    White Crack campsite is very difficult to get, apparently it is in high demand. Actually all of the sites near the middle of the trail are difficult to get because the tour companies have priority for them. White Rim has its own Monument Basin which has the most interesting "mushrooms"/"hoodoos" around it and you can walk around on top of them. Lin Ottinger used to have a lunch spot hidden amongst the hoodoos for his tour customers.

    The campsites open on the 10th of the month at 7am Pacific time, everybody has a fair chance of getting them. We had white crack and march and we have it for the next two nights this week.

    @@TrailTraveler A couple of years ago I was on my computer at 7:00AM and by 7:01 White Crack was completely booked for the weeks before and after when we wanted to go. Within a couple more minutes the other campsites near the center of the trail were gone, the only thing available were the spots at the beginning and end of the trail. This was for the fall, maybe the spring isn't in such demand. On the trail we saw vehicles for 4 or 5 different tour companies so we assumed they have a way to reserve the campsites before they get released to the public. So I've been on White Rim trail twice. One time we camped at Labyrinth and drove the rest of the trail the next day. The next trip we were able to get Gooseberry which isn't too bad. Gooseberry to Mineral road is still a long way for one day.

    WRT is a very challenging trail for TC's, I've personally done this trail 6 times in my TC. Very nice video on your part 1. What's the rubber duck for? FYI there is a way to use a Drone in a NP but it takes a lot of paperwork and money along with the approval of the chief in charge.

    You need a permit for one of the campsites to do White Rim overnight or a day permit to access it without camping overnight. Reservations start months in advance. Better call ASAP to see if they have anything in May that works for you. They do hold some day access permits until a day or two before if I recall correctly.

    I absolutely respect the rules there. I would rather follow the rules and fight them from a different angle than break the rules and make it that much harder to ever get them changed.

    For whatever park you want to film in, you find the person on their website and call them. Be super nice, explain what you want to do. Have a complete plan ready. Dates, times, backup plan, route, etc.

    Seems like breaking it into three days is the better way to go. We were planning two days to also do Lockhart and Porcupine Rim. Also going up to Dinosaur National Monument.

  • @TrailTraveler

    @TrailTraveler

    Lockhart is a day, Porcupine is a day, White Rim "can be done" in two, but you will have to just drive through it and not make many stops. I highly suggest three.

    @@TrailTraveler Do you like the White Rim Trail better than the Canyonland Needles district? I have been thinking I'll try to see both, but if I spend 3 days and 2 nights on the White Rim trail I think I'll have to cut the Needles. If I spend 2 days and camp one night on the White Rim trail, I could spend a good chunk of 2 days hiking in the Needles district and camp there one night. Cutting the drive to and from the Needles to spend more time on the White Rim trail is tempting and might be the way to go if I can get the permits. I could see the Needles on a future trip and not be rushed.
