Yes, it's over. But, the body of work stands as one of the greatest stories ever told. Your ability in delivery, humor, and story selection (over 700 years of history things had to be chosen for summary or for details) provides one heck of a story. The music and pictures were pretty good also. You're a great storyteller, Nitin, looking forward to the Age of Discovery.

This was a wonderful send-off to this chapter in Spanish history. I don't think I've ever followed a series as "religiously" for a lack of a better word than this one. This was hands down the sigle best historical series I've ever seen, not just on KZread but anywhere. I'm very excited to cover the age of discovery. It has fascinated me ever since I first learned about the 16th century explorers and conquistadors during my 5th grade history class. I know you'll do it justice in your typical balanced, factual, and entertaining Flashpoint fashion. Thank you, and we await eagerly

I don't see Isabella or Ferdinand as a villain or Monsters, I see them as two people who had to make the HARD choices most of us don't even understand. The Iberian Peninsula had been wracked by near constant religious war for almost 8 hundred years. Their expulsion and forced conversions were sadly necessary to end the bloodshed. Like dropping the bomb on Hiroshima by killing a few thousand we saved Millions so to by expelling the Jews and Muslims who didn't convert they stopped future rebellions and pogroms leading to a Golden age for Spain. Was it perfect???? Of course not it was a horrible thing to do but unfortunately it had to be done and it was necessary. Such a sad world we live in that such Hard decisions must be made but this isn't the kingdom of Heaven we have troubles here and they must be solved one way or another 😢

@@gorkaalbizu9226 the Ottomans in the first centuries of their rule were not religious fanatics neither were Isabella and Ferdinand they used Religion as a unifying force in Spain. The Ottomans were even called Friends for much of their early history by the Eastern Romans ...that turned out badly. It wasn't till after Suleiman the Magnificent that the Ottomans really sunk into Religious fanaticism which lead to their turning away from new technologies that cost them their edge against their fight against the Christian West. Which had become less religiously fanatical and more willing to embrace technology which lead to the west reclaiming the Balkans and the Ottomans slow but steady decline.

@@loslobos786 Nevertheless, the berbery pirats kindnapped and enslaved estimated 2 million people from the shores of western medirerranean. In that context muslims in Iberia were considered a potential threat, that proved true, some decades later in the Alpujarras rebellion, where Otomas were called for their rescue.

I’m not Spanish and I’m aware of the horrors that followed, but I’m still kinda proud of the Reconquista, idek why. Maybe it’s because of sheer chaos and privations the Christians went through for centuries until their ultimate victory .

I guess it's a point of view on conquest, especially when it halted the Islamic expansion. But these Christians went on to commit the worse genocide by killing native American cultures. That's nothing to be proud of. But a part of, the next part this history. If your religious it can be hard to compensate, and easier to ignore what happens by the Conquistadors.

What an epic journey this has been, and I'm glad I've been able to experience it since the beginning. A new chapter is about to begin, and I am absolutely excited for our adventure to the New World, especially with a phenomenal narrator to guide us through. Thinking back to your first episode in the War of the Worlds series, I recall you originally intended to talk about Cortes in the Americas initially, but in order to get the full scope and context of his mindset and the time period, you ended up starting from the Early Islamic conquests instead. This unexpected detour would put the Fourth Crusade to shame, though unlike them we actually reached our destination lol.

I can both admire Isabella as a remarkably strong, brilliant, and capable leader at a time when women achieving such power was unheard of, and revile the legacy of war, imperialism, colonialism, and brutal religious intolerance she unleashed.

At last u have completed your reconquista journey your Historical symphony and it all boils down do one epic cadenza cheers to the next chapter

I hope you mention again the testament of Isabel next time when you explain the history of the Americas, as the testament it's a document of paramount importance. And I recommend you to contrast all information on the Inquisition as there is to much legend about it compare to the reality that it was.

I've been aboard this ride since the very begging. And now it is over. It feels almost nostalgic. Will you host an AMA? What did you think of this series? Are there some stuff you'd rather have changed? What was your favourite part?

What's an AMA? I loved making this series - but the numbers don't lie - people don't seem to have much of an interest. Hoping with the compilation video it will reach a wider audience. If I could have changed this, I have side videos that cover just the battles. Favorite part was watching what an indomitable personality like Isabella was go from nothing to a supreme force in history

My queen Isabella was bigger than life and did nothing wrong except, perhaps, to be too mercyful.

Fantastic coda to this amazing masterpiece.

The inquisition is a dark legacy of Isabella, going sadly hand in hand with the birth of modern Spain. Some historians say it's not really religious fanaticism but a response to Ottoman expansion in the west mediterranian so the suspicious elements of society had to be purged. Either way it was marketed as the work of God, I think we'll see that again in the new world when you get there. A fitting epilogue. Cant believe its been 5 years already. Thank you.

Thats a really good way of looking at it. Just like in the 11th century when the Crusades took off - both religions became more polarized

My specialty was actually the reformation and while the inquisition wasn’t as bloody as people expect the issue Is all your wealth and assets are dissolved even if found innocent

Well done! I like the tidbit (segway) at the end (like a Marvel Movie :)...I smell a Columbus story in the wind. I hope you get to Coronado (found a lot of hostiles, and beautiful land), Cortez (stole a King's Ransom), and Pizarro (found the "Pot of Gold at the end of the Rainbow"). The Spanish went for the Money (south), and let the British and French sneak in and get all the good land (north, lots of warm calm seaports, temperate climate, a efficient river communication network, vast fertile plains and forest, "and the Rockets red glare...") i.e. USA, Canada. But as I understand the Natives had no horses until the Spanish showed up?

I don't really agree or like how the last part of the video portray Isabella or her religiousnes, specially regarding to America. While all the other Empires that set foot there (and we could include the US) willingly anhilated the population, the Spanish empire mixed with the natives and a big, big part of the deaths were caused by unfortunate diseases brought by the Spaniards to this new lands without antibodies to defend against them, not by sword. It should also be noted that Isabella, even to her final moments tried very fiercly to protect the new natives, give them Spanish citizienship, teach them Spanish without making them renounce to their original language (albeit it is true that some religious fanatism ended in the destroying of A LOT of native texts, a very shameful stain in Spanish history) and made the "Leyes de Burgos" to try to guarantee indigenous rights and freedom as well as to prohibit the enslavement of those people that were now citiziens of the growing Spanish empire as well (there are numerous cases of this laws not being respected, but still). Also it should be noted that the Jews were not expelled because of religiousnes alone, but because they were found guilty of ploting and murdering important members of the catholic faith that were growing suspicious of them. Colón (Columbus) was a Jew, and it took numerious negotiations and 2 years of preparation for his travel to set sail. When he retourned from what will be known as "La Española" ("La Hispaniola") the Queen was horrified of the sight of natives in shackles and with time (after Columbus second travel to America) he was striped of a lot of wealth and titles due to the atrocities he performed on the natives he found, and the "Haciendas" he made were dismantled. Lastly the Spanish Empire will build roads, schools, universities, hospitals and burocratic buildings all along "the Americas" (and the first expedition of "global Vaccination" was also launched by the Spanish Government, much time later on). The cities on the American continent in general didn't had stone walls because they didn't need them, the natives were instrumental on the flourishment of the hispano-american culture and society and they were allowed in schools, universities and hospitals. The huge number of languages spoken were outshadowed by Spanish, the common language and also used for burocracy but the decline and extintion of those languages came by most part after the independence wars lead by Bolívar (who ironically offered the idiot King at the time, Ferdinand the VII for "the Americas" to remain Spanish with some concesion, and that moron of a King declined. Same king who would delegate everything into a traitor that allowed Napoleon to easily set foot in Spain). I loved this series so far but I always see in any English speaking channel talking about the topic the common rule of demonizing, diminishing and vilifying the Spanish episode of "the Americas" when in reality it was the first, coming from a LONG struggle marked by religion and even then was the only Empire to set foot there that created instead of destroying (albeit some did indeed Destroy, Nino Bezerra or Pizarro are good examples of that). The period where Spain ruled over "the Americas" is commonly known as "Pax Hispana" and ironically while it was very much true and agression almost every time came from outside (mainly England, France and later Holland) the European part of the Spanish Empire spent all those almost 300 years of "Pax Hispana" engoulfed in consant fighting against (but not only) other European powers, mainly the English (many times not directly, since many times England suported enemies of Spain), the Otomas were a big problem as well for a long time. I don't think there is any ill bias (I hope at least), specially by this channel. But the sources used are sometimes lacking to some extent and in other times straight up trying to portray a very nasty image and uphold people from the 16 century to 19,20 and 21th centuries standards.

You make excellent points - there was some degree of balance and you're right Isabella did attempt to safe guard those that her country would go on to conquer. However any civilization that owes its strength to a conquered people can't be entirely justified in their actions. I don't intend on being biased in any way and if that comes across it is not my intention. I will say that in creating this series - that dates back to the beginning of the Reconquista - I have encountered so much bias in so many sources that I've learned to take a 'middle of the road' approach. Thank you again for such a strong comment. At the same time, also be careful when you look at the good a civilization does. Its as they say of the Pax Romana - Rome created a wasteland and called it Peace

Exile isn't that bad. The Almohads and Almoravids just killed or enslaved the Christians and Jews. I bet some Portuguese sailors are in the next video (Leif Erikson doesn't count as Age of Discovery). 😊

Well that's just a lie. Christians were persecuted - in the early years of Almoravid rule. Churches were destroyed, riots occured- genuinely nasty stuff. And yes, many Christians and Jews fled North to protect themselves. But in any case this is a very short period in the context of Al Andalus. Isabella and her successors on the other hand, were vicious. First of all, not everyone had the money to emigrate (it's not like Castillians were offering it for free), so for the rest it really was "convert or die". Many people WERE enslaved, despite this edict saying nothing about it. That's without even pointing out how even being a Christian didn't save you as Moriscos and Conversos found out. It was an exceptionally intolerant and fanatic state, even by Iberian standards.

@@shamsishraq6831 BS. The Christians and Jews did go North and the Muslims did NOT give them money to emigrate. Those that could. Most stayed as dhimmis. They had to pay extra taxes, could not wear symbols of their faith, could not build churches or synagogues, and could be enslaved for not paying their tax. The Muslims murdered and enslaved Christians since their arrival. Purges during the fanatical Almoravids and the even worst Almohad arrivals were massive (as per the historians). Thousands more died or were enslaved. Muslims liked slaves and the economy of the caliphate depended upon it. Converts to Islam were treated as second-class citizens. The Berbers led revolts against this.

All of your aired criticisms of Isabella starting at 10:00 could apply equally and with more force to, say, Mohammad, the founder of Islam. We will have to hold your feet to the proverbial fire to remind viewers that some thought him a demon, as they no doubt did, if you ever do a doc on his conquests.

It seems like there is A LOT of moral equivocation surroumding this woman. She did great good and she did great evil. Its a conundrum which behavior do we celebrate and which do we vilify? I think this woman deserves much more vilification than she has received. You breezed past one point in a past video where deserters of the catholic army were hunted down and burned at the stake. Just christians whose only crime was no longer wanting to kill, burned alive. She didnt need an Inquisition to be evil, she was born that way.

I think every super successful ruler in history has that aspect where they are willing to look beyond human suffering for their gain or the gain of their country. To me its a ubiquitous characteristic - people of that caliber achieve high power and are ruthless in their control. Rarely do you have a philosopher king (or queen)

Ok, now I’m really annoyed at this video, which I see as totally unnecessary. For one, it is full of “presentism” aka moral judgment for events over 500 years old. I don’t see the need of this caveat. Also, some of it is just plain misinformation. It shows as if the inquisition was bigger and more present in people’s lives that it actually was. The inquisition was just a phenomenon of what was common and rampant in the world at the time, religious intolerance. The idea that someone could be Christian as they saw fit was not tolerated for real until the 19 century. All countries at the time had institutions that looked for keeping religious dissension in check. Also, there is proof of how many people were condemned to death because of religious crimes. In the life of the institution that lasted for 350 years, from the time of 1540-1700 which was when it was more active, it condemned to death 1346 people. Obviously is a very large number, but if we take it out of context, and put it as something exceptional… is just not right. Let’s compare it to other events of a similar nature, religious intolerance. In England alone during the reign of the king Henry VIII it’s estimated that up to 70,000 people were put to death just for not accepting him as head of the church, and same with his children. In France the St Bartholomew massacre killed 3,000 Protestants in Paris alone, over twice as many condemned by the inquisition, and it was done in one day! Religious intolerance was something common and accepted and approved of in every corner of Christian Europe. Putting the emphasis on the Spanish Inquisition is nothing but dishonest and plays into the Spanish black legend, which considers the Spanish culture and history as nothing but subpar and inferior in the qualities that we see as superior today like tolerance, democracy, economy, etc… About the Jewish population… everyone, absolutely everyone in Western Europe like England, France, HRE, etc had expelled them from their countries, even centuries beforehand, so the idea of tolerating Jews was not looked kindly upon either. Again, present day people tend to put an emphasis on this expulsion for some reason, when it was not a unique thing related to Spain. Anyway, I feel this series was mostly well done, but this last epilogue soured the experience for me…

You made some good points here - Sorry the ending wasn't to your liking. I'm hoping at some point to get back to the Inquisition

I respect Queen Isabella. But I don't like the fact that she establish the Inquisition. I think it would've been better for her to accept the other diverse people's of her kingdom as they were. But I'm likely speaking from hindsight. Awesome video. And nice end to a nice series too.

You have a very good point - some of this stems from her desire to consolidate hold on the peninsula with various religions under her rule. Some of this came from her childhood, where she became indoctrinated into Catholicism and it was her only source of solace in an otherwise turbulent world
