This is an amazing video I love a good thunderstorm. I remember being on holiday in Blackpool back in 1996 I think it was and one night there was a big thunderstorm overnight and it seemed to go on for ages. Didn't get much sleep that night, but it was well worth it.

Nice one Caroline, my wife and I both love thunderstorms. We live in Sheffield and sadly we don't have epic storms often. On Monday 12th June a storm cell came close to Sheffield after 6pm and we had strong gales and heavy, heavy rain. There were many rumbles and odd flickers of sheet lightning, but no fireworks sadly. Hopefully there may be more to come over the next few months. Maybe we'll just go storm chasing. Thanks for filming that great show in Blackpool.

Positive stroke lightning is initiated from the positively charged cloud top and very often has to ground where the earth is negatively charged which is usually well outside the storm area. The normally negatively charged earth assumes a positive charge under the influence of the storm cloud above. As result, the discharge pathway of a positive CG is much longer than a more normal negative CG. The potential that is built up before a positive CG discharge can be made to ground is as, a result, enormous. The resultant strike is usually blinding (300,000 amperes / 1 billion volts) and the explosive thunder is earsplitting - being heard up to 20 miles away. looking at this video each CG is grounding right beneath the cloud base and taking into account the appearance of each stroke (positive CGs are often almost straight rather than forked) and the magnitude of the thunder, bearing in mind the distance from the observer, they appear to be, although dramatic, normal negative CGs.

Aye! There’s no need to copy and paste your google search to reply. There are at least two positive C/G’s in this video - the sound of the thunder in one is a dead give away it’s a positive bolt along with the shape of the bolt and the fact it doesn’t appear to flicker as is the case with a negative flash.

Count the seconds between the lightning and the thunder. Divide by four and that's how many miles away it is. 4 seconds = 1 mile. The speed of sound at 20c is about 760mph. From a sound engineer! We use that to calculate the delay time to the delay hangs.

Stupid fact #167. In the UK, it's illegal to play golf during a thunderstorm! Ask Lee Trevino. He's been struck twice! Not in the UK, but ouch

that's why don't wear any metals on ya in the rainstorm, nothing on your fingers, head, neck, nowhere, lighting loves to play matchmaking with metal or water, then you end up a human french fry(chips, but not fish), you will also end up a street lamp at night too, shine more brighter than;a street lamp ,.......marius(punk rules).
