Hi Lilliana Coffman, thanks for your question! In general, it’s recommended that all horses get an annual physical exam and that older horses get two physical exams per year. Because these are general guidelines, it’s always best to reach out to your vet directly to determine how often they should be seen and evaluated, as they will know your horse’s needs and lifestyle the best! -SmartPaker Jenna

The one I had done recently which included some x-rays, was about $500. But it can be more than that with in-depth x-rays and stuff

Hi Hannah Canady! Great question. We wish we could give you a more exact answer, but the cost of a PPE can range from a couple hundred dollars to a couple thousand depending on a wide variety of factors. The price depends on the purchase price of the horse, the intended use, which veterinarian you use, the part of the country you live in, your personal preference regarding how detailed you'd like the exam to be, and a whole variety of other factors. If you're thinking about purchasing a horse, we'd recommend touching base with your veterinarian to determine a more precise number for your individual situation. Hope this helps! - SmartPaker Carolyn

Am I allowed to ask for past vet records before paying for the prepurchase exam; just to get a rough idea of the health of the horse so I don't get scammed by a potential ill-meaning seller?

YES! A good seller will have disclosed his medical history so shouldn't mind sharing records
