Excellent video Mr Larry. Scoring & Overlays are not something we all know about. Thank you for the information. Keep um coming.

A lot of shots (like 8) on a close target is asking for trouble. If several bullets open a large hole ( a district possibility), the shooter can plausibly argue that other shot(s) went through that large hole without leaving evidence on the target. If you don't know that a shot is a miss, then it's a hit.

Normally I wouldn't dispute something like that... since I'm relatively new to sport shooting... But I did happen to win a local match this weekend by .05pts.... so yea, maybe it might be important after all!!!! Thanks for teaching us!

Is the "overlay" for .38/9mm ".380" in diameter or where it should be at .357"? Looks pretty large relative to .40 and .45.

Does the phrase "break the perf" mean, literally, the solid cardboard between perforations is torn by the passing bullet, or, is it like "breaking the plane" of the goal line, drawing a line through it, and anything over the line has "broken" it?

Don't shoot USPSA anymore so I haven't seen an overlay in a few years. Don't miss them. We score time plus, if it is not obvious the score goes in the shooters favor. Haven't seen an argument over a perf in years...... Life is good.

I totally agree! Alpha-Charlie was the right call. But I think a lot of local matches have RO's that would give the benefit of the doubt...or least probably should.

No such thing as benefit of the doubt, it either touches the perf or it doesn't.

Good info Larry. A bit of parallax in the video made it look like the overlay didn't touch the perf.

Ack! I don't think I got the first overlay along the perf correctly. I put a straight edge on my screen at 22:40 connecting the perf seen at the top of the screen to the bottom corner of the perf that is clearly marked by the orthogonal line. Then when I bring the other overlay in, it touches. I did win this challenge without much scrutiny by the RM. Sorry I did not get it right on this video. It is difficult to see while straddling a tripod and looking at the screen.

How is the target not there in #1 but then it’s there in #2

around minute 8:55 you go into the rule of any target behind another target is deemed to not be there, so then why would #2 and many others be scored as a C NS. I'm completely new to this so trying to understand scoring and the terms used. I was thinking it would just be a NS.

+Chris Allen I came up with the exact same question. It makes no sense to me either to distinguish a scoring zone when a NS occurs.

+Chris Allen The bullet hole touches a triple junction, where NS, C and D perfs come together. The target below the NS perf does not exist, but the target above the perf does exist. Still a C-NS.

+Chris Allen +L3001USPSA I think I get it now. The border of the white target we see outside the outer-most perforation exists only to show where the perforation is. The brown target actually does exist behind that small outer-most white border. Example #8 is really the only shot that wholly invokes the impenetrable target idea. Shots 2, 4, 6, and 7 touch the outer-most perforation of the white target, and therefore also touch the target behind.

+MuhaloTube Correct. The non scoring border on both sides of every target does not exist. I think it is there to preserve the full dimensions of the scoring area of the target. Like a good ruler where Zero or 12 is not right up to the edge. When the edge becomes damaged, your measuring stick cannot be used. With the targets, if the non scoring border is banged up a little, the full target inside the perforations is still preserved intact.

I just realized you did the equivalent of "the catch" in slow-mo with the NFL. If it didn't break the perforation I feel like you did it wrong as well.

Why not get rid of everything outside the "perf" so the "perf" is the edge of the target and get rid of a b.s. "technicality" to challenge.

+Wes Rhodes He proved otherwise, clearly. Also, the tears hole actually did go to the perf, which shows the temporary stretch of the diameter.

+Wes Rhodes I think what you are seeing here is a parallax issue. The "dot" in the center of the overlay appears to be shifted slightly to the left...as does the outer part of the circle of the overlay. So if you adjusted for parallax...and "moved" the dot slightly to the right...the outer part of the circle of the overlay would just touch the edge of the over overlay being used to mark the scoring border......of course I wasn't there so I'm just guessin' :-)
