Epic Panorama Trail Adventure: Conquering 'The WU'

"The WU" trail begins near the summit of Hochwechsel and is part of the so-called "Panorama Trails." These are the trails that aren't accessible by lift or shuttle, so you have to earn your way up using your own leg power or electric assist. However, part of the uphill journey to "The WU" can be conveniently covered by a lift from the trail center. After that, depending on your chosen route, you'll have to pedal approximately 18-20 kilometers and ascend 750 meters to reach the trailhead. And, of course, you'll need to make the return trip as well.
Admittedly, the journey to "The WU" is relatively long, and one might question the worthiness of the trip. However, I personally enjoy making the trek repeatedly, viewing it more as a rewarding skiing tour with an exhilarating descent. Speaking of which, there's quite a bit of downhill excitement to be had, as you can also include the Almrausch Trail and the singletrack on your way back to the trail center, adding up to nearly 800 meters of thrilling descent in total.
Furthermore, the uphill portion is surprisingly enjoyable; it's no wonder they're called "Panorama Trails." You won't only be climbing on forest roads but also on singletracks and cart tracks, making the ascent just as much fun as the descent.
One crucial thing to keep in mind about the Wechsel, especially when planning "The WU" trail, is that appearances can be deceiving. Like many inconspicuous peaks in Eastern Austria, the Wechsel may seem harmless. However, due to its exposed location, it's susceptible to changing weather conditions. It's entirely possible to start your ride in the valley under warm and calm conditions but find yourself in clouds, strong winds, and chilly temperatures at Hochwechsel. Therefore, it's strongly recommended to carry wind and weather-resistant clothing.

Servus Helmut, muss ich Dir zustimmen, es hat sich zum Glück in den letzten Jahren extrem viel getan. Es gibt viele positive Initiativen und auch den nötigen Druck aus der Szene. Wir können uns nicht beklagen. Wo bist Du normalerweise unterwegs?

@@gobikeyourself Ich bin rund um Salzburg Stadt am Heuberg, Gaisberg und im bayrischen Grenzgebiet unterwegs. 😌 Gott sei Dank haben wir am Heuberg nun auch einen legalen Trail bekommen. Der ist zwar sehr anspruchsvoll (schwarz), aber super zum Üben geeignet. In Bikeparks bin ich heuer gar nicht gewesen. Zu teuer und gefährlich! 🫣 Mir taugen Touren fahren und das Üben von technischen Trailpassagen aktuell am meisten. 😌

@@helmutdschulnigg5798 In Salzburg ist glaub ich noch Luft nach oben. Den Heuberg Trail kannte ich noch nicht, Danke ... muss heut nm eh nach Tirol fahren vlt. nehm ich den am Weg mit ... War nicht auch am Gaisberg was geplant?

@@gobikeyourself ja! Aber der Trail ist endlich mal ein Anfang, wirklich geil gemacht und für jeden Tag machbar. Rauf fahrt man vl. 1h-1,15h. sind ja nur knapp 400hm. Wenn du ihn heute fahrst, wünsch ich dir viel Spaß. Wird dir sicher taugen! (;

Hi Sage, yes I used the MaxLens Mod 2.0 for this video. You can see the fisheye distortion at the beginning of the trail at 1:12 ... but once you get into the trees the distortion is hardly recognizable anymore

sieht nach nem schönen Flowtrail aus! Mit den Wolken atmosphärisch ziemlich cool, auch wenn vll das Panorama etwas verdeckt ist 🤩 btw hast ordentlich laufen lassen was!

Danke Jay, "athmosphärisch cool" beschreibt es ziemlich genau. Bin im Tal bei 25° losgefahren und am Gipfel hatte es dann kurzfristig 12° bei starkem Wind ... das war dann schon eher chillig. Aber sobald man wieder zwischen den Bäumen ist, geht's dann gleich wieder. Das Panorama hat man aber zum Glück während der ganzen Tour, weil man sich lange über der Waldgrenze bewegt und die umgebende Landschaft ein Stockwerk tiefer liegt ;-) Ja auf Trails, die ich kenn, bin ich fast schon wieder beim alten Speed!
Hey wie lang fährt man ca bis zum WU?

Wenn Du so wie ich den Lift nimmst für den untersten Teil, dann würde ich so zwischen 2 - 2,5 h rechnen für die Auffahrt. ES sind knapp 20km und ca. 800 Höhenmeter von der Bergstation vom Lift weg. Retour geht's etwas schneller, weil natürlich viel mehr bergab, aber 1,5 h würd ich trotzdem einplanen. Zusammen mit Pausen geht schon viel Zeit drauf, deswegen gut überlegen, ob man am Lift eine Tageskarte nimmt, oder Einzelfahrten.
