Epic III but it's performed in a cathedral

Музыка

Epic III from Hadestown, put through a cathedral filter.
Fun fact: this took for-friggin' ever (read: several months on and off), and I decided to get it done tonight just 'cause I had 2 or three panels left to make and it was the night of Hadestown's first Broadway preview, so technically this is in celebration of their Broadway move. It's a gift to all cast and crew of Hadestown, past and present.
I ended up finishing at around 3 AM because the way I make these is panel-by-panel. Every time you see a change in the image, that's a completely new picture, and I had to re-insert all of them with my watermark added on because this looks like a work worth stealing and sharing on Insta or something, and the way I layered one of the transitions and faded to white in the middle meant I couldn't just slap a transparent PNG of my signature without it looking weird and flickering oddly. Me being the absolute banal perfectionist I am, I did it the hard way so it wouldn't do that. iMovie sucks, you guys.
This project was made very specially 'cause this felt like a very special song, and it’s also the song where I found out how to apply the reverb without muddying the audio, so I’m probably gonna remake some old ones. I'm very quickly falling down the slippery Hadestown slope. This is five minutes long and worth 11 references, 31 panels, 16 layer groups, over 200 layers total, and way too many hours.
I hope you enjoy!

Hey, I have no idea why this started blowing up all of a sudden, but to everyone: thank you so much! This took months of on-and-off work and I struggled real hard against my ADD to get this finished, so I’m glad to not only see it pay off, but to see it strike such a chord with everyone. The number one goal I have with my art is to make people feel-especially with this one. I wanted to make people feel what I felt when I first listened, when I made this. I’m glad it’s working. It’s incredibly validating. I want you all to know that I see every comment. Your praise is so shocking and sweet and I love you. 💛👋

I think that this version has a lot more soul and emotion than the version on broadway. Not to say the other one isn't good, but it tells a story more than anything - which was probably what they were going for. It's just that this one really conveys raw emotion and it's more believable that Hades is moved by it.

The Broadway one feels like a performance, because it is. Hades wanted Orpheus to sing him a song, and that's what was given. but in this version, Orpheus tells him a story

  • @coffin_qt

My one major complaint about the Broadway version of Hadestown is how they absolutely destroyed this song in the rewrite. (I understand thematically why it was changed and why they rewrote it when the focus shifted more to how Hades’ actions affected the world.) When I often get to this point in the Broadway soundtrack, I often listen to this version instead. There’s so much more heart. Hades is only a man just as Orpheus, who’s in love with a woman he’d do anything for. They’re perfect foils of each other. And aaaaa, I just am so sad this version didn’t make it to Broadway.

The thing that gets me most is that the melody Orpheus sings is heavily implied to be a song of love. The feeling of love, not just the words. And Hadestown is barren, cold, and (as implied in the Broadway version of Way Down Hadestown II I believe) nobody remembers their name, home or loved ones. But as everybody joins in with Orpheus, you realise that nobody has forgotten love.

*_LYRICS_* _[ORPHEUS]_ Heavy and hard is the heart of the king King of iron, king of steel The heart of the king loves everything Like the hammer loves the nail But the heart of a man is a simple one Small and soft, flesh and blood And all that it loves is a woman A woman is all that it loves And Hades is King of the scythe and the sword He covers the world in the color of rust He scrapes the sky and scars the earth And he comes down heavy and hard on us But even that hardest of hearts unhardened Suddenly, when he saw her there Persephone in her mother’s garden Sun on her shoulders, wind in her hair The smell of the flowers she held in her hand And the pollen that fell from her fingertips And suddenly Hades was only a man With a taste of nectar upon his lips, singing: La la la la la la la… _[COMPANY]_ La la la la la la la… _[ORPHEUS]_ And what has become of the heart of that man, Now that the man is King? What has become of the heart of that man, Now that he has everything? The more he has, the more he holds, The greater the weight of the world on his shoulders See how he labors beneath that load Afraid to look up, and afraid to let go And he keeps his head low, and he keeps his back bending He grows so afraid that he'll lose what he owns But what he doesn't know is that what he's defending Is already gone Where is the treasure inside your chest? Where is your pleasure? Where is your youth? Where is the man with his hat in his hands? Who stands in the garden with nothing to lose, singing: La la la la la la la… _[HADES]_ La la la la la la la… _[ORPHEUS]_ La la la la la la la… _[BOTH]_ La la la la la la la…

amazing that even in a musical that hades is the main villain/antagonist his most basic personality trait is: I just love my wife so fucking much

  • @musicbox6144

Fun fact : hades didn’t really care about eurydice . He had nothing to do with her . When eurydice died , she actually died by a poisonous snake . And like every other soul she went to the underworld. When people think about the underworld where hades is , they think fire and souls . But actually there are 3 places in the underworld . First is where bad bad people are (torture) ,2nd is where the not to bad and not to good people go (regular people) and the last is basically a place which is like heaven .place is Beautiful and only good people can go . When Orpheus found out he went to Zeus and Zeus said he couldn’t do anything bout gave him a chance to talk to hades . He sent Hermès with him and both went to the underworld . When meeting hades , persephone was next to him . And orpheus sang a song that even made hades one of the three gods cry silver . orpheus was known to have a better voice then his father god of music . When hades gave them the test and they failed . Orpheus had never been in any other relationship. He would sing sad songs over and over again . He would also sing songs of other gods story’s . When three girls were mad they couldn’t have orpheus , they snuck at night and killed him . And now he’s in the underworld where eurydice is

The combination of Damon Daunno's beautiful vocals with the acoustics of a cathedral is something so full of transcendent beauty that it's enough to make one's entire soul stir with feelings that words cannot begin to express. Thanks for all the effort you put into this. It amplifies the music with so much more elegance and grace. I can't say enough positive things about it!

i come back to this video all the time. i don't think anything will ever beat this version of the song and i would love to hear the broadway orpheuses sing it, but alas. there's also something really special about the characterisation of orpheus in the nytw version, idek what it is, he seems so raw and real and he has that kind of spark to him that i think has gone away a bit. the broadway version is beautiful but i do think he's a different character, and this song became a different song, too.

thank you thank you THANK YOU for introducing me to this version of epic iii. i thought carney’s was the best version, but this THIS LANDS A WHOLE LOT BETTER WITH ME IN ITS ENTIRETY. now don’t get me wrong: i love reeve, he does orpheus so excellently, but there’s just this tenderness and vulnerability in damon daunno’s voice that just procures him the title of Modern Orpheus, bestowed by yours truly. and thank you very much for amplifying this magical experience through your stellar art as always!

I like both this and the Broadway version of the song for different reasons. (I like this one more but both are really good.) In this version, there's so much emotion, and I love how the melody shifts over the song. In the other song, it doesn't do that as much and there's less emotion, but it does seem more like Orpheus didn't have the song finished completely and just winged it because he was desperate. I don't know if this is intentional, but I do think it's a little more realistic because before Orpheus went after Eurydice he still didn't have it finished. Edit edit: also I was extremely fortunate to be able to see the touring production of it recently and ngl the Broadway version of epic iii was a jump scare after watching this video so much lmaoo
