I have the P-90 version of this guitar, and it's everything he says and more. For the ridiculously low asking price, you get one heck of a guitar. Not so many of the P-90 models were made, but definitely worth seeking out.

I have a 68 Japanese Tele Squire, early 70's Ovation, and a few asst others. Wanted a semi-hollow guitar, my whole life. Went to a Guitar Center to buy an Epiphone Wildcat (w/Bigsby). Great looking, but hated everything about it. On way out saw the ES-339, played it for the heck of it. They had a Red, Sunburst and a Black one. Asked the salesman if any others in the back, brought another sunburst (like Roberts) Finally "Golilocks'ed" it (just right), but it had a little fretting issue on fret 3,4 on the high strings. GC would not set it up free, since it was on sale. I took oit to my luthier, neck was sligthtly bowed. He did a total set up ($100), is now my favorite quitar. The smaller body (than a 335, or Casino) makes it very comfortable to hold. Tele is jealous. If you get one, take it to a GOOD guitar person, spend the extra $100 for a pro set up, you'll be glad you did and happy.

hi Robert. Very nice review of this guitar, very useful and complete. I'm considering upgrading to this guitar as I currently have an Epiphone Les Paul Studio Goth which is nice but this one gives full set of new possibilities. I'm not an expert, just a 52 years old person who decided to buy my first guitar 3 years ago, but love to practice and get some time for me. thanks again

I didn't play but as soon as I got home I began watching the various reviews on the 339. Your review was the first one I watched because I respect you opinion.

Great review and demonstration of various styles and sounds . I have this same model in the same finish , bought it new in 2014 . I liked the feel of the neck and the sound of the pickups , that's what sold me on this guitar from the beginning. Later , I bought the P90 version when that became available , it's a very nice sounding instrument as well .

I have the Epi 335 Pro which is essentially the same guitar only bigger. But I'm really not keen on the pickups.I wish they had put in Probuckers which sound much better to me.Anyway I do like the size of the 339 so I went out and bought the model with P90 Pro pickups and it sounds fantastic.

I was on the market for an inexpensive semi-hollow. I narrowed my decision to this Epiphone es-339 and the Ibanez AM93. Both nice guitars but the Ibanez seemed better build and had a more balance tone! Maybe it was down to the Pickups(Custom 58 pickups modeled after the famous Super 58 from the 80s) which I found a lot better sounding than the ones on the Epi. I don't think you can go wrong with any of those two but if you are on the market for such a guitar you should at least check out the Ibanez. Nice demo as always BTW!

So this is a delightful guitar. I have this. as my #3. It is easy to play really easy to play and still yielding good tone. Should you really desire a single coil tone, it will come close but alas will fail to give you the direct drive tone. Humbuckers have a Lot of resonance that have their own purpose. Nonetheless this is a great guitar no matter $!

I'm torn between taking it in and backing over it with the Charger. It has great tone so perhaps I'll leave it plugged in as I back over it. Yes I think I'll back over it.

I bought one of these when they first came out. Sold it within a few months. I didn't like it at all. Just personal preferences I guess. The neck was way too thick for my taste. The smaller body combined with the 'heavy' neck made it awkward to balance on the lap. Also I found it quite heavy. Well maybe I should have given it some more time. But a thick neck never gets slimmer.. Soon after I bought an older Korean made Samick 335-copy. Thinner neck, more balanced feel, better finish. Just lacking the coil splitting option. In hindsight, switching the stock strings for flat wound strings probably didn't do the guitar much good. Since I switched to nickel round wounds on the Samick there is just so much more guitar in it! You can still get a warm jazzy sound by dailing down the tone a bit. Now thinking how these strings would have sounded with a split coil option...

  • @mariomessina1147

    5 жыл бұрын

matthias pandora it performs similar bc of the solid center block like the 335 - so it’s a marriage of a 335 and les Paul . A Es 335 of course was a great innovation bc it merged a hollow body with the solid body les Paul - that was ted McCarty’s idea . A 339 is a lot newer of course but was created with the same ideas but just in a smaller package to fit comfortably for any player

Here is the deal I had my custom shot Gibson 356 which is the same guitar really so I I decided to go check these 339s out. For the money, ok, But the playability was poor in my opinion. No consistency in the fret action needs definitely worked out and the sound a bit muddled for my liking. Here is the positive If you dont want to play a $6,000 guitar or pay for one then buy this guitar. I would put a bone nut on it switch out the strings erie ball 52 10's definable switch out the humbuckers for USA humbuckers And find better tuning nuts to keep it in tune. spend another $250.00 on this guitar and I think you will be real happy. I may give it a whirl for the hell of it.

It's everything Robert displays in terms of tone ...I really like his demos.... when he noodles, I learn stuff. I bought one used at a great price...swapped in a TUSQ nut to help mine stay in tune ( I was tempted to blame the tuners but youtube wisdom said it's usually the nut...was easier to go that route). I eventually had to swap out the stock push-pull pots which broke a few months after I got it...I'm not a luthier so there was a lot of cussing. Great guitar tho..and yeah..like Regend said... the humbuckers will take good care of you when you go heavy.

Beautiful presentation. In addition to how well you play, I could immediately tell the humbuckers from the tapped coils (even in mid position). As a Chicago fan, I'm considering a model with the option of utilizing a bridge single oil and a neck humbucker a la Terry Kath (whose Telecaster had a Gibson neck humbucker retrofit). This 339 is an easy contender. Incidentally, where are your roots? I like your accent, but I can't immediately place it.

I just picked one up to replace my epi hot rod les paul. [I can not take the 10 pounds anymore] I really dug it except one thing. Why dose Epiphone use TINY frets? Like .045 tall! So now I have to break put that extra set of jescar .057 frets and do the nasty. Very cool guitar......way small frets.....for me.

Hi, Greta rewiew. I Havel a question: as first Electro guitar would you suggest this one or the squier classic vibe50's telecaster? I don't play metal or jazz, and I like vintage sounds. Thanks to everyone Williams answer

What really is the difference with a semi-hollow body and a solid electric? I really am interested in the look of the semi ie loving acoustic and considering perhaps purchasing.

+Jbeliski a solid has nothing hollow... it's solid! A semi hollow usually has solid a block of wood running through the center of the body, but hollow "wings" on the sides (where the F holes are).

+Jbeliski There's a little difference in the sound! If you play a solid mahogany LP you get a darker tone! If you play a semihollow maple 335 you get a brighter tone plus there's the acoustic resonance inside the semihollow body that get's amplified on the pickups!

Hard to describe the difference, wider and airy-er perhaps, the air inside does something but I cant find a way to describe it. I have p90s which came on my first and only semi hollow, so not sure how much of that was due to p90s.

There are chambered solid bodies. Semi's usually have F-holes.

Could you drop a couple 57 classics or burstbuckers in this guitar without any need to modify the pickup cutouts?

I think you can, however, an advice, if you are not going to put 4-wire conductor pickups (i.e Gibson Quick Connect series pickups), you are going to have problems with wiring, and even solving those, you may have to change (don't know if you can just modify them) the pots to regular pots with no coiltap, losing the coilsplit function because you need the 4-wire to use coilsplit. At least, that's what happened with my G400 Pro SG when I put on a Quick Connect Gibson Angus Young Signature pickup. Had trouble with the volume control until I changed the pots, losing the coilsplit function (and solving the volume control problem)

Thanks for the response. I guess the issue is how important the coilsplit function is to the player...@@TheKait921

@@johnpower2018 yeah, I liked it but I prefer having a better sounding pickup. "Pro" series epiphones are beasts once you change the pickups and put in a bone nut
