Epic Big Wave Surf Foiling in Nazare w/ Laird Hamiton, Terry Chung, Luca Padua & Benny Ferris

Moving at a speed where your mind slows things down to gain control... In early 2020 Laird Hamilton, Terry Chung, Luca Padua and Benny Ferris were out with top surfers across the globe in Nazare Portugal to surf waves that come about rarely, if ever. After extensive experimentation with setups and technique, this group was going to go after the breaks in Nazare in a different way, on surf foils that allow for an unreal speed on the water and an entirely new experience. Documented by Patrick Wieland, on custom classic foils engineered by the team at Lift Foils.

Life is not over for you Thomas. Some of us have been born to live the dream but physical limitations come with age. Like Laird I learned to swim at age 2. By age 5, I was training in Lac St. Louis , Q.C. in hopes of winning swimming medals at sixteen.Things happen on the journey that you cannot anticipate.I remember having a stroke in the water at 42, when my workouts were about 100 lengths mid afternoon in Molokai.I fortunately pushed through the side strokes and with the help of a Russian doctor continued my long distance swimming for the entire summer.Never give up your passion. You can still enjoy water sports like boogie boarding, body surfing and stand up paddle. Just keep loving your life one day at a time. Haopiness comes in the "present tense" like a friend of mine said.

they are gliding at such a ridiculous speed ... this is , again , next level ...I think, if we are honest, we must recognize that the legacy that Laird is presenting us , will definitely surpass his life span ... no matter how old he's gonna be ... I'm am grateful for the big steps he , and his crew, have made to put some of us ( at least , the tough ones ), into this new dimension of surfing ... thank God, he's one of these guys who sees the necessity to step into the unknown , and he does it like it was the most normal thing in the world ... well, even balls of steel wouldn't be enough to ride hydrofoil on these giants, it's more to it, than the average guy can understand ... it's a well balanced mix of experience in a field, where ( being rather new ) , you go with trial and error , and do your own stunts ... it's about dependability, it's physical and mental strength , it's creativity, it's self confidence , without overestimating your possibilities ... too much to list, but I think you get the Idea ... Thanks Laird, one hell of a ride ! You're truly pushing boundaries !

I have surfed my whole life around the world and my friend just bought a couple of jetskis. I will probably never do what those guys have done they make it look so easy but it’s really hard training breath control and balls. Oh ya big balls. Yet I am not jealous at all , just need some fun warm waves with minimal crowd and I am in heaven. Thanks Laird for surfing everything anyway forever. Amazing

I just watched this in June 2022 and it's a really IMPRESSIVE video all the way around. Truly great video and editing! I learned about efoiling just recently, so that's what got me here. I don't know who any of these people are, but I appreciated their attitude and commentary throughout the video. I liked how Laird(?) said that we shouldn't separate ourselves due to equipment, and he's right. I'm just a guy in Ohio who has occasionally boogie boarded at Lake Erie (small watercraft advisory due to wind) and New Jersey beaches and body surfed for 25+ years at a wave pool. But I'm still, in the barest sense, a surfer, and appreciate all types of surfing! It's great to see new ideas and equipment being developed that can broaden the sport and bring more people in.

Congratulations to Laird Hamilton and team for pioneering the frontiers of surfing - thank you for an incredible chapter in your story!!... which I have followed since 'Riding Liquid Giants'. So many questions I would love to ask: what special training do you need to ride the foil...? What muscle groups are you mainly using? It looks easier to ride than a conventional big wave board - as if less skill is required than conventional big wave riding .... (or am i totally wrong and it's the opposite?!). You dont show any wipeouts. Perhaps there is less risk because you can use speed like a jetski to go anywhere you want at any moment and zoom out of trouble... ? These are just the comments of a landlocked youtube surfer who had the good fortune to live by the sea as a pre-teen, rode small waves decades ago for a few years and not much since.. so bear with me ;) - it's a beautiful exciting story you tell and huge respect and success to your endeavours.

Epic. Such good perspective of where we can go with foiling. Would have been cool to see a giant pump around monster wave link up though haha
