This is the perfect review for us. I also homeschool my pre-schoolers and have had it with our brother printer. After using up not even half the ink in the cartridge, it stops printing and I get a low ink message. I've spent so much money on ink these past two years, I could have bought two new ecotanks. I'll be picking mine up at Costco tomorrow, crossing my fingers it's in stock.

The ink tank system appears to be much better than the cartridge system kzread.infoUgkxciSwynMJ7PnUvvx11rewiu-yFBkZTl53 and a lot cheaper to run. The machine was easy to set up. A small point but I thought they'd be a USB cable included to help with the set up but there was none. I've been using it now for a few weeks and it seems like a good product and superior to my previous printers which were all troublesome HP machines.

One thing I didn't see you cover is the Epson Firmware updating. I have had firmware updates basically break my last 2 Eco Tank Printers. It can cause them to get put into a funky state that is difficult to get out of. I would say do NOT do the firmware update unless it is absolutely required to fix something you find is an issue.

I have zero tech knowledge but I know I'm spending a stooopid amount for ink. This gives me an idea of what to consider like print quality (important) and paper capacity (not so important) and auto feed (kind of important). 🤪

This review was actually the driving force that brought me to buy one of the pro models (ET-5800) for my office where we print about 5000-10000 pages per month. It was supposed to be a supplement to my large black and white laser copier but the running costs are so much lower I might be supplementing it with a second and phasing out the copier the next time it breaks. The paper input tray and output tray are a bit small for the 100-150 page print jobs we do at our office and the print speed advertised is not realistic at all. But besides those issues which we can work around, I love this thing.

I’ve been eyeing those models myself (for home, because I want a duplexing ADF). Did you get a color one, or one of the black and white models they sell? As for speed: if you look at the European website, do the print speeds listed there match our experience? (As I understand it, the EU mandates print speed specs based on a standardized real-world test document. I’m curious as to how accurate it is…)

@@tookitogo mine is color. It's a great printer thus far. I've been very happy with it. My only gripe is the paper trays. They are small and poorly designed. If you fill them to capacity, they will jam. And it will sometimes grab multiple sheets so you'll have random blank paper in your document. As for speed, it's hard to tell because the advertised speed is for 5% coverage and I rarely print with such little on a page. I don't find it to be a problem though. Color is much slower though, so I do regret not paying more for the 5850

I have an epson ecotank printer, I love it. You have to make sure you don't let lots of paper stack up where the paper comes out, or it can jam. Once it jams, I have to run a 'print head cleaning test' and a 'printer alignment test', which is a pain. But it is so much cheaper on using for the cost / price of ink. The ink last really long and is not that expensive to replace. Yes the little led screen is such a pain, and so small. Why they could not put in a bigger screen is beyond me. Has a feature to self clean printer heads when needed. You can buy refill bottles (set of 4) on the internet for about $25. ( Costco charges about $45 ???) Uses very little ink. Despite what was said in the video, it does not have an actual touch screen. Move the curser around until it lands on your choice. Then click OK.. I highly recommend this printer. Less than a $10 per year in ink cost……__

It seems like its just nowadays 2021, 10 years later that USA is having their hands in theese type of printers. Epson L100, L200 and L800 were the pioneer models of ink tank models.

Good morning! First of all, your videos are VERY helpful and have been watching you often for my personal use and for work. I bought the Epson ET 3760 and do love it. Today I have noticed that I have a line on my scans. I know the slit glass is dirty. On this model there is a piece of plastic so I can't access where the black spot is at. I took out the 3 screws and it does not come off easily. Do you have any suggestions? Thanks!

Oh no! Yeah long solid lines on ADF scans are almost always dirt on the glass. Short of “percussive maintenance” (bang on it) I’m not sure how to disassemble it. A strong vacuum brush around the edges may help too. Good luck and let me know if you succeed!

The mistake most people make, whether with inkjet or laser, is spending far too little on the machine up front. I remember back in the mid 90s, when a color inkjet cost $500 and a black and white laser cost $1000 and up. The laser wasn’t being sold below cost, so it cost a lot but the toner was cheap. Nowadays, cheap color lasers are also sold below cost, and so their toner is even more expensive than inkjet ink. High end inkjets have been mostly elusive, but the few that have existed (like large format printers) use much cheaper ink. But nobody is going to buy a $25000 poster printer to print their home correspondence. Then again, most people refuse to spend $1000 on a color laser, so they buy a $200 one, blindly believing “laser toner is cheaper!”, not realizing the $200 laser’s toner costs even more per page than the ink for a $150 inkjet… I’m actually sort of in the market for a new printer*, and have concluded that I’ll probably spend $500 minimum, in order to avoid high ink/toner costs later on, and get some features I want. *My current printer is a Canon inkjet from 2008: as people’s old printers die, they sell their (unopened) spare ink cartridges for peanuts in the classifieds (or give them away outright). So I’m now able to print for around 1/4 the retail cost, without having to resort to questionable third-party ink. Luckily, Canon doesn’t program expiration dates into its cartridges the way HP does…

@@tookitogo I bought a laser Samsung printer second hand, 40€ with 9.000 page remaining on the toner (black&white). Figured it's cheaper to buy those than any other solution. They seems to always be available for cheap (probably from companies replacing them every few years). It does all I wanted, double sided printing, wireless and ethernet support, envelope, A4/A3.

I have the ET-2826 and agree with all the comments here. The big complaint I would add to the review is that dealing with paper jams is very frustrating because I cannot figure out how to fully open up the flimsy plastic printer body to gain full access to the innards, so I end up poking at jammed paper through a tiny slit under the glass plate. Argh!

It was informative. The ending made me wonder what I missed. Actually watched a second time. Left me asking myself, would I buy it? My last printer was an epson. Jets got plugged up. It too had one print head that I really couldn't get to to clean out and it had just the ink cartridges without a print head. Mostly because i don't print constantly so there was a lot of sitting time between prints. Weeks at times. Also, you mentioned the previous cost of ink cartridges but i didn't hear you give a price for the refill ink. Quality of your video over all is very good though. If I was interested in the printer, I'd still have to research other features of it. Also compare it to less expensive hp premiers with similar features.

This is my concern with them - the late 90s/early 2000s Epsons clogged horribly if they weren’t kept in constant (daily!) use. I asked a guy at a store if they’ve been having trouble with clogging on these, since they’ve been out for a few years now, and he said no. If they clogged anywhere distantly as often as old Epsons, they’d know about it. Even so, it’s hard for me to forget just how bad the Epsons used to clog, so I may end up going for a Canon. (Never had permanent clogging problems on those, any clogs have always been cleared by, at worst, a “deep” nozzle cleaning cycle.) My current printer is a Canon from 2008, still going strong. (And I buy my ink in the classifieds, since people sell off their spare ink for peanuts once their old printer dies. So I’m printing at essentially the same cost as the ecotank/megatank printers now!)

I had a Epson 3640 all in one printer I got a deal on at Costco. I liked it but had the same issues you did. The default print mode looked faded and even the best mode was merely ok and used more ink. I finally got it looking good and it ran out of ink and would cost a lot to buy new cartridges. I got a aftermarket continues ink system and I had to redo all my tweaks. I realized it was using non pigment ink so I ordered pigment ink for when it ran out. After about a year of using it when I needed to print something out the heads started clogging. Then the black cartridge head thing plugged and wouldn't print so I bought another setup as it was cheap and I had ink. The print head started plugging again due to long idle times between print jobs and removing and properly cleaning it is very hard. I used to have a Ancient HP 990 high end straight printer, and yes every time I bought new cartridges it had a new print head built in. I also started buying rebuilt cartridges and they worked great, and you could knock out the fill plugs and refill them about 5 times before the cartridge just stopped working. I could let it sit forever as long as it was turned on and had ink and it would just print beautifully. If it did plug I'd pull the cart and clean it up with alcohol and it would start printing again. I finally couldn't find good rebuilt or new carts anymore so bought the Epson wf 3640. I don't trust Epson anymore with my use case so found a HP that has easily removable print heads, instant ink, if you care, and does everything. It printed better in standard mode than the Epson did with all my tweaks and only got better with some minor changes. Ink is expensive but there are excellent quality after market inks for it and with two sets of cartridges you can refill one set at a time and save a ton of money. I got the 9018 Costco version, after being very happy with it I upgraded to the 9025 version that has two paper trays and is faster but the same cartridge and engine as the cheaper version. I think as long as you use Epson printers every day and keep it on they work great, but you can't let them sit the ink dries up and clogs the heads badly. I'd certainly be interested in your updates with time and if they ever offer a unit with ink tanks and a easily removable print head for cleaning I might try them again

  • @matthewlara2801
    @matthewlara28012 жыл бұрын

I miss Costco's ink refill option, they ditched in back in 2019 or early 2020 and even closed their photo departments too. They were having a hell of a time getting ahold of the chips necessary to rebuild the cartridges so it wasn't worth the real estate for them anymore. Sad day. HP then started bolstering their HP InstantInk program where you pay a monthly fee and get a minimum number of pages to print each month and they auto ship cartridges to you when your printer is low. Unused pages roll over to the next month but eventually they cap out depending on the level of program you have. It has the potential to be a real cost savings program if you do a lot of printing but when you are an infrequent printer then its not even worth it, even on the cheapest plan. I just bought an epson ET- 3850 from costco so if I am ever pissed off with it then I will just take it back, even if its 5 years from now, and i'll get instore credit and buy a new one! Thanks for the video guy!

As you know, ink cartridges are expensive. This eco printer is truly with the cost.

Would this be a printer I could use with only my iPhone? I live out in the boonies and the two companies who provide internet in my area are insanely expensive and the internet is awful so we only have the hot spot from our phones. I would love to get one of these and am scratching my head trying to figure out if these can be set up and used without having to connect them to a router. I bought a little HP that advertised you could use it wirelessly and then you had to have both your phone and your printer connected to wifi (not from your phone) in order to work, so now I’m wondering if it is even possible 😅 you seemed like a good person to ask.
