MODERN WHITE SHRIMPS FARMING
INVESTMENT PROSPECT FOR OFWs
Hagonoy, Davao del Sur - Here is good news for those looking for investment opportunities, especially the Overseas Filipino Workers (OFW) and Expatriates planning to come home for good.
Shrimps farming is making a comeback in Mindanao years after farmers virtually abandoned the industry, including Tiger Prawn culture, because of diseases.
With modern farming technology and better broodstocks, the Philippine Vannamei or White Shrimps production is now at 60,000 metric tons every year, a minuscule number compared to the volume produced by advanced countries like Thailand, Vietnam and Indonesia.
The country's estimated market requirement is placed at 100,000 metric tons every year or a shortfall of about 40,000 metric tons.
The preferred destination of Vannamei growers now is Mindanao and this is mainly because of the cleaner water of the southern islands and the fact that it is almost free from the typhoons which batter the northern part of the country every year.
Charoen Pokphand Foods Philippines (CPF Philippines), a Thai agriculture and aquaculture conglomerate, is the leading investor in Vannamei farming in the Philippines.
Using their improved stocks which come from their hatchery and nursery in Rayong, Thailand and their modern technology, they have been engaging local farmers.
Last Tuesday, I and the Mindanao Development Authority (MinDA) team visited their facility in Hagonoy, Davao del Sur along with a prospective investor, Filipino-owned Fintech Aqua Ventures.
White Shrimps farming, along with fish cage farming, are two of the major livelihood projects which MinDA is packaging for returning Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) and Expatriates.
These two aquaculture undertakings offer huge return on investments.
According to CPF Philippines Asst. Vice President Marjun Villanueva, a P2-M investment will generate a net profit of P1-M every cycle and the farm could have as much as three cycles a year.
MinDA will engage CPF Philippines in conducting an Webinar or On-Line orientation on both White Shrimps Farming and Fish Cage Farming for Filipinos both here and abroad who would like to invest in Mindanao.
