I’ve had to put mediums on my epiphones to get them to project. They are amazing after that small change. They are thick tops, heavily braced, you have to stress them out a little with extra tension, then they wake up.

I have the Epi J-200 12 string. And I have the "Gibson" J-200 6 string on order. For Two songs; 1) is 'Don't Let It Bring You Down' in Drop D and 2) is 'Rust Never Sleeps' in B flat . From what you just played, IF I'm lucky, I may have made the right decision !

@Evil Rev No i see what he's saying... A muddy but thin sound, I can understand that... Like there's not a lot of definition, aka thin... The epiphone is definitely thicker and brighter... notes have much better clarity ... without encountering fret buzz... regarding the non-epi, its almost like someone got a guitar track and was like "this sounds like trash on the high end" then looks at the eq and rolls it down

I went in rooting for the Epiphone but the Chibson came out of left field with that tone. I definitely prefer the Chibby for the sound and look as well. The Epi sounds like a jumbo version of the Gibson J-160e, thin sounding and useful for some things but overall very limited.

There are videos where this EPI sounds like a dream come true and some others where it sounds like a Gibson substitute. Yesterday I watched a video and that particular Epi, I would buy on the spot if i didn't have already a Guild JF-55. Maybe not all the "inspired" J200 EPIs sound the same, so i would be very picky when choosing one.

@@theo9952 I would probably say its about the player, to me it sounds like the guy in this video is alot more used to his "chibson", meaning the action and neck width is what hes used to, resulting in better playing. A good set up on the new epi and a bit of playing time into the instrument itself, you have a whole better sounding and feeling guitar. I had the laminate back and sides epi j200sce and upgraded to the new one. Compared the two before selliing. The solid back and sides makes it feel alot more organic sounding in my opinion.

The knock off sounds better, more full and has a relatively decent range. Epi buys theirs from sweat shops. They want them fast. I have an Epi MB. Ditched crap strings. Had a luthier set up. Sounds good. Also have a Chinese copy. Solid wood. Sounds better. I communicated with the shop owner, luthier, and got the guitar and setup in one. No middle men. No markup. No one beating him up on numbers. His father worked as a luthier at Sam. for 40 years and he has 22 years experience. He does not pay for marketing or charm. Just a quality instrument maker. The Epi is mass produced. Do your research before picking an overseas shop. You can beat Epis every time. And Gibson pays the shops even less than I do when I buy direct. Short of it. I get $1,000 guitars for $300 and that includes shipping. I pay $210 an instrument. Guitarist of 35 years. Former pro. I am not a romantic re: brand. I want tone.

I don't doubt your account, but since I've seen inside several Chinese factories making leather, shoes, clothing, electronics, etc. I can't buy the "Epiphone buys theirs from sweat shops" and the counterpoint that the one you bought from an honest, hard working entrepreneur, is typical. More typical is companies like Epiphone enforce QA standards, whereas lone factories selling direct to USA consumers usually don't. There certainly are exceptions like yours, but most labour in China is exploited, no matter whether it's by an independent factory owner or by someone manufacturing on contract for Epiphone. Face it - the conformity enforced by big brands like Epiphone has more effect on the end product quality than that of a lone factory owner selling to individual consumers all over the world with no "brand" identification to label it as poor or good quality. Brands do help. I think the Chibson sounds thin and lacking in depth. The Epiphone wins by several strides.

UPDATE- Got my Starshine J200 today and it is great! Much nicer and sounds better than my Epiphone J200 and it has it's own headstock design with a beautiful Starshine logo. It is a Gibson Copy, but not really a Chibson because of that. . I will say if you order one be aware the electronic version don't come with the batteries. Luckily i had two 2032 button batteries on hand and the electronics sound fantastic as well. Thanks for your comparison because it encouraged me to get one. I urge anyone thinking of buying a Chibson to try and get the Starshine model instead because it is also inexpensive and you'll be very happy with the Starshine logo instead of the fake Gibson logo.

I think the issue is not whether such a Chibson can be good or not, it matter whether you know beforehand what the quality is. Generally 'real' brands have a small bandwidth of quality ('consistency'), cheap brand require more information to make sure (to some degree) you know what you will get. This is not about physical guitars, it is about justifiable expectations.

I think to any musician, it really is about playabilty, sound and quality of build . I have a Starshine j200 and an Epiphone j200. As far as sound the Starshine blows the Epi away and should more be compared to a Gibson. Quality seems as good or better on the Starshine and as far as looks go, the Starshine is on another level. The fact that Gibson built factories in China to make Epiphones and still the cost didn't trickle down to the player bugs me too. Now these China guitar factories are building better guitars for half the price of an Epi, so who should we remain loyal to?

I'm definitely shocked to see all these comments saying they think the Chibson sounds better (but I do respect that tone is purely subjective). To my ear, both sound smaller than they should given their huge body sizes BUT. The Chibson sounds thin and bright, almost approaching tinny and brittle. Most of the sound seems to be coming from the strings, not the resonance of the guitar top, which would explain its inherent lack of bottom end and mids when strummed. When picked it comes across a bit more balanced to the ear, but still far from desirable to my tastes. The Epiphone on the other hand has a decent balance of lows, mids and highs, and I can definitely hear the top is resonating and vibrating more on it, because there are woody undertones present when strummed and when picked. I still think it sounds a bit smaller than it should, but it doesn't sound thin like the Chibby does. For $300 if I wanted a jumbo, I'd rather buy a used Epiphone EJ-200 Studio, Guild F-240 or Sigma GJM-SGE. For $1000 if I wanted a jumbo, I'd rather buy an AMI GJA-AG200, Guild F-250 or Washburn HJ40SCE, as they all have a much bigger and more resonant sound to my ear, for the same or less money.

What's funny is at $299 you know that Chibson is not all solid wood. The Epiphone inspired by at $899 is an all solid wood instrument. Maybe a solid top with laminated back and sides, maybe... Also the Chibson has a thicker poly finish which based on common knowledge would say that it would sustain less and not sound as good... You have to judge each guitar individually

I've watched this video 2x, the first time without headphones, the 2nd time with headphones on. I read a lot of comments here saying that the Epi is crap in comparison to the Chibson. I agree to disagree here. The Chibson is a fine guitar for a cheap knock-off from the real McCoy, but I think the Epi is defo the winner here, and it also looks a tad better, especially the pickguard. I,ve noticed more clarity and less boominess from the Epi. To me it has more punch and it's more pronounced. It also better in the mids and highs, and like you said it will hold up better in a mix with other instruments. Not saying the Chibson is a bad guitar tho, not at all, but I have my preferences, and your video proves that it is absolutely no waste of money. Maybe a real Gibson is better for sure, but it is not worth the price difference of $4000 IMHO. Great video. Ijust ordered the Natural aged version and looking forward to get it.

Much more clarity and versitility with the epiphone. No comparison. Epiphone Inspired by Gibson is 4x's the guitar. All solid wood guitar and gogeous sounding model with almost all the adornments off. It would seem to be a nice little atractive strummer. No where's near the much better made higher priced Epiphone,. It is Gibson's way of selling a great classic guitar for still an awesome price a over $1,000 with case $899.00 for the guitar plus case extra. Great bargain for a close replica of The Gibson Classic which costs at least $4,500. I have the two new Epiphone Inspired by Gibson J-200's in Vintage Sunburst & Antique Natural. The looks do not disappoint and the sound with Fishman onboard electronics make the guitar well equipt & stage ready. Wow, was it just me or did the Chibson sound way better than the Epi? I listened three times to this video, and I'm sorry, but the Epi sounded like a piece of crap compared to the Chib. So now I have to ask -- were you using the same strings or did it not make a difference? Based on this comparison, I would buy a Chibson in a minute and abandon the idea of owning an Epiphone.

It's same the gauge, but different brands. The Chib has elixirs 13-53 (my favorite strings) but when I went to buy new strings for my Epiphone the Guitar Center I was at was out of elixirs so I got d'addarios 13-53 for it. The Epiphone now has Elixirs on it, and the my next video will be comparing the elixirs vs the d'addarios

Has the more standard depth changed of the j200 Epiphone, it look about 3/4 inch slimmer than previous Eppi j 200 Models , that's why it rings to much and has lost it's mellow sound , I would buy the Chibson out of those two, and put sticker over the name

@@atlasmn2836 It's a good video and probably there are notorious differences between both guitars. My recommendation it's to use same strings and change those strings at the same time for this comparitions. Some times those factors can make a difference for a guitar.
