Yes! This is the standard first video for newbies to Epica. As everybody has pointed out, the European Symphonic Metal scene is insanely interconnected. The lead singer of Epica, Simone Simons, is of course besties with Floor Jansen and they are awesome when they perform together. I will take the opportunity to suggest "Sancta Terra" by Epica to hear them both together at Epica's Retrospect show.

@@cancelled_user She should do a Sancta Terra version without floor, or the studio version. It's not floor who makes that song a better one as some biased people try to convince themselves. Floor just sings parts that Simone wrote and Simone has sung a hundred times already.😉

With Floor (Nightwish) and Simone (Epica) you got to know two of the great Dutch symphonic metal singers. There are more to discover: A unique singer of her own is Sharon den Adel from „Within Temptation“. They are incredible as well. First songs to listen to might be „And we run feat. Xzibit“ (symphonic metal meets rap), „Paradise (What Bout us) feat. Tarja“ (the first singer of Nightwish), „Angels“, „Ice Queen“, „Stand my Ground“.... Charlotte Wessels from „Delain“ is the next to explore: „Masters of Destiny“ is a must. Delain did a couple of songs with Marco from Nightwish like „Sing to me feat. Marco Hietala“ Anneke van Giersbergen (former from The Gathering) did a great duet with Sharon den Adel: Within Temptation „Somewhere“ together with a full orchestra. Another symphonic metal band to mention is Xandria from Germany. They had for some time another awesome Dutch singer: Dianne van Giersbergen. Try „Nightfallv“. A lot of the Dutch symphonic metalbands are interconnected: Mark Jansen formed After Forever which has Floor Jansen as their lead singer. Bass player Rob van der Loo of Epica used to play with Delain, a band set up by keyboardplayer Martijn Westerholt and he was an early member of Within Temptation, a band formed by his brother Robert Westerholt and that has as lead singer Sharon Den Adel.

@@talia6442 That's so cool, I didn't know that, but it makes sense considering their chemistry on stage. I've just begun to explore Epica, it seems like the female singer must have some very high level academic vocal training, similar to Floors, or she's got some amazing natural talent. So far, she strikes me as being more in line with Tarja's purer classical/operatic style than Floor's more versatile fluid style.

Epica were the first band that introduced me to harsh vocals. It took me a lot of time to adapt because I didn't understand the need or the technique of those sounds, but once I learnt why and how, Epica has introduced me into a world of music I would have never explored before. And of course, Epica are naturally epic!

Dutch symphonic metal band . Simone Simons is the lead singer. Guitarist Mark Jansen does the harsh vocals. Mark formed the band in 2002,after parting ways with his former band, After Forever. He had co-founded AF, and it was the first band Floor joined at age 16.(Mark and Floor are not related). This is the title track from their 2nd album, and is often used as the show closer. Currently touring for their 8th album, Omega. They will be in the USA in Sep and Oct, opening for Sabaton. For more, try, The Skeleton Key, Beyond the Matrix, Victims of Contingency, Cry For the Moon, Kingdom of Heaven Pt 3, Unchain Utopia, The Essence of Silence. And Floor joined them at the Retrospect 10th anniversary show for 2 songs, Sancta Terra and Stabat Mater Delarosa. As you can see, they are great live.

Hello JyngerSlapz! Welcome to the world of EPICA! We are Epicans 🙂 You have no idea what you've just discovered. This band will blow your mind if you keep reacting to them (you definitely should!). This is not some mediocre metal band. Epica is currently the peak of the symphonic metal scene. No other band sounds like Epica. The gorgeous female lead singer is Simone Simons, a classically trained soprano. The growling guy is Mark Jansen, the founder and mastermind of the band. Simone was Mark's GF at the time she joined the band (2002) at the age of 17. Epica is generally heavier than Nightwish. Both bands are symphonic metal and many people compare them, but they are actually quite different from each other. Epica also incorporate elements of death/black metal into their music. Choir is much more prominent in Epica music. It's almost like the third voice or third character, with their own lyrics which are often in Latin. The duality between Mark's death growls and Simone's angelic soprano is called "beauty and the beast". 4 out of 6 Epica members have degree in music and they all contribute to songwriting. That's why Epica music is so amazing and diverse. Seriously, their musical compositions are top-notch. All lyrics are written either by Mark or Simone. Epica can be heavy, they also have a few more radio-friendly songs, as well as many wonderful ballads that can melt your heart. Acoustic versions of their metal songs are beautiful too. What you've just watched is one of their heaviest songs, lots of growls and not much female vocals. In most other songs it's the other way around. Mostly Simone with choir, then some growls here and there. If you liked this one, you will like their other songs too. Can you please tell me your preference? Heavy songs? More mainstream sound? Ballads? Longer epic masterpieces? Epica have 8 studio albums and about 120 songs, so there's a lot to choose from. That being said, as a hardcore Epican I would have hard times picking top 10 songs by Epica. Maybe top 30 would be easier. That's because they don't have just a few great hits. Every single album is a masterpiece with many amazing songs. You really need to hear many more!

After Nightwish and Arch Enemy reactions, there were absolutely zero doubts do you like Epica. Your reaction was great when Simone and Mark started to sing 😃 They are the masters of 'Beauty and the Beast' singing. It is really hard to explain how you feel when you have this massive wall of sound - bands instruments + orchestra, Simone floats above everything and all of sudden Mark goes under almost everything. Musical rollercoaster or something.These frontwomens have really changed metal scene a lot in last about 25 years. Hello! Just watched your channel today for first time and I subbed! I love Dutch symphonic metal bands! All these guys and gals have talent to the stars and sadly American’s here know so little of them. I really enjoy Within Temptation, Delain, Nightwish, but I love Epica. Epica just can bring it hard and deep! Simone is sooo good, and so gorgeous! Epica in a lot of their huge gigs plays with major orchestra‘s and choirs as is within temptation. For some reason Nightwish never does and those concerts with orchestras are so amazing I wish NW did. Great reaction and I’m enjoying your channel already!

I applaud your journey through metal, and in particular the women in metal. This has been a lot of fun watching you experience these new bands. If you want to maybe one day expand to something other than vocals might I suggest one of the best metal guitarists the last decade+ Nita Strauss. Nita has played in an all girl cover band called The Iron Maidens. One guess who they covered. She plays at LA Ram football games. Played at WrestleMania. Been in Alice Cooper's band, and she was the first and perhaps still the only female to have a custom guitar through Ibanez (the Jiva) Maybe a good song to start with is her Collab with David Draiman (Disturbed) "Dead Inside". However that is not even close to Nita's limits. Hope you enjoy

Great reaction! I'm not a huge fan of extreme, distorted vocals but I can appreciate the time and effort these singers put in to master this type of singing. Especially when they can do it without injuring their vocal cords. However I do enjoy symphonic metal with a strong, powerful female lead singer. Nightwish is my favorite but I also think Voices of Atlantis, Evanesence and Sirenia are worth listening to.

Your third "european chest of wonders" will be Ayreon, the project of a dutch multi-instrumentist that delivers great music (metal/prog/folk) and have multiple guests to perform on his albums. Most of which are concept-albums (stories/rock operas). Both Floor and Simone are regular "contributors". ;-) So go for Ayreon with confidence. Live version of Everybody Dies is a good start. I came back to watch this one. :) I love how overwhelmed you were by this. I know you have tons of music on your list, but please don't forget one of the best symphonic metal bands around. I would love to see your reaction to Kingdom of Heaven Part 3 from the Omega Alive virtual concert. That is Epica's equivalent to The Greatest Show on Earth.

Simone is just a gem. Watch her do the Little Mermaid song solo. Watch her toe to toe with Floor in Sancta Terra or in Ayreon Day That The World Breaks Down.

fascinating thing about Épica is the mix between Simone's operatic voice with Mark's deep Death growls giving an atmosphere like Beauty and the beast... their music is obviously heavier with Death Metal tendencies... not to mention their characteristic sounds Medieval throughout their musical career... I recommend The essence of Silence live official video or Monopoly on Truth intro live at retrospect... with live Symphonic Orchestra and choir

Epica is addicting. Having grown up with 3 sisters and my mom, the fact that "women are amazing" was beat into me... daily. But Simone and Floor and Tarja and Elize and Alissa and Angela and Vicki and Noora and ... oh that list just goes on and on. Nice thing is, they are creating music at a faster clip than all of us can listen to it. This is a great time to be alive !!!

Welcome to the Wonderful World of Symphonic Metal. First Nightwish and now Epica... your journey is will on its way. But there is much more to discover; so much more! When you get around to it I suggest that for something a little different you check out an American Power / Symphonic Metal band from Tampa Florida called Kamelot. They are one of the only Symphonic Metal bands that I have come across so far with a Male Lead Vocalist, Tommy Karevik, who happens to be from Stockholm, Sweden, and he kicks! I'd recommend that as a start you might check out "KAMELOT - Liar Liar ft. Alissa White-Gluz (Official Video) | Napalm Records", which as the title says also features a cameo performance by Alissa White-Gluz, lead vocalist of Arch Enemy! Enjoy 🤘

If you follow Simone and Floor also has worked with Arjen on his Ayreon projects. That's where I was introduced to other great artist from Europe. The day the world breaks down.

If you'd like to continue your journey of discovering more of the underappreciated women of metal (at least in the states), might I suggest "UNLEASH THE ARCHERS - Awakening (Full Band Playthrough Video)". They're a power metal band and the whole band are amazing musicians. The vocalist (Brittney Slayes) is a huge Sci-Fi/Fantasy nerd who writes all of their songs as if they were interconnected chapters in a book(album) telling her own epic fantasy stories.

Oh man, I love watching when a reactor is speechless. Made my day. Can't wait to see more reactions to Epica, and of course Nightwish. Will be interesting to see if you check out Sabaton and Within Temptation. Next up, "Sancta Terra" with Floor.

Great reaction. If you get a chance sometime you might want to check out the "band" Ayreon. I recommend the song The Day the World Breaks Down. It's the brainchild of Arjen Lucasson (sp?) who plays guitar, bass, keyboards, and writes just about everything. Then add a few other musicians and about a dozen singers (that are chosen to play specific roles on each record) and you have Ayreon. Very different from things like Epica and Nightwish, but I think you'll enjoy it. Plus, Arjen types things about the song throughout the video.

Lovely reaction once again. I know you love Floor (who doesn't!!) but as others have suggested already, a good recommendation is to react to 'Sancta Terra' by Epica during one of their shows with the lovely Simone here - her good friend - accompanied not only by the band but with an orchestra too - it's something special! Also (if you like something a little quieter and classical) they do another duet together, 'Stabat Mater Dolorosa' by Pergolesi (who was dying when he wrote it - and you can hear that in the Beautiful music) which is definitely worth a listen too. Don't forget the female led bands I mentioned before - Babymetal, Lovebites, Unleash the Archers, Amaranthe, Beyond the Black, Arch Enemy, Jinjer etc.

Would you say they're the same kind / genre of metal? I've known both since the start, and I'd say Nightwish is proressive melodic metal with goth influence and Epica is more heavy with the harsh vocals and very often speed and loudness like in some black metal or death metal bands even thrash metal in a sense as their lyrics are more about society and human problems. The similarities are only because they're using guitars and the female singer

Try Beyond The Black (band), she's another insane performer.

This one of the best live band in the world. It will like Nightwish a journey thru wonderful music. This band Is EPIC(a). Take a look at Sancta Terra its Floor and Simone together. Btw you din't even come close to the surface as far as symphonic metal goes.
