Most Velvet Anthuriums we see in cultivation today are in the Cardiolonchium anthurium section, Dress, Papi, Crystallinum and such are all in this section. There are a few sections that are closely related or drop off points until further consideration but sectional grouping dictates whether or not they are able to A. Produce hybrids via cross pollination and B. Whether or not those hybrids result in something like a “Liger” where an individual is produced but unable to procreate. Sheffer and Tim Croat have some awesome research on the subject that’s readily accessible. I will say that a lot of Doc Block’s hybrids are Crystallinum from Tim Anderson’s Wonderboy which was one of the first “red” Crystallinum.

Oh! I’ll also note that chromosome count often plays a part in hybridization as well. Typically you want to pair same chromosome counts with same (which is another thing that comes into sectional grouping) but often the plant with the most amount of chromosomes plays the mother. This is why a lot of Magnificum hybrids start as a MagxCrys or MagxPapi because it somehow has double the amount as those in the same group. Poor Sheffer for his Doctoral defense hand counted chromosome count for many of the standard species in the 70s such as Mag, Crys, Queen, Veitchii, Andreanum, etc.

Good detailed video Memo as always 😊…I personally find magnificum or a cross of them easiest care and quickest to size up -as long as you don’t let them dry out…I grow all my anthuriums in moss with some bark mixed in and a leca layer at the bottom .. I use RO water as I have it on hand for the reef tanks ..I have to use a dehumidifier pretty much 24/7 to keep humidity at 60% (too many mosspoles)✌️

🇦🇺 I had no idea about the sections. I was reading about hybridisation that mentioned compatible and incompatible but nothing more. Makes sense now, thank you. As soon as you tilted zara x Michelle I could see that gorgeous pink veination. So, so pretty. Very interesting breeding information too. I'm just getting my head around Alocasia, I'm going to leave anthuriums for a bit... Alas 🥺 I have killed many antherium flamingo plants. When I can keep one of those alive for more than a year I'll take another step forward. 😅. Humidity and space will be an issue. Oh... I looked at A. esmeraldense and P. esmeraldense. I can buy approximately 6 P. esmeraldense for the price of 1 A. esmeraldense. Errrr... I know which one just got kicked off my 'near future' wish list lol.

Memo, great video 🙂 I like that you went into so much detail. I learnt about the anthurium sections from Enid´s book (I like the book very much), otherwise only heard very basic info about it elsewhere. I have only very little experience with anthuriums (I have only clarinervium and villenaorum growing in Soil Ninja´s anthurium mix), but I know that my clarinervium doesn´t like Czech winters - it goes dormant. It was very easy going until I moved it during last winter about 30 cm away to what I thought was a better spot (alocasia Silver Dragon loves that spot), and it dropped about 5 leaves super fast... so after this failed attempt I put it back to the original spot and all was well again :-D Such a conservative plant :-D I dare not to move it anywhere again :-D

Great question! 🌱 Repotting from soil to semi-hydro is a whole other video, but I'll think about doing one soon! 😊 In the mean time with most Anthuriums at least, as long as they are not tiny seedlings, i find they transition from soil to semi hydro quite readily. Hi Memo! Thanks for sharing and lots of love for you ♡ I'm slowly warming up for anthuriums these days and got a clarinervium, since everyone considered it a great beginner plant, when you first got into the genus (would have loved to get a queen, but omg so intimidating! Dx) I struggle a bit with leaf growth so far qwq It's been a month in my care now and got not a single new leaf, but it already came here with a flower... So hopefully it'll get a new leaf soon. I'll definetly try to get my clarinervium in semihydro, since it's still in the soil I bought it in. Have a lovely day!
