I'm a Dominican from Flushing. Queens has some good Dominican food spots like Mamajuana. He’s wrong about that MLB statistic, baseball is still mostly White. But baseball is definitely the top sport in DR. I’ve known a lot of minor leaguers, related to one and I’m also related to a professional player. If you’re Dominican you’re going to know a baseball player. And shoutout to Felipe Lopez, I met him back in the 90s when he was still with SJU. He was big for us in NYC and playing for SJU, big for us Dominicans in Queens. Mofongo isn’t ours though, mofongo is Puerto Rican in origin. Mangu is from DR. And Goya is not a Dominican brand.

FYI, for those watching, the Cibao is entire REGION in the DR of which Santiago is it’s largest city, it is a region that is essentially the northern half of the island excluding Samaná. And Dominicans do not say “Adobo” we say sazón, Adobo is a Rican word.

adobo and sazon are actually 2 different things. Adobo just consists (mainly/usually) garlic powder, salt, pepper, tumeric, and oregano, whereas sazon is that list that I just listed plus achote(for color and flavor). Also I've had both Dominican friends and Rican friends(like myself) use both adobo and sazon.

My humble opinion: I feel a lot more could've been done with the food choices and with much more accuracy. 1) Drink: Malta from Puerto Rico- Isn't specific to Dominican culture; should have given Morir Soñando (Dreamy, creamy citrus drink) or Refresco de Avena( Oat Smoothie Drink). 2) Dessert: Tres Leches- Isn't specific to Dominican cuisine; should have given Dominican rum cake, or habichuela con dulce (red bean candy), or maiz caquiado(corn kernel dessert), or dulce de leche with the banana leaf. This culture has near limitless dessert creations, probably one of the largest, so that should've been an easy one. Btw, I think the people have a sweet tooth. 3) Entreé: Mofongo- Isn't specific to Dominican cuisine; is also native to Puerto Rico; should have stuck with plain, ol mangú or asopao. 4) Iced sweets: Helado, in other words, "ice cream", should have been *junjún* , similar to a snow cone, saturated w/ sugary, heavy syrups; typically are fruit-based with flavors of the Caribbean island's exotic fruits,,,,tamarind, guanabana(prickly pear) or passion fruit. They came here to experience the authentic Dominican palate, but are missing out on the real stuff. I was born and raised in the U.S., and have Dominican parents, but even, I, know this is inaccurate. Need to do a part 2, please. Thank you🙏.

Prudencio Unanue Ortiz immigrated to Puerto Rico, where he met and married Carolina Casal also a Spanish immigrant; they later moved to New York City. Prudencio purchased the "Goya" name from a Moroccan sardine company because he believed that his last name was too difficult to pronounce for American customers and also liked the association to Spanish artist Francisco Goya.

I've eaten alot of mangu de tres golpes back in the day. I live in the Bronx, but I ve purchased mangu in Manhattan, Queens, and Brooklyn also. Mangu fills you up so much that you may skip lunch . It's great Dominican food and easily available in many bodegas and most restaurants. Buy early because they may run out. Eddie from Parkchester. Another important dessert dish which I found missing is "Habichuelas con Dulce." It may sound like a strange concoction but it is made of ground sweeten red beans and coconut milk and other added aromatic spices, similar to those found in Chai tea from India. It is a sweet bean liquid dessert with a texture similar to creamy squash soup and traditionally garnished with milk cookies or with Casabe, "a flatbread made of yuca (aka mandioca) flour." It is especially popular around the Easter holiday, a dish deeply rooted in our cuisine, most likely found nowhere else in the world, but only in the DR How about "Morir soñando" (To die dreaming). I personally prefer calling it "Orange Dreams" is a popular beverage in the DR usually made of orange juice, milk, cane sugar, and chopped ice. Sometimes vanilla extract is also added, or evaporated milk used instead of regular milk. The recipe varies greatly depending on the region and family heritage. Americans who have tried it described the drink as resembling an orange Creamsicle (4)
