this is such a great video and I love it. I'm a member of westernaires and it drives me up a wall when people tell me it's not hard and the horse does all the work. Ugh I show this video to people who disagree with me.

Amazing! Some3one had to say it! I started riding with drill when i had just turned 12 and it was one of my best decisions i have ever made. It helped me bond with a new horse, and new people. Honestly if I didn’t have horses in my life I would’ve been in some very bad situations. Drill even helped with my jumping! I used a new horse when i started that hadn’t been worked in years and helped him to get fit and work better with me! If someone ever said you’re just sitting there, i would probably never talk to them again.

It is SO hard! Especially if you have a lazy horse, or a horse that is being retrained, or a teammate who is having difficulties. But you have to get through it as a team, both as a horse and rider team, and a team with everyone else in the arena.

I was involved in drill for over 10 years with my wife and sister and her daughter. It takes good horsemanship and a good horse to be safe. I did the music and the video for the team. Our team carried flags so the horses had to be finished enough to neck rein. It can be dangerous for both rider and horse. We traveled out of state for competitions did local rodeos and our own state competition. The team practiced twice a week. Those horse put on many many miles in a season. Counting on teammates to be where they are suppose to be just adds to the fun and excitement of clean runs. They were state champions several years and we make many many good friends over the years.

This is awesome, I'm in drill team I the youngest but the leader. Last year we had a horse try to bolt and jump the fence to get out but we held strong and won 1st in finals. The video is correct about holding the flag with 15 other people. Let me put it this way the oldest girl on my team was 17. I'm only 12 and the leader. The groups are made based of speed and communication. We had three 19 year old horse and a 20 year old. While I was on a 4 year old. The reason we won is because during our last show my horse slipped and fell with me on her. She laid there and I acted like it was our job. Then she stood up and I got back on. We got back in the lead and just in time. We had two people in English saddles so they could jump and I was one. So we got to our jump and made it. Our team won do to out team work and passion for riding. But then I was told that my horse was stupid for falling ad that it was super easy. I let them ride after with my team and they had to jump. They relied on my horses neck and fell off during they jump. Now they don't bother me and I have been known as they "Girl whom rose up".

Ania Archblanket That's true, but I think Flynn's point was that on a drill team, you're doing maneuvers that could very easily result in a collision at a high rate of speed.

I'm sorry, but I've never had someone tell me drill team isn't a sport. A girl on my team did say we were boring, though. Saturday I got slung headfirst into a steel post going 20. Which is funny because prior to that run, the girl I mentioned before said she was gonna scream in the middle of the eight, because "people want to see action" and apparently it's not exciting enough without screaming. Well, I sure as hell made it exciting.

No other sport makes you control a fifteen hand unpredictable monster that could easily kill you just by the way your sitting, no other sport needs you to have so much balance and coordination that you can put your life on a bouncy roller-coaster without looking at the track in head, steering it and if you forget to stay in the right position then something terrible will happen, and there is no safety stuff. That rollercoaster also has a mind of its own and if it doesn't want to listen, it throws you off and breaks your neck. If you ride, you are lucky if you only break your leg, foot and arm. In football, you aren't lucky if you trip and don't break anything.

Find out if there are any drill team competitions in your state, go to it, and meet with some of the coach's and see how close to you any of them are. All though, if there is one team in particular you like, and it's a good ways away, like, an hour, it might be worth it. my drill team is in griffin ga and we have riders that are from coweta county, which is at least a hour away...and one of my other teamates and I live about 45 minutes from our coach's house, where we practice. He has his own arena at his house. Hope this helps, or another option is you could probably look up mounted drill teams in Minnesota. :)

Drill team is hard, but not the hardest sport. The hardest sport is XC, Dressage, Stadium Jumping, THEN its drill team. And most of this is talking about all equine disciplines.

van morton you're never too young :) I've been around horses since I wasn't even a year old. They changed my life and I love them for it! My opinion is that it's a lot more challenging when your young since most of the time, you're not gonna have much leg muscle. I sure didn't 😂 Follow your dreams! Go be in a parade and go be in a rodeo! Don't pay attention for the haters! They're not worth your time!

van morton Never let ANYbody tell you that you can't do ANYTHING. They are trying to pigeonhole hole you within the confines of their limited thinking. That person's opinion is external to you & what you believe about yourself. You are never too young to ride. And I'm sure you know this, there's no known cure for horse fever, but you can manage it by spending all the time you can around horses 😉.

oh rly? try riding a pattern like this, and, if its so easy, try riding the lope and memorizing the pattern in, say, three weeks. not to mention riding one-handed, carrying a flag, watching the other ppl, keeping a certain speed, staying even with the rest of the team, not messing up, and THEN tell me its easy and not hard and you just sit up there and tell them where to go. cause guess what? the horse might not listen, they are capable of ignoring the rider and even bolting and bucking you off. i DARE you, try joining a drill team. other than the possibility of hurting yourself, it hurts your WALLET too. i bet your from the city.
