One reason why the Hulk v Flair thing didn't really draw was Hogan didn't want to lose to Flair. Flair said in his book they wanted to do three ppvs and Flair was happy losing two but winning one. Hogan said he wanted to win all three. That didn't work for me brother.

  • @afdcg

All of Hogan Vs Flair PPV and House shows did well. Superbrawl 9 was one of the highest selling PPV of WCW. The others also did very well. You can check the buys on websites. Hogan drew well with almost everyone. The PPV without Hogan actually did bad. Maybe Starrcade 1998 with Goldberg as the champion and not having Hogan on card was an exception. Hogan was the biggest draw WCW had. There is no doubt without Hogan WCW would never grow. The death of WCW was more of Eric overpaying many wrestlers who weren't drawing a dime. The real reason for WCW death that isn't mentioned anywhere is WWF was on top of its game in storylines. WCW hardly had anything good by late 99. It was the reverse of 96 and 97. With WWF being hot and WCW getting cold killed it at wrestlings peak.

@carlos_herrera that is not what Bischoff said. He said Macho came with 750,000 from Slim Jim so he got him for free. He did not pay him anymore. Pay closer attention or don't but I will not continue to debate this.

What he said was " Randy Savage's contract was $750,000 a year; that's what I signed him for. The slim jim sponsorship was $750,000 a year. I got Randy for free and I got a deal on Slim Jims." There's no need to debate with anyone who thinks that means that Randy Savage didn't get paid by Slim Jim for doing ads for them. Bischoff is a bit glib here, but he has talked about it length in other interviews, that he, as head of WCW, broke even on signing Savage because Slim Jim agreed to a sponsorship on WCW TV (the kind of thing I mentioned in my first comment,) once Savage came over. That deal had nothing to do with Savage's pay from Slim Jim for appearing in their ads.

It just kinda came together naturally. Hogan's gimmick was getting a bit stale in WWF. Savage wanted to compete but Vince thought he was done. So Randy left too. And they invigorated WCW. And WWF was going through a rebuild. Wanted to get younger. PLUS HUGE THING ALSO. Vince just got off on a major steroid charge. And so he was going to go the more natural, smaller guy route like Brett Hart, Shawn Michaels. The timing just worked right. And WCW became bigger than WWF. The issues for WCW wasn't when Hogan came in. It was later right before he left.

Man there are some ignoramuses in the comments. Eric never said he didn’t want savage. He had gone over this in minute detail in 83 weeks. He didn’t go looking for Randy, Randy called hulk looking to come over. Hulk asked Eric if he’d be interested and Eric said: of course. Eric made the deal and it was the easiest deal he ever made bc slim Jim sponsorship made the deal a break even for wcw and they got savage AND a mainstream sponsor. He always thought savage was a great personality and wrestler and was happy to have him. Maybe you need to stop listening to the fantasy voices in your head… you’re responding to fantasy narratives. The only people Eric saw no value in was Brutus and honky. He fired honky, and kept Brutus for hulk’s sake even though he came to despise Brutus - the final straw was seeing Brutus urinate on an airplane… acting like a disrespectful idiot child (though Brutus eventually double crossed hulk and even hulk turned away).
