Episode 2.10: Behind the Scenes of the Boston Marathon in 2009, 2011, and 2018

In this LIVE episode filmed at WBUR Cityspace in Boston, Des and Kara take you behind the scenes of the 2009, 2011, and 2018 Boston Marathons for an episode that will make you both laugh and cry.
In 2009, Kara finished in an agonizing 3rd place in a podium battle that wasn't decided until Boylston, while Des watched from the stands. In 2011, Des finished in 2nd in a back and forth that had us all believing she could win until the closing meters of the race, while Kara ran her marathon PR for 5th place, just 6 months after having Colt. And we all know what happened in 2018 as a 33 year drought was finally broken.
You get to hear Kara's reaction as she watches the 2009 finishing footage for the very first time and get behind the scenes details from all three races that weren't revealed in their books. This episode is a must listen for your spring race inspiration!

I had already listened to the audio because I was not sure if there would be a video coming. So glad there was and I enjoyed it just as much, if not a bit more, the second time around!

This is 100% the best Kara / Des episode: where Des reminds Kara that her 3rd place Boston wasn't somehow a loss like Kara had felt.

Does anyone have a link to the full 2018 women's marathon? I watched it a few years ago again - probably my favorite race I've ever watched - but it seems to have disappeared from the internet

Congratulations Des! Can you reconcile the two things you said about the need to be all-in mentally to win the marathon and the "maybe I'll drop out" attitude you had before the race in 2018? Also, during the race in 2018 you said you told Shalane Flanagan that you would try to slow down the pack so she could take a bathroom break. What is the tactic for showing down the pack during a race? Thanks!

Great question. I think in 2018 I took a lot of pressure of myself which allowed me to make different decisions on the day. It’s rare for that mentality to work - but I think having so much experience made the difference. As for slowing the pack down, just would have made it easier for Shalane to catch back up on her own - that plan didn’t work so I found a different way to help her reattach a bit more efficiently. Hope that makes sense!

The tactic of slowing down the pack is like as seen on the track: lead, then run slower pace hoping everybody is reluctant to take back the lead.
