I'm halfway this Epic right now and I agree with you that there is a lot of corniness in this volume. The Denny O'Neil issues that were published later on had some good stuff in them, and indeed, when Stern takes over writing duties it's a top run of Spidey. I actually like all the extra's in the back though.

I'm not entirely unbiased here, as some of these were the issues I read as a kid, when I first started reading Spider-Man. I like the outfit Rocket Racer is wearing, particularly the headphones and glasses. Hip hop, though already in existence and developing fast, was not main stream at that time, but the outfit looks kinda hip hop / electric boogie from where I'm standing. I'd say he was a product of his time. Corny? Perhaps, but with much more going for him than let's say the Hypno Hustler, who is the embodiment of corny. Having the tech to create a skateboard that defies gravity and having the nerve to use it, even against someone as formidable as Spider-Man, combined with that in-your-face costume makes him cool in my book. 😎

I’ve been a fan of len wein for some time now. I enjoyed his hulk and I know he played a big role in Claremont’s X-men as well. However I haven’t heard many things about this specific era of spider man. It’s unfortunate you weren’t a big fan maybe i get this epic one day to form my own opinion
