Bogens, Transformerless 57's, The Booger, ugly modded accidental guitars that sound amazing, holding out from upgrades because if it ain't broke don't fix it, Synth as a hobby, OCD and not being able to geek out and talk to your family about gear, this is my favorite studio tour so far. So many good ideas, I need to watch it multiple times. Keith is super cool!

Best one yet, by far. Not really a home studio, either in engineer capabilities or in gear, but at the same time, technically a "home" studio. As a newbie to the whole "elevate your recording at home to another level" hobby, Keith's technical knowledge, to say nothing of the complexity of his signal routing, pretty much blew my mind. I literally had no idea of what he was referring to 75% of the time, other than to recognize some classic hardware he has. There must be literally miles of cable in that place.

@@AndrewMasters have you thought about interviewing Lindsay Ell on her recently built home studio? She’s a up and coming artist, and it’d be interesting to actually see the full thing. She’s a guitar slinger from Alberta, Canada; but she lives mainly in Nashville (where her studio is); to top that, she’s gone on tour with Buddy Guy, Brad Paisley, Keith Urban, as well as now she’s going on tour with Blake Shelton. Now she’s even having her own tour, too while opening for Blake Shelton!

I love "The Booger," particularly its Frankenstein switch! It emphasizes that having an "original" 1176 or whatever isn't really that important -- it might impress clients, but as far as actually *making music* goes, having something tailored to YOUR needs will give YOU more value. Once you factor in the value of your time, ultimately not going to "save money" with DIY gear; the main reason to DIY, beyond the satisfaction of building something and making it work, is the understanding you gain about electronics and the ability to tweak gear to better suit needs, and not be strictly locked into the manufacturer's vision. (There's a caveat, of course, that making music is psychology just as much as it is physics, so if you get inspiration from looking at the original 1176, there is something to that too...)

Your practicality is terrific ! "Everything is more inspiring to me if it is in front of me.... and things need to be plugged in or nearly plugged in, otherwise you might as well not even own it." How it looks..is all perfect - what a freakin' terrific video. I learned a ton from this one - heaven sent from the carpenter and workshop mind to the one-of-a-kind recording environment in a wildest dream. I slowed it to .90 speed - and I'll watch it 50 times - I wish I saw this when I was 13 when I started playing guitar, the instrument that paved so many of our lives! My biggest thank you goes out to you Keith Armstrong + Andrew Masters for this tour. Now could you do one on roller coaster design? P =]..

Just a note, good electrical designers will utilize the same board with different component populations for different designs/end-products. Just because a board has two names on it, doesn't imply that the final product is the same. I have no additional information on if these two focusrites are identical, just providing some insight to how accurately you can interpret board markings and internal processes. SSL definitely has utilized the same PCBs for multiple designs/populations in the past.
