EPISODE 01: EROSIE

Jeroen Erosie (b.1976, Netherlands) is an abstract painter.
Throughout the years, his visual language has developed into a unique blend of abstract shapes carefully distilled from gestural lettering of graffiti, pictorial quality of illustration, and reduced geometric forms of graphic design.
Jeroen says that there were two art schools in his life, equally paying respect to his graffiti background alongside Willem de Kooning Academie in Rotterdam. Gesture, illegality, originality and even restraints of graffiti played a significant role in development of his artistic practice. Even more than that, a distinctly recognizable manner that we now associate with Erosie, sprang out as a reaction against graffiti dogma and ambivalence of street art.
There is a particular logic of how Erosie approaches his practice and, on a smaller scale, this logic is manifested in the way he works with sketches: “it’s really important to have it linked to what I was doing before. But also to want a change. And to allow change. And to allow failure”, the artist explains. Thus, every step is a reaction to the previous one, so that Erosie’s oeuvre could be seen as a chain of numerous attempts in the pursuit of freedom.

very inspiring!! love the approach not to correspond to one singular genre of illustration / "fine arts" / or grafitty, and just to do what you feel and what fixes you on!! thats the way!

Very good interview. I saw his street art in London in early to mid 2000s, I will have to look back through my photos as it looks like Erosie may have been behind some of the art I didn't manage to identify in those days
