leave. That isn't fair. Eric is a selfish person. He always wants everything his way too. He plans and Donna just wants to go with the flow. Even though, I believe Donna loves Eric too. She's just too emotional right now with her parents separating and her mom leaving. This was bound to happen. When you meet your soulmate at such a young age, you get together too soon and you're bound to make stupid mistakes.

candy innomin Technically they were both selfish in this case, I wouldn't say he was a selfish person tho. Clearly Eric was willing to support Donna through her career and schooling. He just wanted to do these things with her, not apart. Also, having a promise ring downs t mean they would get together too soon, Eric made a good point. The point is not that do move fast but then in the end they at least put the effort to be together. That doesn't mean they get married right away or anything. They had time to wait, Eric just wanted to know that even through that, they would be together. He had a right feel secure in this relationship.

I don't think either was selfish. They just wanted different things. You were right. He wanted to plan things out (actually not really and I'll explain in a bit) and she wanted to go with the flow. He was right to break up with her. So the promise ring was actually just meant to secure their relationship. He wanted some sense that she was always going to be with him, no matter how superficial.

"Story of my life." My ex and I hooked up in our 30's. I was 30, she was 35. Our relationship lasted from early October 2016 - Late August 2017. She had a 9 year old daughter, blah blah blah. I'm open enough to share. Well, it just never seemed to work out. I wanted love and affection. But she wasn't willing to give me that. She said no. Her daughter is her #1 priority (Nothing wrong with that). The bad thing about dating a single Mom is, if you want love and affection from her, you're gonna be competing against her child. That's never a good thing! You will always end up losing. So basically, it was a toxic relationship. Anyway, one day my ex, her mom and her daughter, came back from lunch. Suddenly, they got into a car accident. She and her daughter survived. But the poor old woman didn't make it. She died. The death of her mother became the end of our relationship. She was depressed. She didn't want to try anymore. I was always putting my best foot in and worked hard, in this relationship. She was never interested in me. I love her no matter what. But unfortunately, I was put in a difficult position. I had no choice but to break up with her. Your comment pretty much relates to mine. Not 100% but something like that. Moral of the story is, a successful relationship is based on 2 people. They give it their all, Not 1 doing all the work. Otherwise, it will soon become, "Titanic."

I don’t blame Eric one bit. I would’ve done the same thing. I believe Donna loves him but It was obvious that she was taking him for granted and was being selfish. It’s too bad because I liked Donna at the start of the series but she stayed the same the entire series and did not develop much as a character, not to mention she became increasingly annoying every season.

Donna is kind of a jerk for treating Eric that way. Eric was completely in love with her and wanted to take steps towards making it official and Donna made it seem as if they were only together by chance and tomorrow their might be another chance that they won’t. That sort of thinking is really hurtful to someone that’s in love. She made it seem as if their relationship was trivial and just some random chance and that it might not even work. I guess Eric should have given her affirmation and reassurance but he got mad in the moment and let that cause him to break up with her. Eric was dealing with a wishy washy type of female and unfortunately that type of person isn’t a stable ground for a solid relationship.

  • @jarekgunther

If you ask me, they both have valid points about the future. At least here. Personally, I'm more with Eric more cos prior to this moment, Donna treated Eric like crap and completely dominated him in the relationship. Not to say that Eric's completely innocent though. Sure, he can be a little chauvinistic and immature at times, but _DAMN._ Donna overreacts to the simplest things Eric does whether it was out of his hands or not, she never brought up to Eric why she publically announced that she doesn't have a boyfriend while on radio, which leads to Eric's distrust in the first place, she ditches Eric at the Ted Nugent concert and doesn't feel the need to apologize for it when called out on it, and she constantly tries to derail Eric's chances of moving on and dating another girl while she goes out with Casey.

To people wondering, it was normal for high school couples to consider marriage shortly after graduation in the 70s. Both of them handled that the wrong way. Donna was very selfish in her logic in that relationship. Eric was a little selfish to push but he had a right to push it a bit so that they could get it out there. He needed to know where they stood future wise. That way he doesn't waste his time. Now that he knows she was planning their future without him, he can plan his future without her. In the mean time he can date other women and possibly find someone who will see things the same way. So the break up was warranted and if I was Eric I would have dumped her too. I'm not going to do things according to a let's see where things go, that way of doing things leads to commitment issues later. Love in itself is commitment. You love them, commit to it. With that being said, I believe that Hyde was full of crap, he's my favourite character, but he was full of it. Eric didn't screw it up with one of the hottest chicks in point place. She screwed up the relationship the moment she started planning her future without him. He helped bring it an end by pushing her a bit, but rightfully broke it off. She wasn't committed, he was. I personally believe in predestination, but that doesn't mean it works without effort on both sides. They could be meant to be together, but if they don't handle things right, that can cause things to take longer than necessary and they could lose a lot of time together. I've seen this with my parents life.

I rewatched everything and it progressively gets more annoying that they always use eric as a punching bag even when he is not wrong and reasonable. They say he blew the relationship when the ring was a symbol of not only love but security and she overcomplicated it as if she were putting on the “ball and chain” referenced later on in the show. Which is a double standard because she called it a stupid highschool promise as if it really meant nothing but it was clearly given much more meaning than it deserved in her mind. A serious relationship isnt really worth having without security. Plus she always took advantage of his kindness and played him against himself using his feelings for her all the time. Pissed me off. The time eric rejected her was the most satisfying part of the show.

For everyone saying Eric was being too "pushy" that's not true. He just knew that the time was fast approaching when they all basically move on from High School and go down their paths, and his insecurity led him to make a hasty choice with the promise ring. I know how Eric feels because this same thing happened to me where I got impatient and broke up with the girl I loved who was going to go "study abroad" for a year. It sucks major ass when you see things moving apart, the tides of life seemingly separating what was once a simple relationship between 2 people who always had circumstance on their side being neighbors and going to the same schools all their lives. But then once that changes Eric brought into question whether or not their love was stronger than paths and circumstance. Donna was unsure of this, and it sucked for her too because she did love him but she didn't have the same feelings about setting the future in stone. All in all, they both got screwed at this point

I've had relationships like this and its tough. Because 1. You are at happy stage in the relationship and you don't want to things to change. 2. You are afraid that its all going to be the same and no progress, no change, just the same thing over and over again. They were both in a place where something had to happen or things would deteriorate and sadly this had to happen. They needed to know where each others places were right now or else they would have woken up one day and realised she could be someone better and he could be committing to someone who was ready. Eric had to force his hand because he found someone worth keeping and sometimes you have to, things don't just happen unless you take action. Donna had to say no because sometimes committing to something you aren't mentally prepared for isn't a good place to start something long term. You start getting doubts which is never a good thing. Sadly their relationship was never in sync after this breakup, which was evident during the final seasons. Them getting engaged, breaking up, seeing other people, Eric moving away, Donna moving on. The saddest part of their relationship is that they can never be separated, they live next to each other and always have been together. It's hard to let go something so comforting and so safe, when it demoralises you and hurts you back.

I honestly can relate to both of them with Eric more than Donna. To be in love with someone and then have them treat you like that is terrible. I can understand the nervousness that Donna felt, and I wish more than anything that she had thought through this before proceeding with it to save both of them the heartbreak of losing each other.

I think the thing he is that they are both in the wrong. Donna just wants to live in the moment. She can't control what happens in the future, and the last thing you want to do is promise your significant other things that are not assured in life. Mostly because they are young. Eric in the other has expectation way too high for them just being in high school. They should have both lived in the moment and not worry too much about the future.

Everyone that disses hard on Donna, I urge you to recall that they are in HIGH SCHOOL. They are KIDS. That’s a pretty big commitment to ask right as you’re beginning to come into yourself as a young adult. Sometimes it works sure, but she’s no villain for not wanting her future set in stone before she’s even had a chance to get out into the world. I can see that being scary for Eric but as with most things I feel it would have been better if they had sat and talked about it.

This scene is really a statement of real first young love. Eric isn't being realistic in his concerns here. They are like what 16-17 here? There really is no way to know if you are going to be with this person forever. When you are that young people and feelings can and will change. Yet I totally understand where he is coming from here. I also understand where Donna is coming from as well. Sure its nice to dream of a love that last forever but some people want to experience more in life. And sometimes those experiences are meant to be on their own. I had a similar experience with my ex in college. I was happy just being with her for as long as we could be. But eventually she wanted to experience more things in life. Things she wanted to experience without me. It still hurts to this day and this was like over 10 years ago. You move on but I don't think or know if you can ever really get over it. It just became one of those things you learn to deal with and you move on with life. What I found weird about the show was Donna was portrayed as the one who wanted to go out and experience the world. And then Eric is the one who winds up doing that. I get Topher left the show and that is just the way it had to be written since the show continued. But it kind of changes up the perspective for this scene.

Yeah. No. It's ok to observe this perspective from a future standpoint. But lets not pretend that Eric or Donna should've been mature enough, or had the foresight to see that what they had was probably just the first of many monogamies. That shid is just pretentious. Donna wasn't enlightened. She was just selfish. Let's stop pretending that females are smarter than they are. There's nothing benevolent or insightful about what Donna did to Eric. At least when Eric decided he wanted more, he had the decency to break it off and not make Donna do it, so he could look like the victim. Fokc Donna. Bech asst Donna.

The whole gang and Red antagonizing Eric for dumping her is the reason I jump around S3 in recent rewatches. I also hate how they ended up making him a vagrant, despite him being responsible. She's entitled to feeling the way she feels in not always seeing him there. A lot of it ends up being puppy love, anyways. However, Eric is within his right to be with someone who is seen as his equal, and that is willing to navigate life's challenges together.

  • @beamertoy

People saying they both aren’t wrong to do what they did aren’t exactly right. Eric was clearly willing to make compromises as long as they stay together but she showed that it wasn’t in her interest. Saying “I don’t know what I will want in the future” is not a good answer or a good mentality to have. Prioritize the people you love above your status. It’s okay to not know what kind of life you will want to lead but you should know who you want in your life.
