Today, the Watcher attacks a movie he hated even when he first saw it in the theater. Eragon, based on the book by Christopher Paolini. Will the Watcher finally completely lose his temper?
Also, the little things at the end were drawn by me. :p

While I do pretty much agree with everything you said about the movie, most if not all, Eragon fans would agree that the books are a thousand times better. Just because something bares a resemblance to something else doesn't make it bad. Just trust me when I say it gets better the further into the series you go. For example, Murtagh has a very complex story arch throughout the series as does Arya, Roran, Nasuada (the black chick at the end of the movie) and other characters that were glanced over in the movie. Hell the movie didn't even include The Twins (deleted scenes don't count) or even Elva. (The baby he "blessed" in the book.)

BeardedDragon Dragons do not have freaking feathers. It is in the book about how she has "leathery bat like wings." I am just annoyed to hell that some CGI moron didn't even know that dragons have bat like wings.

***** Well, dragons aren't real and there have been many different depictions of dragons. Though if it says in the books that Saphira has bat-like wings then I guess I understand your critism, although I don't mind them taking liberties like these.

BeardedDragon It is true that since dragons of this nature are fictional it doesn't matter but in the entire book series it is leathery wings. Hence I do not like it. Btw dragons was just the word used to describe dinosaurs cause they didn't have the word dinosaur before it was invented. What else were they suppose to call them?

Its probably sucks to be a dragon in the Eragon universe. You cant do anything without an elf or human riding on your back, constantly invading your mind with psych speech while being dragged into battles like a glorified war horse. There treated more like mounting jockeys then all powerful mythical creatures. Not to mention there force chose someone if they ever want to get out of their eggs.

Alex Burn Only enchanted dragon eggs are bonded to riders, who they choose themselves. Wild dragons can hatch whenever they want. Also, it’s explained that society’s views of dragons stem from the Forsworn’s dragons being driven insane when their names were banished from memory by the loyal dragons.

Lol this guy is funny, but I honestly don't think he paid attention to the book when he read it. I also feel he was a bit more nitpicky about this because he didn't like it from watching his other reviews. Like "Magic takes no talent just saying magic words" I feel if he liked it he may have bothered to bring up that big magic is extremely physically draining and not just a free ride. Don't get me wrong the movie sucked, but the book was well written. In the movie I can see how they kinda rip off star-wars. Maybe a little bit of Lord of the Rings... but then again magical land, many races, big evil bag guy who uses magic. Stories like this have been around far longer then Lord of the Rings so I can't really call it ripping it off. Just my opinion though.

while I respect that you liked the book, it seems to me as though you don't take the time to understand nor respect the fact that watcherofthe2000s has his own opinion on stories. For example, what kind of reason is this to debunk his argument? sayings words takes talent, how exactly? because it is physically draining, right? While that's not a terrible thing to have, that's also not making the element of magic being present in the main lead any less cheap, because that's all it is, just a double edged sword with means of taking away the element of dramatic/plot convenience, as it can't be summoned thoughtlessly throughout the story, but that doesn't make it any less of a mindless element being used as an escape card out of a dangerous situation in which the hero shouldn't even be in. That's just one example of why I agree with WatcherofThe2000s regarding how a book can be boring, there are people who care much more deeply about how a conflict / problem is being solved, as every little event has its own message to transpire to someone. The tension completely dissolves as soon as something the likes of magic bs happens and that was true even to the times Lord of the Rings used magic, because even in there it was used not as a story element, but as an escape out of a dangerous situation, aka, a get out of jail card. Cheap as fucking hell and stupid use of the element that is magic is what that was in there too, but at the very least, Tolkien understood how cheap magic was and that's the reason you don't see more characters having it. Hell, even Gandalf who was mostly responsible for using magic didn't use it as often ever since the Balrog, because the entire magic usage on the Balrog cheapened out the situation, not to mention, the conveniently placed bridge that only existed for the sake of the Balrog to fall into an endless pit... which is another even more contrived convenient element. Still, can you imagine how boring the tension in each later scene would have been if Frodo was suddenly capable of doing magic? That's the problem with stories like Eragon. It's not that he doesn't have support to hold him together, he has too much support and he has too little to offer all by himself. He's an object in which readers project their own fantasies upon, not a character who is tried through trials upon trials. The whole aspect of dragon riding and having your own dragon is that of a childish fantasy. The only real weight magic has probably had was against Durza, because that's when it actually felt like the gimmick wasn't a cheap get out of jail card, but even that was just cheap magic fighting cheap magic at the end of the day. Nothing about it has any weight what so ever, it just trades that our main lead has less of a cheap advantage over his adversary. It is a cheap way of making your villain more effective, because it's not being smarter which makes him dangerous, it's being more powerful. Do you see now why the book can be boring to some? I don't care if you like the book despite all these obvious flaws, I can overlook countless things in other stories as well, but saying someone is wrong or unfair because they don't share the same likes you have with a story, that's not something that you should do about it. Everyone has his/her own tastes and while I do like me some things that bring an epic feeling in a story, I often think more behind what it all is supposed to symbolize / represent as a meaning to the story and the event that transpired. Any scene can be seemingly pointless and dragging, but if there is meaning towards the advantage of the story in a scene, it makes its impact that much more enjoyable to me.

toxic Itzi well I noticed slot of this point but magic is not a get out of jail free card in many cases he decides not to use magic. This is due to the fact that the amount of strength it would take to do a task is the exact Same but the time is reduced to next to nothing.

Though I didnt liked the movie... I kind of get why it came across as so bad. The books arent bad, mind you-Actually, and I know some people will hate me for saiyng this as this series seems to be loathed amongst critics, but the Inheritance series are my secound all-time favourite book series( Behind only "Children of Eden" and The Battle of Apocalypse, though these are pretty obscure. )-However, the first book has one major... Trait. Something that didnt bothered me while I was reading, but could bother many people: 90% of it is pure exposition on the world, Brom explaining to Eragon how the world works, the history of the Dragon Knights, the creatures of that world, how magic works etc. etc. Personally, I loved that book for what it was because... Well, quite frankly, the things that Brom was talking about were so intersting, I didnt cared that technically, all that was going on was a old man speaking: I was still loving it. However, having Brom just talking about the history of the Dragon Knights would really NOT have worked out so well in movie form. So, they had to cut out about 90% of the dialogues between Eragon and Brom... And, along the way... Kind of drain most of the charm the first book had and make it come across as a horribly, horribly generic dragon movie with nothing special about it. PS: As for it being a "ripoff" of Tolkien works: or Star Wars: Honestly... I find that it borrows elements from it, yes, but it kind of does its own thing with it. In fact, if anything, I find it is -More-Original then most other works of its genre these days: A lot of books just take Tolkien elven lore with elves, orcs, and dwarves and imitate it. Eragon... Well, it gets clearer as the books proceed, but let us say: So, did you thought the Urgals were just stand-offs for the Orcs as the local race of brutal savages? ... Well, think again, because in the secound book, it is revealed that the Urgals we seen were just being controlled by Durza, and that the Urgals theirselves have their own culture as savage, but honorable, warriors, who usually leave humans alone if they are left alone. Not something most people do when writing "orcs"( Or stand-offs for orcs ), is it? And, as for the referrences to "The Force": Errrr... How in the hell is magic in the Eragon universe at all like the Force from the Star Wars universe? Magic in the Eragon universe is about using the power of the words of the ancient language, combined with the power of your will and your lifeforce, to alter the physical world around you. The Force seems like a more-or-less psychic ability. You would have had more of a point saiyng he ripped off Harry Potter of all things: Hey, Harry Potter had their wizards speaking to use magic, didnt it? If you are going to accuse Paolini of being a hack, could you at least accuse him of ripping off something that resembles his work? And the books clearly explain that the requirement to use magic is NOT to just know elvish words: By the fourth book, it is stated some people are born with magic, and some... Arent, and if someone-Isnt-Born with magic, it cannot be learned by normal means. Even on the first book, it is stated that using magic is a combination of knowing the elvish words AND having a sufficient imagination and concentration ability to achieve the result that you desire. ... I will give you, however... I... Kind of saw that Brom was a dragon rider from a mile away. And the glass grave thing for Brom: It was technically explained in the books, but not very well: Apparently, dragons have magic, but it is unstable and uncontrollable, with even they not always being able to choose when they use it. So, basically, the explanation is "magic". ... Considering that this is a book where magic plays a major role in the worldbuild, whether that explanation is decent, or amazingly lazy, depends on who you ask.

Okay, as a writer/literature critic, can I just say that I LOVED your rant on the Eragon book? I mean, yeah, I read the book (mostly because my eyes were attracted by the shade of blue that the publishers used) and although its a good time waster, there were SO many other YA novels that deserved film adaptations that year. Although... with how boring this movie came out, maybe its better that Eragon got it.

Regarding the magic system, knowing the words in the Ancient Language isn’t all that’s needed. Each spell requires energy and casting a spell that requires too much energy can kill you. Also, the Ancient Language can be used in creative ways to cast complex spells with few words, so it’s not just a matter of vocabulary.

The only problem with the movie, is like trying to adapt any book into a movie, you have to cram months of plots into 90 minutes of plot, and you tend to lose the sense of time for anything to naturally develop.

Time Squid ...because they didn't have the screening time to get it right. For example, Brom dies in the book outside Dras-Leona, when Eragon meet Murtagh and travel to Gil'ead to rescue Arya, but that requires a huge side story they didn't have time for, so Brom dies in Gil'ead to Durza, and Murtagh meets them in the prison. They also didn't have time for the months of growth of Saphira, so they did that quick growth crap (which really should've just been a "6 months later" transition), but thats why things aren't accurate.

Goabnb94 Damn straight. Just one Lord of the Rings movie is nearly 3 hours long. Then there's Director's Cut, Extended Cut, Ultimate Expanded Version. Everything. They still had to simplify the story and it hurts, but it's not horrible piece of garbage. Say what you want about Twilight, they did their best to stay faithful to source material. Hobbit? They actually extended 1 book to 3 films with all deleted content from Tolkien's notes. Lately movies from Marvel are at least 2 hours long. DC movies are 2 hours long. Harry Potter - 2,5 hours per movie. Hungergames, Forrest Gump, Godfather. Eragon is basically a guidebook on how not to film a book.

I agree. I mean they cut way too much stuff out. For god's sake they cut out an entire race (dwarves) and the the Star Rose which become major plot points in the later books. They cut and changed so much they wrote themselves into a corner and couldn't leave it open for a sequel which is probably a good thing now that I think about it. I understand they can't include everything some things need to be changed for the sake of time (Saphira's growth spurt), but it defeats the purpose of adapting a book to a film if you're just going to change things around because it makes it easier or more cost effective to film.

I think it all depends on what realm of fantasy we enjoy. Some of us when playing games like DnD or a fantasy video game, enjoy playing as elves. I feel those are the people who would enjoy the 2nd book more than the others. Some of us enjoy dwarves more, and so the 3rd would have been the favorite for those. I found the first and second book quite entertaining due to Eragon having to learn all of these new things. I'm a real sucker for anything that has an extended training sequence instead of a montage. I'm reading through the 3rd book right now, and in my opinion it's there that the descriptions become boring and tedious, and not for any fault of the writer's, but because I simply find dwarves and their typical culture in every fantasy realm to be a bit boring, especially when a good chunk of that book is dealing with nothing but politics. That being said, I found the details in every book were well written. He painted a picture in your mind instead of forcing you to create one yourself. He didn't focus on minute details, but still focused on enough of the bigger things to give you a pretty spot on idea of what he had in mind as he was writing. The lore and history are extremely complex as are the rules towards using magic, and you really don't understand it until Eragon understands it, allowing you to not only watch your protagonist grow, but to grow with him.

Also, the movie, from the way it is described, has completely re-written the plot. We don't find out Eragon if Morzan's son until book 2, Arya was poisned before Eragon rescued her, Murtagh helped rescue Arya, Brom died for the Ra'zac, and with his last dying breath, Eragon found out that he was a rider. Eragon buried Brom in a sandstone tomb, then Sapharia fillied it with glass. Seriously, they completely re-write the plot.

While admittedly this takes from star wars and lord of the rings, I thought it rather good. The equals were a lot more original. The movie however had no perspective on time nor did it note that the urgals or however that is spelled are monsters. The conditions for magic are logical and the movie fails to show how Eragon learned magic under the impression he was swearing. I am one of those superfans of dragons. The movie makers tore the book apart like my cat does toilet paper.

Did you ever wonder that maybe the source material of the books just... wasn't that great? My friend tried to get me into reading this book for ages, he's in his late teens and I'm 31 (yes its a weird age gap we're world of warcraft players don't ask). Anyway he bugged me to read it, until I brought a copy on sale.. and I just couldn't get though half of it. The fantasy element was okay, but it really felt like something of a younger audience target. Didn't appeal to at all.

I read Eragon my Freshmen year and that's what got me into reading. I loved the series (and yes IMO it gets WAY better in the next books) and when I watched the movie with my friend I almost cried and went on a rage 0_0 I HATED the movie! it gave the series no justice.

I loved Eragon so much. I have read then entire series and have read all four books. when Eragon was first announced to be in theatres I was extremely excited to see it so my family to see it. and I was pissed, one of the worst Book to Movie transitions. they removed and changed so much from the source material that nothing made sense. they cut out Eragon raising Saphira and his training with Brom which are vital to the story. the only thing positive about this movie is the cast. great cast.

Understandable considering he wrote the first book when he was like 16 or 18. As a fan of the series the books get a lot better later in the series.

Some thoughts, if you would care to hear them. I liked Eragon (the book). Admittedly, though, it requires some patience. If you didn't like Eragon, then you certainly would not enjoy Eldest, Brisingr, or Inheritance. Mr. Paolini seems to have lost his love for his work in Eldest and Brisingr (the latter being a giant clusterf**k of political bs). Inheritance was more like the first book, but a little choppy, I'm sure because there was pressure from Knopf to shorten the book as they had already gone over the original three book allotment. However, I agree with your review. The movie F**KING BLEW HARD CHUNKS. My daughter loved this movie. Luckily, my daughter is not quite two. This movie disappeared when we got cable. With any luck, it will not be remembered. I also did want to add that I felt that, while the books definitely rip off of Star Wars and LOTR (yay for finishing a book when you are 15 and have no real life experiences), the movies did it moreso. There's my two cents. Do with them what you will.

If I may represent my slight disagreement with the creator of this video, in the least aggressive way I can manage, I enjoyed the books. I felt as though the books created a rather believable world, which as it continued on became rather full and complete feeling, until the end of the series... Anyhow, I hated the movie, and I agree with the idea that Paolini did take a long time describing something that was far too simple to warrant that amount of time. Cheers Watcher, I like yo vids.

then you are wrong i think.I loved inheritance more than any others. It had all the right battles, all the right characters doing all the right things and the finale in Uru Baen, nest chapter I've ever read. In my opinion Brisingr was the worst (not that any are bad) because apart from the Eldunari there were no surprises or really major battles and no exiting characters introduced.

I agree with you. The books are good and do get better with the series but the movie was a real disappointment. The only character I was happy with was Saphira but there were still various bits with her that didn't fit right with her character. There's so much more to the story that they don't show and not just because of time constraints. Various crucial points that extend into the other books were massacred, hence why there isn't a second movie. Besides the fact this failed dramatically.
