Equine Obstacle Training, are you SAFE?

Oliver is a young Clydesdale stallion that is just barely started in harness. In this video we build an obstacle course for him to go through with his fore cart. We want to make sure Oliver has as much desensitizing experience in his training as he can get, as we believe this makes a horse much safer over time. An obstacle course is a great way to accomplish this.

Oliver is a two year old Clydesdale stallion that we rescued earlier this year with the help of our viewers. He was very sick when we first got him and REALLY Underweight. He has come a long way and made a full recovery from EPM. He is now well and strong enough to start training to pull and eventually ride (Of course with the ok from our vet and chiropractor). Oliver has had quite the journey! Make sure to watch his other videos to catch up on everything! This is where his story begins • Oliver's Auction - Fir...

The main thing is, he remained calm throughout...we love you Oliver...💜🐴
Wasn't Oliver smart, adding in that gate obstacle on the first run!😂 Given that the obstacle course was brand new to both of them, i thought JR and Oliver both did really well. Half the fun of this channel is watching everyone learn! Oliver's not the only young man who's growing up before our eyes! Isaac is doing a great job helping with the videos! Thanks for the tour of the obstacles, Isaac, and for giving them such fun names. Well done!👍👍👍
I drove competitively for over 10 years . A couple of safety things I think you should do with Oliver. Side check on his bridle to keep his head a little straighter. I am concerned he can catch the bridle on the shaft tips. He could pull the whole bridle off. I have seen that happen. Also learn how to hold lines (reins) in left hand with a bridge with right hand. That way you can use a driving whip in right hand for safety. You always need a whip for directing him. Touching him on his sides like where your leg would be. Hope that helps! Love your channel….I showed pleasure walking horses for 20 years💕

My grandfather showed horse absolutely HUHE Clysdales ribbons and trophies all around his rooms I would help and I rode and trained them. I am only 5' 1 " inches so I am like an ant but those big horses listened to me better then Papa lol!😊
That was good for a first attempt. As for the armchair experts Oliver is a baby and JRs a Novice 👍 Keep moving forward We learn from mistakes Stay Safe 😎
Oliver did so well, even tho a lot was being asked of him. He is going to be amazing at this in a few years.
Well, as far as I can see, I think Oliver did a good job... Nice course
That's a phenomenal horse with a great personality. He's done so well since he left Texas. Without such good caretakers, he wouldn't be alive. Well done.
OLIVER IS A ROCK STAR . YES , I AM YELLING !! 🤠
I'm a 65 year old Canadian girl who always wanted to grow up on a horse farm and well I was wondering if you would like to adopt me. You're truly an amazing wholesome family and I wish you nothing but happiness. ❤😊

Yea@ Me too! I"m 65 but willing to work. I wonder if my family would wonder where I got to. Lol.
I was at a fair once that had a a working team obstacle course. They built a small wooden walkway with rails to imitate a bridge. You'd be surprised how many teams balked at that. They all finally went over it, but lossed points. Paredes training, have balloons and shiny ribbon banners flapping in the breeze. Then add loud music and eventually gunshots. (I wouldn't do that hitched to a cart until he's used to it.) Oliver didn't do badly for a first time. He was a lot quieter than I thought he would be, especially at the hanging tarp.
Oliver's personality is just amazing. He wants to please you and he is so amazingly calm...as long as flour isn't involved! 😂
Oliver stayed calm the whole time - he could have taken off through that gate and headed for the hills but he didn’t - he’s such a good boy🐴❤️
The tarp and the ladder falling scared him so it is a good thing your making him going through it again.
Oliver did a fantastic job ❤😊
❤ that Boy. Sweet Boy. I wish him the Best life❤
oh yes, Isaac was great !! Thank you Isaac 👍 🧑🏻🐴
That was very interesting!! Ty !!
Isaac really did a great job explaining that Obstacle Course of Potential Deaths!
I like the way you show the very beginning of Oliver's learning. Fantastic!
Better every time. Oliver is amazing.
Oh my gosh your son has Grown! And his voice has changed. He has become a young man ❤
Wow!! Impressed with you both!
This made me giggle a few times. He's so willing to try without freaking out. He might balk but he doesn't bolt and I love that about him.
You are doing a good job on it
Takes a heck of a lot of trust for a horse to walk through something they can't see through like that tarp. I think that drill right there will help him be damn near un-spookable, if there is such a word, lol. Great job!

Now on the tarp, and this is just me (dog trainer ) I would have gotten off the cart after whoring him, and walked him through the tarp the first time, after giving him plenty of time to check it out. You are REALLY LUCKY he didn't spook, after the ladders fell over behind him. That could really have set back your training. It is OKAY to break things down into smaller parts. You want to avoid failure or building in. fears or set backs.
You did a good job with Oliver Jr., and you need to get a wagon to pull
Good boy Oliver!! He is just a baby--this was a lot for one session!!! For next time, try having someone write SLOW out in flour. He is likely to encounter such a thing on the roads😮😮😮
Epic thumbnail!!!
I've never been a horse person but Oliver is one cool horse, he'll be one of those that would take you home in the cart while you have a snooze. 👊
Come on, Oliver, you can do it Jr
Oliver did amazing in the obstacle course for a first time. He didn't rear up and he didn't take off running like a banshee. He just needed to sniff things and check things out, which is very normal for a horse. All in all...Oliver stayed pretty calm during his lack-of-confidence moments. Maybe bolting a plank over the two old style tractor seats to sit on for center sitting may do the trick while Oliver is learning.
I love watching Oliver learn new things. What happened to your beard??? You look good!
So good boy. Oliver.
That's so funny because just yesterday I was looking into how hard it would be to make a trail obstacle course.
Keeping it real! Please continue to do so, it's what keeps it interesting. I really enjoy you sharing your thought process. Oliver did great...he's making such great progress and looks so healthy and happy. Love all you are doing with all your horses.
Hey Oliver ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
😮 a very frightening ring of flour. This is why you are doing this exercise ❤ something that touches his legs is also needed.

I was going to SUGGEST that you make a circle out of tall cones or traffic cones; something he can see, as he approaches the obstacle and in a different color and material. You might make an effort to see if you can find some rocks to paint white, to see if it is the color and just try to circle the outline of the circle, to begin with. Even people can be used. Once he gets BETTER. Does anyone know what colors horses can see? I know dogs only see a few colors.
He did great!!!!! Mistakes are realness and thats why we watch you and WorkingHorseswithJim!!!!!❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Literally the Cartman effect Oliver says I don’t like the blue tarp so I’m not gonna do it.😂
I did enjoy that, bless him, he’s trying, with your encouragement he will get there, he has done so well since you saved him. I’m glad Oliver has an loving and caring family, and a best bud called JR. 💕💕💕💕👍👍👍👍👍❤️❤️❤️
I predicted what was gonna happen at the end! Personally, I would've walked him thru everything without the cart first! Better luck next time. 🤠

@@bonsaidouglas9180 I'm talking about training a young horse. I've always wanted them to learn things as easy as possible at first, then worked on getting better in time. From experience, once an accident happens, it's a lot harder to work through their fears when they are so young. It's just setting up your horse for the best future IMO. 🤠

@@Gumby-Pokey Nobody forsees everything though. Afterall JR is the one who alway says you need to set them up for success, and make the right thing the easiest answer. If you were being filmed as much as he is, your little mistakes would also be very prominent to us all. So he doesn't need your nitpicking. It's all a learning experience for everyone. ✌🏼
I'm so happy to see you wonderful people inching closer to 100,000! I saw yesterday a guy who got to 2 million in just 2 years, but his channel is not even great. There is NO accounting for the tastes of the KZread viewers, many who are not very bright! It seems the more shallow the channel and it's message the faster it grows. That's America and Canada for you. Even nearly all of the channels of people who are international stars in the horse world have not grown any faster than yours has, so I get great satisfaction seeing how you've grown, and gained really good people who really care about you and your animals. You always really make my day! So I'm glad you don't take the trolls too much to heart. Lots of love to you all from Canada! Shockingly we have still not got any snow or cold weather here in Edmonton! We can't believe it ! ! ! ❤🐴🐎🐴❤

Are u talking about urban ranch? W "big ounce" lol same that 2 mill subscribers since he got big ounce. Big ounce just died but the guy that does the channel is an absolute douche IMO. I can't even handle watching the videos because hes so cringe. And literally all of his video titles are clickbait. Thats his gimmick. Douche behavior w click bait titles. It's worked for him but really speaks to the mentality of his demographic/viewers. This is just my opinion 🤷
I love Isaacs imagination. Sure he's going to do something creative and amazing in his life!
Oliver ❤ And I so love the fact that you do understand that it is a mutual learning process.
Well done Oliver, he did so well, loved the names given to obstacles! Go Oliver! 😊❤️
Thank you for keeping it real.
Awe Oliver did good and stays calm. Thanks for sharing. ❤❤❤❤❤
Great going . When you flicked him with the left rein he flicked his tail right back at you. 🤠 That was funny -- almost like he said " Give me a minute" willya 🤠 Kinda cold for shaving isn't it ?
@LightoftheMoon

Hehe, that's what I thought, too! Sloshed my coffee a bit on that Oliver tail flick 😊
At one point it's like Oliver's telling himself okay maybe if I run I can get through this thing and it ain't going to bug me and then you made him stop right in front of the trap again 😂
Traffic cones with tennis balls on top of them is what is normally used for carriage driving courses. Look into horse agility for fun stuff rather than a tarp think of fly curtains it does not look like a solid wall what Oliver thought you were asking him to do is walk through a wall, I also found police horse training was a good idea. If you get good at the obstacle course would be a good demo at a show. For first timers you both did good
Oliver is a rock star! For a young horse he did great on these unknown things he's got a good head and he trusts you
you are a true trainer. .you always see your mistakes so proud
He remained calm the entire course. His mind couldn't figure out what to do. But he was still good about it.
Oliver is such a sweetheart. He'll get there!
Thank you, that was really interesting to watch him grow in confidence. ❤️
Great job Oliver and JR! Totally like keeping it real ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
This was great and a pleasure to watch. As time went on I could see you chasing those porcupines out of the balloon factory! 😂
I LOVE how Oliver thinks! He didn't just plow ahead when something looked dangerous. What a good boy! 🥰

Especially over the mattress, it was almost like he KNEW or suspected it could upset the cart, if he hit it wrong.
One obstacle in competitive driving is 2 poles laid down just far enough apart to fit one of the cart tires between..goal is to control as you drive through & line your wheel up to go between.. & you can practice it at a walk & trot. Another is poles set up at a 45 degree angle . Poles are far enough apart to drive whole cart thru...you drive in and stop then horse has to make turn & push shaft to turn cart around the 45 turn & then walk out the other side..hope that made sense.
Wow, that is one awesome horse!!! He did great, worked through is fear instead of freaking out.
🤣🤣🤣 more trouble than a porcupine in a balloon factory 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

I think he did great! ALSO JR! Oliver is not the first horse who hates the flour circles! I saw another training video of a riding horse, no cart. That mare absolutely freaked out over flour circles on the ground too. And she wasn't a young horse either! I forget what they were working on but she went ballistic over those same flour circles! Wish I could recall more about it.

Oliver in a Christmas Parade!!!.... he'll be the most famous horse 🐎 in the Parade!!
Greatful, thank you for sharing. Oliver's winter coat is beautiful. Great job everyone 🩵✌️
He's such a good boy. You can just tell he's trying as hard as he can, even when he's scared. 😊🥰
I wonder if a driving whip to tap his side with on your away and come by commands would help Oliver to understand more easily what you are asking him to do. What do you think.? I think Oliver did amazing for a first time!
That was very interesting, a little bit scary now and then too. But Oliver and you did great. And yes Issac looks like maybe he had a growth spurt recently. Issac you did a great job walking us thru the course. And Bekah did great backing Oliver up and getting him unstuck from the fence post. And as always Emeri is a wonderful videographer. The whole family just shines at whatever they do!😂😂😂😂❤❤❤❤❤
He did well! His feathering is so pretty.
I very much enjoyed this obstacle training video !! Thank you for keeping it real so we can see the true progress of how a horse learns. I learn something Every Time I watch Homestead Horsemanship 🎉. Loved: 🐴 { But there’s flour on the ground, JR!! 😂☺️👍 Also … as a fellow horse owner.. i am very very impressed with JR’s Patience!!! 🙂 applause 👏
Awesome! And I’d like to point out how beautiful, clear, and healthy Oliver’s eyes looked today. Just luminous! A testament to his wonderful treatment over the past year. Those eyes are a window into the soul. This was just a thought I had while watching.
Thank you for keeping it real. I admire your honesty. Oliver is a very smart, willing young horse. One day he will be a great carriage horse for you.
Oliver did a pretty good job considering this was his first try on an obstacle course, especially when he had to summon up his courage to walk under the blue tarp that was moving slightly in the breeze. He also trusted you and followed your instructions. You and Oliver make a very good team.
Careful pushing to fast, I saw my friends horse lose it with a cart behind him. The person in the cart bailed. He ran through a fence, was terrified and never pulled a cart again. “Experienced cart trainers” wrecked him. So sad. So nice to see how much Oliver trusts you.
Yeah Oliver couldn't understand the tarp because it was just too low. But he did an EXCELLENT job not getting too freaked out. He did amazingly man. Absolutely amazing. Im super impressed even tho he was spooked even his little bit of stress was minimal. He's sound. Very sound.
That was amazing!! Just be safe!! 🙏😇👏👍
Good Boy Oliver! Once he understood what you wanted and that the obstacles weren't going to hurt him (except for the scary "flour") he did good. He looks happy in harness & pulling the cart...his ears are up and flicking back & forth to listen to you. The blinders don't seem to bother him anymore as he knows you're back there with voice commands. Oliver gets a Gold Star and JR gets to share it with him. God bless.....
He's so amazing. It's his first time giving any objection and considering all that he's already accomplished, he did just about as perfectly as could have been asked for. It was a success for both of you.
Great job. Try the opposite direction? Funny about the flour ring😅. How bout a hula hoop? Maybe some plastic balls hanging instead of the tarp. A truck with air brakes sent my horse straight up one time. Maybe sometime tap a horn as he passes or everyone start clapping suddenly. Just some thoughts. Boy, he sure learns quick. 😊

Start with a noise like an sir horn at a DISTANCE. Ideally, while he is eating or doing something he enjoys.
He's looking so pretty and did so well for the first time! His feathers are nice and white to❤❤❤ well done y'all
May have to keep using voice commands to teach him the difference of when you want him to turn and when you want him to flex. Like say flex when flexing and the turn commands when turning.
Lol 😂. It’s his first attempt; he needs a break on that one……he’s just a baby learning his skills still. I love Oliver, he’s still the best young horse just trying to his best for ya. ❤.
My horse used to be afraid of small black pools of water on asphalt as if he would fall into a bottomless pit if he were to walk through it. I'd also have to back him through a tight opening like in a hedge. He did get better with age and experience thank heavens. So fun to watch Oliver's and J.R.'s progress and confidence grow.
He is wise and kind beyound his years. ❤ u Oliver. 😘
Oliver is doing Great!! Very proud of both his accomplishments on the obstacle course and of JR's patience with him! Looking forward to seeing more and any exciting news for Oliver! Thank you!!
JR, a lot of horses trained to drive on the road have trouble with white road markings. So it's not anything you're doing wrong. Just thought you'd appreciate some good information about those flour circles. Your friend, the Retired Paramedic and Horse Trainer in Ontario, Canada, Jenn 💖 🇨🇦
Thank U for sharing Oliver's training with us❣️Good job Oliver & JR for your first time❣️🐴🥰
One thing for sure is Oliver has a good mind set with him no doubt. I think he will be a great cart horse in no time. Keep up the great work Jr. and family, your training is definitely showing improvement on every video.
I absolutely loved watching this. When Oliver is thoroughly trained, you are going to have a fabulous Clydesdale that will be very well conditioned to be in out amongst the public. I noticed a bit of his confusion. Repetition will remedy that. Becoming familiar with the flour on the ground will also get him accustomed to seeing the guidelines/lane markers/ and arrows painted on road surfaces (parades?). Loved the mattress instant replay! Great job Oliver! Did he get a cookie after all of that?

I was wondering if something might've happened at the Amish place he came from with Oliver's initial fear of the flour circles. Flour used at that place might've not been a benign item 🤔 This obstacle course training with you, Oliver, and the fam was just stellar, JR! Oliver trusts you so much! And, Issac is such a helpful sweetheart growing so fast! Thoroughly enjoyed watching this! Oh heck, everything on your channel is just spectacular! Can't hardly wait to see the video you are working on right now! 😊 🐴💖💯
I enjoyed watching Oliver pulling you and the cart. He is so calm and really wants to please you. ❤
oliver looks sooo handsom with his wintercoat comming out, en hes a real stud infront of the cart :)
I didn't realise he was so young, that's so sad that he ended up at auction so sick, so young. I've watched on and off for a while, it's so lovely to see him blossom. By the time you're finished with him, he'll be a super confident Mr Oliver and you can already see how happy he is. ♥️😎🐴
Nice job and thank you for keeping it real!!!
Made me chuckle every time in the early shots when Oliver came through the tarp, the GATE for escaping was RIGHT there. Guess it took a few trips for Oliver to know it was shut! Good learning!
He is a fine looking horse now. When I think of the condition you first found him in, it is truely incredible how much you have saved him.
So sweet to see the trust & love Oliver has for JR and vice versa. Isaac's demo run was hilarious! 😅 It was good to see Jewel, she is so beautiful.
Great session with Oliver. As a suggestion obstacle, maybe put some bails of hay on either of the mattress you have on the ground to simulate a bridge. That way if you do encounter a bridge or something like that, Oliver will be comfortable crossing it. I really love how patient you are with all the horses you train.
It is the first time that I se you , mama, side beside with your son, you will never be able to denied he is yours ! 😂😂😂❤❤❤❤❤
What an awesome DIY obstacle course!
Hey JR! I wondered about Oliver's head turning. Now, it makes sense. It was great watching. The RING OF DEATH-- FLOUR!😂 Bless his heart. Oliver was: "OH, HE** NO!" Lol. You both are becoming a great team.❤ Good 👍 job, Issac w the run through!
I think everyone did a good job. Oliver did good getting the tire pinned against the fence post as it give you a chance to do a real problem. Very good video ❤❤❤❤
Oliver wasn't sure about those obstacles but he learned quickly 🎉. Great job.
