    I generally use either a 5 wt or 7 wt for a lot of my flats fishing. Two of the largest bones were caught on 5 wt and they gave a workout , but definitely landed them , 26-28 inch fish that I would estimate over 5-7 lbs. The longtime guide I have used numerous times originally told me no one used a 5 wt there, after a day of fishing he said there were a few souls that he guided that used a 5 there, Lefty and Lee were two of them. Ever since the first time , he always insists we bring the 5 along when the wind isn’t too much. I put the rod in his hands one afternoon and after adjusting so as not to overpower the rod he was convinced he needed to get one. When I asked him who had taught him to fly fish, he said Lee and Joan Wullf were his mentors.

    There's a reason he's wearing a light blue long sleeve hoodie; to blend in with the light blue sky. Looks like so much fun.

    I retired too young, and moved to Belize. A very simple, quiet existence back in the jungle. But the fighting makes it worth it. Smallish tarpon are my favorite

    Amazing footage guys and an amazing destination! I did a DIY on Long Caye in Belize a decade ago and there I caught my first bonefish on the fly. I have been an addict ever since. I too reside in Southern Ontario and have actually had the pleasure of crossing paths with you Mark while fishing on the Grand in Fergus. Please keep vids coming, especially in the salt!

  • @newflyfisher

    @newflyfisher

    Tarpon can grow very large and they have rough sandpaper like teeth that can wear through a thin leader. 40 lb helps keep you buttoned to big fish during long fights.

    @@newflyfisher , I was just wondering, “ now this could be an experiment,” 40 lb tippet is very thick and yes I understand it’s need because as you said there are some big poons out there ! , but not only is it hard to tie on a 40 lb line to a fly but it seems like the fly would lose a lot of action in the water on top of the visual thing wouldn’t the tarpon see that heavy of a tippet ? I have never gotten a tarpon on a fly yet but I fly fish the flats , here’s what I was wondering, I use something called beading wire , it can be bought at Walmart in the craft section I use it when I spin fish for toothy critters like mackerel, it’s very thin multi strand stainless steel plastic coated wire that can actually be tied into a knot , if you had 4” inches or longer of this tied with a loop knot to the fly ( so it had more action ) and it’s thinner less likely to be seen by the poon, and it wouldn’t get wore thru our get busted off , the wire only costs like $ 2.69 for a spool of 100 yds , I think that this could be a worth while experiment and it could maybe land a trophy? What do you think ? 🤔

    I wish “experts” would please stop touching the fish and holding them out of the water. Sets a bad example for those new to fly fishing.
