I'm a trapper too, but I'm one of those people who says you should dispatch a trapped animal immediately, rather than standing around stressing it out before it dies. the least we can do is give the animals a humane death with minimal stress.

Ya but then everybody would say they probably put a road kill in that trap. But yes I agree.

They give the animal a few minutes longer life before it becomes our fur material :D I think you are sentimental. It is just nasty nuissance animal with beautiful fur and it doesn’t matter whether it dies happy or little stressed... I love fur, and if I were so sentimental, I couldn’t ever enjoy it...

Given that animals find themselves cornered and trapped in situations all during their lives by predators they cannot escape from or other conditions, they are pretty adept at handling a single stress event. In fact, as a trapper who has observed animals I have trapped over and over again, most of them take things such as finding themselves detained in a trap in stride. I have a video on my channel of a fox I trapped that was completely asleep when I came to do my trap check. It didn't even wake up until I was about 15 feet from it. And it wasn't particularly stressed when it awoke. Basically it just blinked at the bright sunlight and appeared to wonder why a human was standing there looking at him. It did however do what every animal would do, which is to retreat as far as it could, face me, and watch intently to see what I would do. As expected, it did what it could to exhibit aggression in the hopes I might just leave it alone. But to say the fox was stressed....nah, I am not convinced it was. In fact if you watch the video, you will see it spent some of its time biting my boot. It was highly annoyed at being in the trap but it wasn't afraid of me. Instead, it hope it could bite through my boot and force me to leave. That's self defense, not stress. I have a friend in Alabama who has videos where he frequently picks up the fox before releasing it. If you watch those videos, what you see is an animal who is pissed about being trapped and handled by a human. My housecat gets equally pissed over someone just picking her up. But she isn't stressed; just annoyed. There's a difference. She might claw or bite to get put down but that isn't a sign she is stressed. Immediately after putting her down she is calm and just walks off to go back to her business. All she wanted by biting and clawing is to get her way! Thus I believe it is incorrect to think that killing an animal in a trap immediately is needed to keep the animal from becoming stressed. I've seen so many animals who have been released by trappers UNHARMED who clearly were not even stressed enough to run away. A lot of bobcats will just sit down and stare at the trappers. One of my trapper friends had to shoo a black bear off after release because the bear didn't leave on its own. I've seen videos where the animal even chased the trapper after release! Those actions are not ones a stressed animal would hang around to do. A stressed animal would just flee as far and fast as they could. My point here is we ASSUME that animals act in the same way as humans might but that simply isn't true. Allowing a fox or any other animal to stay in the trap isn't necessarily adding to their stress level. It may be annoying them, but that is about all it does in most cases. There's also something to be said for not immediately walking up to a trap and killing the animal. There can be reasons why a trapper might decide to let the animal go, such as discovering a female fox is about to give birth and not wanting to kill the mother. By taking the time to assess the situation, and not just killing the animal immediately, trappers can often make a better decision about what to do with the animal.

Trapping is ALL about perseverance! You have to have an attitude that I'm smarter than the animal and set ONLY where you see sign!!!!!!!! Put your sets where they have to encounter them and make sure to use the wind!!! Good Luck!

I think you should dispatch the animal quickly and then do the talking. Some empathy for the animal would be good. I am nor against removing fixes but be humane.
