Yeah, I have a tough time listening to Matt reading. I know he felt bad that he didn’t put in the pre-planning, pre-writing work with Hell of Presidents. But I’m so addicted to his life-changing, free-style riffing. I wish he could pre-write bullets only and still riff, or something.
Ironically this has the same clever editing and immersive sound design that the pod made fun of in NYT's best podcasts list.

I can imagine the Church, had the Reformation not happened, taking this sale to its next logical conclusion: trading indulgences on the open market, with the Church getting a 10% cut of every sale. Property values in Heaven skyrocketing because a bunch of dorks earthside have been making cheese off these dimwits to fund jousting tournaments, masqued balls, paintings of ugly babies, and parties where all the serving wenches have to call them “sire.”

I haven't been able to stop thinking about the portable printing presses that princes would travel with to spread the word of their military victories. It's so hardcore. It's like the 15-1600s version of the guitar guy in Mad Max: Fury Road. Imagine how intimidating that would be when you're about to go to battle with some guy and he rolls this big wooden printing press to the front lines so there is 0 delay between your crushing defeat and the news spreading across the countryside of your crushing defeat. Or alternatively capturing one of these rich fancylad's printing presses and spreading the news of his defeat using his own portable printing press!
@Jon.A.Scholt
Жыл бұрын
Just imagine his printer and "chief propagandist" deciding what kind of typing to use and which fancy designs they wanted to use around the title and which swanky borders they'd use. Carrying the press around would be a huge pain, but all of the metal typing and plates and all the ink adds a whole other layer. Definitely a huge flex.
Shouting out a shared history teacher in the first seconds of a podcast is a weird way to find out I went to the same tiny high school as someone.

Yes, there was also a powerful Nazi movement within Lutheranism, and the Martin Luther, author of the famed treaties "The Jews and Their Lies"... what a great guy. He literally wrote the book on antisemitism. I am all for destroying the catholic church, but not to create a rival sect of equally horrific dogma. Why jerk him off so much in this "historical" story hour? If you want to make a point about something he did that had a beneficial effect on later historical events, you don't have to build him up as a mythical folkhero. He was a cunt.sacrifice and even martyrdom of those pastors and laypeople must never be forgotten. The Confessing Church, for example, was formed in opposition to the regime’s attempt to unify all German Protestants into a single pro-Nazi church. Leaders like Martin Niemoller and Heinrich Gruber were sent to concentration camps but survived; writer and activist Dietrich Bonhoeffer, who was accused of being part of a plot to assassinate Adolf Hitler, did not. But Luther was not unique in his Christian anti-Semitism. It’s such a grotesquely paradoxical reaction, of course; Jesus and most of the founders of Christianity were Jewish, but many of those claiming to love Him have hated His race and people. St. John Chrysostom, a major influence on the Eastern Orthodox Church, was virulently anti-Semitic; in 1555, Pope Paul IV issued a bull removing the rights of the Jews and subjecting them to communal humiliation. The examples are, alas, legion. Christians deliberately expunged the Jewishness of their faith and thus distorted it and shamed the teachings and life of that 1st-century Jewish preacher from Galilee. It’s a birth defect of the historic church, and it didn’t take very long for early Christian leaders to join the club-and while Luther did not codify his hatreds into tangible church policy, he left a heritage of antagonism and hostility all the same.

After listening to this I sent the following message to my son, who had alerted me to "God - Hell On Earth". [In short I enjoyed this very much. Thank you.] "Finally listened to all of that first episode of 'Hell on Earth' - it was very entertaining and very interesting. I had to smile when - knowing how they introduced Luther as if he were their great historical hero - they really take him down later for his very human foibles and hypocrisy - e.g. his focus on having the "args", so why can't they see it? A lesson in the human condition that has always applied, and applies now. Reasoning and having a decent coherent argument are essential, but it does not represent the total answer to solving human problems. I did have one very minor quibble with a bald statement that went something like - there is absolutely no scriptural justification for the institutional sacrament called the 'Eucharist'. I would have thought that there is easily enough content in the 'new testament' to have been used ever since it was written to support the 'Eucharist'. Mind you I'm not making that an argument from me, I'm just disputing the accuracy of their statement claiming no scriptural justification. Just did a quick search: The story of the institution of the Eucharist by Jesus on the night before his Crucifixion is reported in the Synoptic Gospels (Matthew 26:26-28; Mark 14:22-24; and Luke 22:17-20) and in the First Letter of Paul to the Corinthians (I Corinthians 11:23-25). One of the key differences between Lutherans and Calvinists is the issue of predestination. Lutherans believe in single predestination and Calvinists believe in double predestination. The Lutheran position is that a human being cannot have the saving faith in Christ without the Holy Spirit actually giving it to somebody. This means nobody can make a choice for Christ. However a person once given the saving faith can still turn it away. The Calvinist position is that not only does God give you the saving faith but you can also never turn away. This means God picks who goes to heaven and who goes to hell. The Lutheran position is that Gods grace is given through the word of God whereas the Calvinist position is that Gods grave is given independent of Gods word

Without human agency, there's no human culpability. So the basis of divine judgement falls apart and winding up in hell or heaven becomes entirely arbitrary. And then there's the simple fact that having God consign people to hell, especially for actions or beliefs they never had a choice about, catastrophically defames God and prevents any resolution of the problem of theodicy. And heaven and hell as eternal afterlife destinations is unBiblical and contradicts the very concept of resurrection and all its consequences, such as the specific future victory and completion of the kingdom of God on earth and the manifestation of heaven on earth.
