Era of Nawaz Sharif in Urdu/Hindi | First Term |
Nawaz Sharif is the three times Prime Minister of Pakistan. He was initially promoted by the military establishment. His father was the industrialist and owned the Ittefaq group and Sharif Group. Sharif family is the one of the wealthiest families of Pakistan. He studied in Government College University (GCU) and University of Punjab. In 1981 he became the finance minister. In 1985 he became the Chief Minister of Punjab province. During 1988 elections he contested from Islami Jamhori Etihad (IJI) but his party failed to win the elections. The opposition party Pakistan People Party (PPP) won the elections and he became Chief Minister of Punjab. During the 1997 elections, he was again selected as the country’s prime minister. During a coup in 1999, his government was dismissed by the army chief Pervez Musharraf. During 2013 general elections he again became the prime minister for the third time. In 2018 supreme court of Pakistan disqualified him to keep any public office.
During his first term as the prime minister, he brought the number of policies and reforms to improve the nation’s economic condition. His economic policies were based on western capitalist ideas and conservatism. He tried to bring fiscal conservatism, supply-side economics, bio conservatism, and religious conservatism. He also introduced a Shariat Law to bring Islamic laws into the country. During his time there was the Iran-Iraq war. And Iraq was also making the invasion of Kuwait. He tried to raise the Kashmir Issue. At the domestic level, the MQM and PPP criticized Sharif for neglecting the Sindh and Karachi and focusing only on Punjab and Lahore. He also ordered an operation in Sindh named “Operation Clean-Up”. According to him, Unemployment can only be removed by Privatization and deregulation. Sharif ended the Nationalization policies of the 1970s and started to deregulate them. PIA and WAPDA were privatized. During his first tenure, the economic growth of Pakistan was almost 6%. To the Nuclear issue, he used the policy of deliberate nuclear ambiguity. He also wanted to curtail the powers of the president of dissolving the national assembly. This started a constitutional crisis that ended in the dismissal of Sharif. During the 1993 elections, PML(N) lost its majority and PPP won the elections. Nawaz Sharif became the opposition leader and Benazir Bhutto as the prime minister. Latter when elections were held in 1996, he again became the prime minister of Pakistan.
