In this video you can see how I made a hanging lamp. It contains the basic elements stone, wood, metal and plastic.
The stone being Tiger Eye gemstones (if you believe the special forces Tiger Eye has, you can sit very relaxed and inspired underneath this lamp :-)
The wood is walnut
The metal is copper - very special, you can see the copper that conducts the electricity to power the lights
The plastic is epoxy
The 12 volts electricity runs through the hanging wires, as you can see the transformer is on top of the ceiling piece of the lamp, together with two LED strips that shine up onto the ceiling.

BUTTERFLY
I also put in a butterfly, and that proved to be very hard. Colors of the butterfly vanish when you put them in epoxy (as you can see in the video), because some colors are formed because of the microscopic shape of the wing surface. There is no pigment involved - this is however, not true for all colors. After making this video I can tell so much about this that I might make another video about it. The applied method was eventually painting the butterfly (= adding pigments) in its original colors. That way you lose the magnificent detail of the original colors - it is almost impossible to equal nature. There are however other methods to pour in butterflies, as I said, I might get back to that in another video.

COST
Stones - I put in 20 bigger Tiger Eye stones I bought from Etsy for about 20 euro. Then I bought half a kilo little Tiger Eye stones and those were much more expensive at 50 euros, but I used only a handful of those.
Wood - scrap for free (my neighbour saved this piece from the fire wood in the central room of the Art Center where I have my workshop!)
Metal - the copper 8 mm piping I still had from a previous project (something weird with a double decker bus :-) and I stripped some copper wire. That was maybe 10 euro.
Plastic - There is about 5 liters epoxy in this lamp, that cost me 160 euro.

Wow. That's a spectacular looking lamp, for sure. Interesting detail about the butterfly wings. I was kinda, sorta aware of the reflection vs. pigment thingy, but I probably wouldn't have guessed beforehand, that putting them in epoxy won't work. Oh well. One usually doesn't look at a ceiling lamp from up close anyway, so it's probably not really noticeable, that they're painted, when looking at the thing as a whole. Well done!

Prachtig en erg inspirerend! Net klaar met een salontafel met epoxy van polyester shoppen. Ben benieuwd naar de verkleuring met de tijd. Nu ik nog een mooi stukje hout over heb ga ik ook zoiets proberen te maken. Er zijn een hoop dingen in deze video die ik nog niet eerder heb gedaan. Geven die stenen niet te veel storing in het lichtbeeld? Prachtig gedaan!

Het verkleurt. In welke mate hangt van 2 dingen af; de gebruikte epoxy, en hoezeer het met UV licht in aanraking komt. Voor deze lamp investeerde ik in een extra dure epoxy van MrBoat, en ik voel me dus extra genaaid toen bleek dat het na een half jaar al geel was. Ik hoorde van anderen soortgelijke ervaringen met MrBoat, en die kregen gratis epoxy. Maar wat heb je daar aan als je project is vern*kt? Ik koop er NOOIT meer. Ik hoor betere geluiden over Polyestershoppen - mijn ervaringen daarmee zijn ook redelijk (al heb ik sindsdien niet meer veel gedaan). Nee, de stenen storen niet, ik heb ze direct onder de lampjes dan ook weggelaten. Bedankt voor je reactie!

Bedankt voor je reactie! Polyester shoppen heeft een test gedaan met uv belasting op hun epoxy’s, waarbij het nauwelijks verkleurd. Helaas maar 500 uur. Kom zelf uit verf wereld waar buiten duurzaamheid getest wordt, dan wordt zoiets zeker 2000 uur of meer belast. Mijn tafel is ook nog eens afgelakt met dd lak, dat ook uv tegen zou moeten houden. Ik denk dat ik daarom mijn aanstaande lamp ook behandel met dd lak. Nogmaals bedankt voor de inspiratie. Ik ben erg benieuwd waar ik tegen aan ga lopen. Vooral de electriciteit en het solderen zullen even uitvogelen worden🙂

Nogmaals een berichtje van mijn kant. Ik heb mijn lamp nu ook af, en heb goed naar je video gekeken en waar nodig aangepast. Zo heb ik de lamp kapjes gemaakt van hetzelfde hout als dat in de lamp is gebruikt. Het staaldraad als geleider was erg makkelijk. Had je graag foto’s gestuurd, maar kon geen e-mail adres vinden. Nogmaals bedankt voor de inspiratie🙂

Leuk om te horen, Dennis. Ik zou graag wat foto's zien! Emailadres vind je op deze pagina, verstopt onder een knop: www.youtube.com/@Onrust1/about Ik heb je iets niet verteld, wat wel handig is om te weten... want mijn lamp blijkt achteraf niet stevig genoeg; hij hangt door onder zijn eigen gewicht. Als hij een week hangt, is hij in het midden een halve centimeter gezakt. Ik wilde nog extra kabels aanbrengen (in de middelste twee stukken hout) maar ben er nog niet aan toe gekomen...

Dankjewel voor de complimenten! Ik heb de epoxy gekocht bij MrBoat, maar kan dat niet aanraden. Ondanks het feit dat de epoxy mij is verkocht als zijnde met UV-blocker, is hij binnen een half jaar bruin gekleurd. Ik voel me daardoor letterlijk belazerd, want ik heb meer betaald voor een inferieur product - en epoxy is niet goedkoop! Maar er zijn meer plekken waar je epoxy kunt kopen, ik hoor goede verhalen over polyestershoppen.nl
