Episode 29 : Irish Wakes
This month, Eddie brings us an in-depth insight into the traditions surrounding Irish wakes. He speaks about how our relationship with death has changed over time, and the importance of honouring the rituals surrounding it. In particular, Eddie focuses on the games that would occur at wakes, amusements and customs that helped pass the long night with the departed. Arm wrestling, cards, rope climbing and dancing with the dead - all games found at an Irish wake.

Eddie!! Love your stuff out here on the Navajo Nation love your stories Sir.
How interesting that Pin the Tail on the Donkey started out as a game played at wakes. Here in the U.S., we play that game at birthday parties.
Thanks for the upload
So wonderful to have a new story & as always so enjoyed❣ TY TY TY 💖 💗 💕
Great podcast, Eddie! This was a rather long one and absolutely loved it. There are still wakes here in the United States, but I think they are a bit more formal than in the past. The last one I attended was for a friend's husband who self-deleted in a not so nice way and he was cremated. The urn was sitting on a table with pictures from his life from his childhood to adulthood with some of his belongings sitting on the table - his favorite hoodie, music CDs, skateboard etc. There was food too. People told stories about his life and after a while we offered our sympathy and support and left.

Agreed. From Monaghan myself and wakes still how we show our final goodbyes. My mother passed away in 2013. Remember very clearly rule about someone having to stay in the room with the coffin not to leave them alone. Lots of friends and family call directly to the house to show respect for person who passed.
