I enjoyed your conversation tonight. Thanks. I was born in 1941, just weeks before war was declared. All the women and girls I knew were immediately knitting socks and sweaters, but I was too young and small, so I held out my hands for winding yarn. I ran errands and brought refreshments to them, feeling very grown up and helpful. Those WWII knitters weren’t a social club; they were front-line knitters, providing socks and sweaters to our boys - young soldiers whose boots didn’t fit and fell apart, and uniforms unfit for the long war ahead. Sweaters! That’s where I fell in love with yarn 🧶 and with the women who knit it. And with that vibe! Sometimes they broke out in song and I desperately memorized the lyrics. I wanted to be a big girl who could serve her country!

I am in love with both of you and your podcasts...!!! I am 85 and have been a knitter and crocheter at least for 80 years... yet, I am re-learning many of the steps required of both skills that either I was taught wrongly or I decided to do it my way, also wrongly, when I could not really understand the concept... And watching your well-organized program I am, at this age, not only correcting my work or learning so much more from the two of you, other knitters and other places where this art originated, perfected and the obvious need to continue to create and knit... BUT ENJOYING IT SOOO VERY MUCH...!!! At this point in my life I live alone and watching you also brings a profound sense of companionship and serenity and peace... And I would love to know where can I find some directions on how to knit the lovely blouse-sweater you are wearing today in this video Andrea... It is beautiful...!!! Yes, I continue knitting and crocheting and dreaming of shetland type lace shawls all the time... I love you...!!!

To Tell the Truth was one of the classic t.v. shows of my childhood. The remark "Will the real ___ please stand up" endures in our culture to this day. The celebrities were well known to us Americans. Peggy Cass acted in the film Auntie Mame (also classic) and Kitty Carlisle was a beloved New Yorker whose impeccable diction and elegance never waned, even in her 90s. She was multi-talented, appearing on the Broadway stage as well as the Metropolitan Opera and in a Marx Brothers film. Thanks for bringing back those great moments of early black and white television. (My friend nicknamed me Madame LaFarge. I guess that man never read A Tale of Two Cities.)

Besides the podcasts which I have been watching from ep. 1 and enjoying very much, what a wonderful surprise to hear Andrea sing Ave Maria, I loved it so much! Thank you!

Such fun! I’m 62. I watched “To Tell the Truth” when I was little with my Mom. I guessed him right away - as he passed the models wearing his creations, he smiled directly at them in passing. Thanks for bringing back the past.

When you just said you finally heard from Madeline and she had beens missing, and I could see and feel your extreme relief, it took me back to a time when my son was in high school and he went missing. He finally called us the next evening. He went someplace we had forbid him to go to, out of town, and even though he was in trouble for it, I was crying with relief. I will never forget that feeling! I was absolutely FASCINATED by this episode--and I never would have seen it had I not gone back to watch your inaugural season! I actually remember watching the show "To Tell the Truth" with my parents as a child...OMG! What fun this episode was!! Thank you, thank you, thank you!! P.S. Your voice is spectacular, Andrea!! P.P.S. Andrew, Andrea, I do not think there is a podcast out there--in any genre--that rivals the quality or content that you produce!! All I can say is, WOW!

What a great find on To Tell the Truth. I used to watch that show in the 70's when it was in color. Didn't know it had been around for so long!

I love your podcasts, they are quite different, and cultured, I too learn something new from each one. Last summer and this winter I taught myself to knit continental, I'm from the UK and knit English style. I can now knit stranded knitting although only swatches at the moment. I'm keen to do a project though, perhaps with your tutorials help the Baa ble hat. Yes wouldn't it be great if the BBC did a knitting show.

I'm all caught up on recent episodes and am working my way through some older ones. I really love the skill set Andrea brings and Andrew has the best smile. Together you are great. It's so nice to have an intelligent and thoughtful video podcast. I do think you have some misconceptions about Elizabeth Zimmermann though. I grew up in Wisconsin and now live just across the border in Minnesota. I never went to knitting camp at the School House, but I know lots that did and still do with Meg Swanson. While she did challenge accepted mainstream knitting culture at the time she was hardly loosey goosey or devil may care. She just embraced a tradition that was based on long DPNs and avoided purling at all cost. Iceland and the Shetlands are still that way, and I understand is is an older tradition then knitting on single pointed needles. Yes, she did encourge knitter to adapt patterns to their gauge, or even create their own patterns off of general ideas. At the same time she was very rooted in tradition and rejected many "new" things, ;like top down sweaters or Combination Knitting (Western mounted knits/Eastern mounted purls). I love EZ , though I don't knit like her, and I think she should be celebrated for expanding the knitting world. But her vision of knitting wasn't intrinsically less structured or traditional. It was just different then the dominate culture of the time

Kudos to Andrew for his knitting venture. I'm just learning Socks, 2 at a time, I'm living it, along with your podcasts. As others have mentioned your podcasts are entertaining and charming. Bravo 👏 👏 👏

People say to me all the time." You are such a great knitter!" And I say,"Ah, you haven't seen Fruity Knitting!" You and Andrew have big brains and a lot of grit! Kudos to you both!!

I recently discovered your podcasts and am trying to "catch up" on past episodes. I'm a bit older than you and can well remember watching "To Tell the Truth". It was one of my favorite TV shows, although I don't remember James Norbury in particular. I also don't remember anybody wearing "rompers' or "home lounging outfits". Perhaps that was above my family's pay grade! At any rate, I've been crocheting for years and really love it. I'm teaching myself to knit, and hope to try some color work soon. Thanks for your interesting and enriching podcasts!

I had been stumbling around for a few weeks looking for a knitting podcast which didn't bore me witless within the first 2 minutes. I had even asked people in my knitting group and each one they suggested received a response from me of "nup...borrrring." And then I found you. What a breath of fresh air you guys are!!! I love your little eccentricities, which are so charming, your lovely voice Andrea (both spoken and singing), and your interactions together having me laughing out loud. In addition, your pod cast content is tremendously interesting and informative. You have a real fan in me and I'll be encouraging my knitting friends to subscribe. BTW, Streets still make Lime Splice......will see if I can track one down and eat it in your honour! Cheers

Wonderful podcast, thank you Andrea and Andrew. I would love to hear an explanation of how you came up with the name for your podcast -- Fruity Knitting -- charming and intriguing. Love the inserted segments. Like @Marie Ward, I too grew up watching these TV shows -- don't remember the one with James Norbury and I'm not familiar with him, but I also grew up using Patons patterns and wool; I've saved an older pattern book or two, from my mother, in which he may very well have participated.

I have recently found your podcast and I really love it! I am watching everything now and repeating episodes while knitting. Your show is so professional! You are both wonderful (your daughter is beautiful) and I am showing my husband Andrew's knitting. He said he would learn too but we have to find someone to watch the kids :D. I am pretty sure he will learn eventually! Andrea, you get me inspired to knit my first adult sweater - I even finished it for a week. Thank you!

Well, I can't say enough about To Tell the Truth. What a trip down memory lane. We used to watch it when I was a kid. It was filmed in my home town of NYC, and my friend's father once appeared as one of the imposters! He was an accountant. Don't know how they found him. Anyway, this episode was a hoot. I figured out it was number 2 because he had the right answers to the knitting questions. Peggy Cass was clearly very knowledgeable about knitting. Andrea, you missed a good opportunity to point out that Norbury's design with the diamond patterns was an intarsia pattern. That would go well with your earlier tutorial. You should go back and insert an arrow on the filml that says "intarsia."!! As for Italy, that was wonderful too. The Amalfi coast is so beautiful. I went there four years ago, and this really took me back. Thanks again for your great podcast.

I was in the middle of knitting a heel when the podcast I was watching ended and this one started. 8 minutes later I subscribed. That fair isle sweater is beautiful and I want to learn how you did the stranded work. I did crochet in the 80s and thought most things, except blankets, were hideous, but patterns have gotten MUCH better since then. Have a look around, I think you'd really like Tunisian style crochet. It's very knit-like. Thank you for the podcast!

Wow! I've been watching your videos for about a month and decided to start from the beginning. I just love you guys. Andrea: I would suggest you try Tunisian Crochet. It is similar to knitting. There are some lovely free patterns you could try and the wool you are using is fine. Andrew: You are so sweet. Love the way you guys work together. Hugs.

Ah, yes, I DO remember this American TV show, though I didn't ever see this particular episode. Thanks for a memory and an introduction to James Norbury. I identify with Elizabeth Zimmerman myself, but why choose?

Unfortunately KZread has blocked the sound track for O Sole Mio although it was recorded over 100 years ago. It would take many hours to take the video down, change it and upload it. (Typical upload time can be around 20 hours) so we have left it as it is.

I was going to comment on this too. I know this song is available elsewhere on youtube since I'm an opera buff. But who knows the vagaries of KZread...loved the podcast as usual. And I do remember the show you played...sadly I'm old enough to have watched it as a child! Thank you for showing us the beautiful Rowan instructional books. Unfortunately they're hard to come by in the US as is the Rowan yarn, but it's certainly worthy tracking them down.

Beautiful voice! How did you two end up in Germany? If you mentioned it, I didn't catch it. I lived in Germany back in the late 60's and that's where I learned to knit. Your daughter is beautiful; just like her mom. Same color hair!

Thank you for your podcasts, I just discovered them and now you are my best company to knit with :) Because I am totally new, please let me know, how do I get the notes from the episode, where do I look for them? I also wanted to mention, that the real composer of that Ave Marisa (beautifully sang by Andrea!) is not Caccini. "Ave Maria" is a much-recorded aria, composed by Vladimir Vavilov around 1970. Vavilov himself published and recorded it in 1970 on the Melodiya label with the ascription "Anonymous". It is believed that organist Mark Shakhin, one of the performers on the "Melodiya" LP, first ascribed the work to Giulio Caccini after Vavilov's death, and gave the "newly-discovered scores" to other musicians.

I am going through the entire playlist again. I don't know if you will see this, but was Norbury correct when he said the difference between knit and purl?

Please keep us posted on your crochet adventure. You might as well learn the skill, and your idea about practicing on thicker wool is a good one. Use knitting worsted with maybe a size G (US size) hook. I learned crochet as a kid about the same time as I learned knitting, so I can't remember not being able to do it. But you can pick it up fairly quickly. BUT--I'm not convinced you really need that crochet panel on that sweater. The sweater is beautiful as it is. Seems a bit surplus to me.
