Episode One: Welcome to the Boomtown, Buster (1911-1929)
As a legacy to the 1911-2011 Calgary Planning Commission Centennial, "A Century of Vision," The City is currently developing a series of six short videos and corresponding teacher resources that are intended to instil in students an appreciation for and understanding of the city planning process and the role citizens play in realizing the vision for our community. The videos are anticipated to launch in February 2012 at the Calgary City Teachers' Convention. In the meantime, here is an "in progress sneak peak" of the first one.

What was that plan called? The Mashin Plan? The $10 million one? I think that looked awesome and would've been incredible had it become a reality. Someone tell me what that guy said because I can't find anything on it.

The plan was created by a British architect named Thomas Hayton Mawson (1861-1933).
Looking at the oldest photos, pre-people Calgary was pretty treeless? The trees are mostly planted in the city limits?
Great video. Do any of those older buildings have gargoyle statues?

oneeyedgeek , the original Calgary herald building did. It was built in 1912 and has been demolished. The original gargoyles were salvaged and placed in buildings amongst the city
Calgary was established in 1875, so why does Episode One start at 1911?
One century later the railway does not play any significant role anymore, and passenger trains avoid Calgary at all costs. Another chapter closed ...

Yeah, now Greyhound is gone with a watered down replacement that goes to maybe half the places at best. Pretty sad in the 21st century you must have a private vehicle of some sort take you to where you wanna go after you arrive at the drop off point.
