I went with the Hydrow. Have a dedicated workout room, love the visualization of being on the water and motivation of coaches. Also, nice bonus of yoga, Pilates, weight training and stretching programs. Perfect for a 73 year old female just trying to stay fit.

I ordered a Hydro a few days ago and expect a delivery mid-March. It seemed like the best fit for me. There isn't a perfect rower out there. I wish I had the classes and comfort from Hydro, the data driven graphics of Ergatta, ease of storage of a Norditrack, the water sound of the Waterrower, and the credibility and legacy of the Concept 2.

Great review!! Originally I was very interested in the Hydrow...more sleek and modern but then I started seeing ads for the Ergatta and compared the two. I just ordered an Ergatta for three basic reasons. (1) The whole experience buying one of these higher end rowers comes down to the workout model and the Peloton-ish trainer model is really not for me. I really liked the idea of the rower learning from my calibration and building a workout progression based on that. (2) The sound. As you're rowing, the water sounds like wave action which can put me in a zen place. (3) If I just want to hop on, listen to the water sound, and row, the Ergatta has the scenic open rows and the Hydrow does not. While I do wish the Ergatta had the wider foot and higher hand placements, it may not be too much of an issue for me (shorty short short here at 5'1"). Also, the larger display would be nice but a 17" display is nothing to scoff at. Now I'm just anxiously waiting the 2-4 weeks for it to arrive.

Thanks for the video...helped us make a decision! We went with a water rower and the ergatta add on as it saved some $$$ but still got full experience. Absolutely love it. I really enjoy the swish sound the water rower makes as makes me feel more in the element. Main reasons for our choice were the natural wood look and the focus on data/improving our goals. Not interested in someone yelling at me on the screen.

@@danieldumas4518 I did just this. Bought the Waterrower from Amazon and the upgrade from Ergatta (bottom of their website and click "Upgrade your Waterrower") to save some money. The add-on is very easy to install. Mostly just unscrew a few screws from the Waterrower, insert a part, and tighten it back in. Then a few screws to attach the tablet part. The entirely thing folds down exactly like the standard Ergatta in case you want to put it away.

I just bought a WaterRower Club w/S4 on Amazon ($1065) and Ergatta upgrade ($589). Saved about $600 and the WaterRower will be here in like 2 days, the Ergatta upgrade will take about 3 weeks to deliver. I like the Ergatta concept because I am more interested in gamification and visual data-driven programs vs a rowing coach classroom experience. My wife has a Peloton and I couldn't get into it because I don't enjoy the "live class" format/community which is a big part of why so many people love Peloton.

There are apps for stats that give all the info one would want as well as the stat monitor that came with the rower. Taking care of the water isn't a problem a small tab of chlorine every couple of months and I've never seen any algae. There is a maximum fill line so to get more resistance just row harder. Tons of workouts on the web so one doesn't need a subscription.

You can buy a wider handle for the Ergatta, which I did. Also, the drop off on split and stroke rate could be due to the sensor becoming disengaged. There’s a video online waterrower has out there on how to “lift” it to make contact again. Simple thing to do and might be the issue. Also, the big kahuna seat helps make the catch feel better along with dropping the feet. I went with Ergatta because I live in nyc where space and noise are both an issue so Ergatta fit that bill. If those thing were not an issue I would still go for the Ergatta because I like how it holds you accountable for what you’re capable of and helps you progress vs just flailing away on the machine. Loving the Ergatta so far, but damn, it does squish the boys! -Chris

Just my 2 cents worth: I have had a Water Rower for 14 years and it has not required any maintenance (except dusting). It has not required any tablet purifiers (best to store away from direct sunlight) and please - you do not need to add/subtract water to change resistance. That is a complete & utter falsehood. Last year we bought a NordicTrack treadmill and a subscription to iFit. I have just ordered the ‘tablet arm’ from Water rower for £50 and will attach an iPad to watch the iFit rower modules. Clearly, not many people are likely to pay different subscriptions for each exercise hardware equipment. Also, watching a large screen whilst undergoing the rowing movement is not comfortable on your eyes so I’m not convinced that big is best in terms of screen size. Just my thoughts.

Thanks for this video! I'm now leaning toward the Ergatta and after chatting with one of their reps today and doing more research, I think I am ready to make my purchase. The 8-week delivery time is not great but expected, so I am going to focus on my other exercises until I get it. I like the content on the Ergatta better and will supplement it with Apple Fitness+ rowing classes. Looking at the Hydrow in person at Best Buy last weekend didn't really sell me on it. And watching people rowing will likely bore me quickly. UPDATE (12/30, 8:37 pm): After many more hours of research and user reviews, I am switching to the Hydrow - I do prefer seeing the instructors and nice scenery vs. seeing data on a screen which would probably bore me after a while and not keep me as engaged. The Ergatta is gorgeous though. I plan to keep the Hydrow in my living room and it's fine, it matches my Macbook :)

During the nearly two month (COVID) delay I watched SO many DH videos, Training Tall, & C2 videos on proper form and it was incredibly helpful once I got the Hydrow. I went with the Hydrow and I've been enjoying it so far. I like being able to sync up my strokes visually with the trainer. I like the sound and the resistance and mechanics feel good to me. The Hydrow does include a *bare* minimum interaction with its 5 min calibration row. basically you row as hard as you can at 26 s/m, and they send you an email where the avg/500 from that row becomes your "Sprint" pace, and gives you a run (+10 sec), jog (+20 sec) and walk pace (+30 sec). I got a 2:06 on my first calibration row so my paces are sprint- 2:06, run-2:16, jog-2:26, walk-2:36 Coaches will use those words to describe the effort on diff intervals, but it's all on you to make use of this and hold yourself accountable. I would rate this as just barely more than nothing lol, but since I did it I've been getting better workouts. Obviously it's miles behind the ergatta, but you can sort of do what the ergatta does in your head if you have the discipline One note is that I'm not really impressed with the chair and track on the Hydrow. The track feels like cheap plastic and the chair is on cheap plastic wheels. Sometimes the chair is louder than the resistance and it feels bumpy

Anything new or different? I love the whoosh sound of the Ergatta and it's sleek interface and beautiful interface. It's expertly done. I also love the live workout feature on the Hydrow. I’ve learned you can actually download the hydro app on your own device (iPad, etc) and follow along classes if you pay the subscription fee with any water rower you have. The only issue is that the data and auto-resistance tracking features will only be functional with an actual hydro machine. this gives me the idea of buying a “water rower” base with a tablet attachment and if ever needed, use the hydro app for instructor lead classes...just to change things up from time to time without being committed to the hydro rower.

Good review, but please talk about the subscription base of each one. I went with Ergatta because it's built on a Water Rower, so if you decide you don't want to pay for monthly subscription, you can at least still use a Water Rower just without data. Pretty sure with Hydrow if you don't pay subscription you have a non-functional piece of art. Also, I ended up just buying a Water Rower from the company (Water Rower is company name) and Ergatta allows you to just purchase the screen attachment. Saved me like $600 by getting a cheaper model and no shipping cost from a local fitness store.

Great points - I was going to comment on the subscription aspect as well, as it is an important consideration for a lot of people when looking at a piece of exercise equipment. Personally, I hate the idea of paying an ongoing fee to use something I've already purchased, but if the company continues to deliver incremental value (new workouts, features, etc.) then I can accept an ongoing cost. There is a cost difference between the two subs - $38/mo with the Hydrow vs. $29/mo (or ~$24 if you pay annually upfront) for the Ergatta. The cumulative difference becomes significant over time. One last consideration - if you start with a WaterRower base, you can buy the Ergatta add-on separately. This brings the added benefit of being able to ditch the Ergatta component down the road if desired and revert back to the (admittedly basic) data functions of the built-in S4 monitor. You may even be able to recoup some of the cost by reselling the Ergatta bundle (e.g., eBay), though not sure how much of a secondary market exists, as this is a pretty niche product. This is what I'm considering doing, as I've recently gotten a WaterRower through their rental program and am pretty underwhelmed with the S4 capabilities. If I decided to hang onto the rower long term (former Concept2 guy, so still getting used to the experience), I'll likely add the Ergatta kit down the road.

@@aaronboggs5799 I have owned a water rower for over 7 years and recently added the Ergatta and its been my favorite purchase in years! I'm a gamer so this is in my wheelhouse. One thing to note is if I cancel my subscription you can still use the tablet in open row, which is MUCH better than the S4 monitor. My Ergatta add on came in Dec and the company has upgraded multiple times. They have improved the lag Shane was referring to and also added a new "game" called Meteor that is really fun and will challenge you! The company says they will continue to improve features and add challenges...so far I haven't been disappointed.

As someone who recently bought an Ergatta and have been working through their Push programs, I think they are quite well done. For beginners, there's a couch to 1k program. It might start you out by rowing for 10 minutes at a "paddle" speed (the lowest) based on your calibration. The next day you do another 10 minutes, but this time it has you switch between "paddle" and "steady" intensity for a few 1 minute chunks. Maybe the next workout it increases time a bit. It might then give you a short race. Sometimes it even tells you that after this workout, you can rest tomorrow. By the end of the 15-day program, you feel ready to do the 1k race.

My only lament, beyond the mentioned compactness: I am now older, and it seems the “tailored” programs are overridden and assigned for my age instead of my calibration results. I have done two 2000 meter calibrations and despite splits at 1:55, the remaining assignments are absurdly easy, and are suited for someone with one working lung. There are still plenty of interesting things to do on it, but I’ve been frustrated that the training does not match with the calibration for me.

The company has been good about responding to my issues and sending me replacement parts, but there is a delay of a week or more because Ergatta has to get their parts from Waterrower who is the manufacturer of the rower. It makes me wonder what cost are in my future after my warrantee expires. More recently, Ergatta has chosen Colin Kaepernick as their company spokes person.
