The way I see it there are two choices: you can produce an image that looks like what you actually see, or you can produce something that looks like you think it would if the water didn't change everything. I'm personally in the latter camp as lots of blue or green can get boring, even if it's realistic. But as colour absorption and light change with depth and other factors I prefer to use a fixed neutral white balance and tweak it in the subsequent grading. Otherwise I'd be changing WB every few minutes and when I'm underwater I like to have the minimum time with my head in camera tasks and the maximum maintaining SA.

A good tip is to use a programmable button for white balance, rather than hunting through menus. (If your rig has programmable buttons).

Thanks for the tips! I'll put them to use on my upcoming trip. I guess with orange filters, you just do the same thing?

I'm using a Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra inside a Divevolk Seatouch 4 Max underwater housing to shoot underwater. Being I'm using a phone to capture underwater footage (which does not allow me the ability to set a manual white balance the traditional way like I do with my mirrorless Sony cameras by holding a gray card up), how can I set the white balance with my phone using a gray/white card?

If GoPro ever added the ability to set a manual white balance UW it would be awesome.

Or at least, had an underwater setting that compensate automatically for the red like the DJI Osmo Action has since the 1st version!

I always wonder why no one puts out fins with something more complex for white balance and color correction. Maybe not the full color checker you show here but something more than just a white fin should be doable?

I was wondering the same thing! a hybrid white balance / color matrix fin. Fin Up ... shoot a White balance picture; Take your shot. Repeat. Seems easier than finding the card and holding it up over and over.
