There is a reason Minelab set the default Recovery speed at 6 in Park2. Sure you can lower it and get more depth, but you are giving up hearing some targets if you go real low on the recovery speed in thicker trash. Some folks think 5 is a good trade off sweet spot. I might add new galvanized nails are not a good representative of masking objects. Try using some rusty nails or bent rusty nails. Also no detector is going to pick up that quarter between those two massive cannonball fragments. That was a waste of time for showing what adjusting recovery speed will do for you. Again Minelab is obviously not stupid and set the Recovery speed and Iron Bias in each program where they did for a reason. I'm stating the obvious here, but if you have very little iron or non-ferrous trash lower the recovery speed to gain more depth. If trash is thick raise it up some. The chances of detecting deep targets in thick trash is pretty slim anyway.

You have some of the best instructional videos on settings that i've seen. Not only are you explaining the settings but you are giving excellent tests to show what you are explaining. It seems that if you use a low recovery speed and slow down your swing speed a bit, you could do well in depth and separation. I myself just dont see the usefulness of a max recovery speed for everyday hunting but I am new to the nox and still have a lot to learn.

Picked up a 600 this year for my wife to knock around with. That 1730 cob in my hand was a Nox 800 find in a really trashy colonial site. Many other equally impressive finds there too.

Nice video as always Steve.. I am reviewing some older ones to help me with settings. I think this is one in particular may not be quite accurate though, as the detector may not pick it up the same 6 or 8 inches over it and in the ground, like it picks it up hovering an inch over it. Might you want to revisit this topic with some distance under the coil ?? I think results may be quite different and it would be nice to see.

Greetings from the UK! Another great video. Over here, it seems common knowledge that iron bias has an effect on depth too. It seems a fine balance to get the iron bias and recovery speed set to achieve good depth and reduce falsing from iron. Thoughts run between a 3 x 3 or 4 x 4 setup in relation to iron bias and recovery. Any chance of a video experimenting with this?....I'm still waiting for delivery! Gaz.

Great testing , Steve. WIll you be able to pick out a silver dime on a sheet of steel? The reason I ask is because I found a place on a river bank that was an old dump where hundreds of automobiles were dumped 100 years ago. The base ground is clay, with crumbled pieces of steel mixed with dirt on top. With a bucket on the waters edge I washed the bank . I found a lot of cool stuff, four silver dimes (one 1887 Seated Liberty Dime) , old padlocks, skeleton keys, all without a metal detector. I plan to go there this summer again with a metal detector. Or is that soil too mineralized?

  • @The1ns1ght

Took an equinox 800 to the last DIV. We were a few miles from Warrenton. The ground was hot but maybe not as hot as some of the sites closer to culpepper. What we learned is that low recovery speeds are bad at penetrating the hot dirt. So that's something to think about if you get yourself in an area with hot ground. Play with the recovery speed and see what works best for you. A low iron bias is probably a good idea too.

They are air tests and its best to not just carry on till you get a slight blip. Those are easy to miss in ground . As for in ground you have to find the point in air test that the machine has a clear two way signal before breaking up . Then you have the in ground depth . Ground conditions apply too.

Gigmaster, Another well done video. I'm curious about your slowing the recovery speed down to get more depth at your heavily hunted sites. Given the Equinox's "unmasking" ability due to the faster recovery speed, wouldn't there be merit in hunting with a higher setting to see what targets were previously masked by iron targets? I'm thinking that you may find shallower targets that the Equinox will see that other machines missed. Bill

NB Digger - I like to look at the extremes and know there is a good medium in between for each persons personal preference. I may actually use the 1 in an area i want max depth and 8 in an extremely iron contaminated area with shallow targets. It will really depend on the situation but at least i know what the settings produce in the extremes.

  • @-jjj6057

It also depends on what direction you are going, the 2 irons beside the quarter had you been swinging another way it Probley would have hit on the quarter and yeah it has faster process but swing speed still plays a factor in it all. I dont much care for air tests if it would have been in ground it would have made a difference I do believe, them 2 iron targets towered over quarter, had you been going long ways down the board it would have hit quarter enough to make you investigate just my opinion on it not criticizing video at all, again just my opinion. Thanks and HH

Leutschuk I agree but there are infinite types of ground also so if i test in sandy soil and you go to clay it would be irrelevant. Air does test the intensity of the coil when doing comparisons and is a good indication when comparing detectors.

@@Gigmaster You did set the respond down then you have to swing slow like if you did detekt with a CTX 3030 it go dam deep and you swing slow

If I ever go metal detecting on boards or in thin air this video would have a point BUT seeing how I detect for stuff in the ground this video is pointless as hell.
