This was a great video. I love the tone of it. Lots of information. No sales pitch, just some good people talking about important things during a remodel. Cool

knob and tube is a good system only real downside is no ground....the conductors are not close enough to ever touch accept where it enters a box and if done properly with wrap and good solder joints can basically last forever.....that being said people covering it with insulation and making splices and tapping off it and mickey mousing it causes the problems....

Precisely. When we pulled down the lid in the bathroom and found the insulation black, I was startled! Had previous owners not spliced the wires and then insulated, it would not have been a safety hazard. Very glad the house did not burn down!

That is so true, and that's where all the myths surrounding knob and tube wiring come from. The biggest take is that 75+ years ago 60 amps and a half a dozen circuit max, was more than enough power for even a larger two story home, as such typically one wall outlet per room and a light in the center was the standard, and wood or coal provided the heat. A table lamp, a radio and maybe a fan or two and a clothes iron or waffle iron/hotplate were probably the heaviest loads expected, and the system was designed around the needs of the time. Obviously unacceptable in the 21st century, as such any knob and tube system in service can be expected to have been extended by means of amateur splices and circuits with reverse polarity are not uncommon.

what are you going to do about the asbestos shingles on the outside of the house?

I'm glad you asked this. Just last week I had a client mistake cedar shake shingles for asbestos. The siding on my home is indeed cedar shake. My very first home I had asbestos siding. It was in good condition and I didn't have a need to replace it. If this home had asbestos (also known as cement board) siding, I'd likely leave it as it isn't a health concern when not disturbed.

2 yrs late replying. Beautiful home. They don't build them like they used to. Speaking of the wiring, you mentioned the home was built in 1951, with knob and tube. I thought that knob and tube was being phased out during the 1930s and early 1940s due to the very laborious process to install, and the price of labor vs materials, made it very impractical to install today, and that during the 1950s typically you had a cloth covered NM cable with a hot and neutral, but still no ground wire. Another method i have read about of homes of the 1950s, was armored cable, the kind with the two wires inside a metal spiral.

You've done your research Kyle! In Tacoma it isn't that unusual to see a home built in 1951 (up to 1955) that has Knob and Tube wiring. In other areas it is a rarity to find it in any homes built in 1950 or later. I love your knowledge of the various wiring - it's something that most (including me!) Don't know a lot about and most home inspectors don't explain the different, I'm sure because the primary safety concern is not having the ground wire.

I am reminded, yet again, of just how important it is to update these items during the renovation to prevent future house fires. Educating home buyers and sellers of these risks, was a primary reason to document my renovation. Thank you for following along!

They do. It's interesting that some insurance provider ask about these specific electrical items/updated and other not. But in general, home owners being equipped with information on the matter is key!

I hope you found this video informative. Knob and Tube wiring isn't all bad. But homeowners should know that it is different from modern day wiring!

I get it! After seeing the wiring that was charred above the bathroom (and no way of seeing that in a standard home inspection!) I'm motivated to replace it all. BUT if you don't have the capacity to remove and replace all of the wiring in your home, using GFCI's and other safety precautions will assist and satisfy insurance requirements.
