EPDM FLAT ROOF & UPSTAND - This one was a little tricky!

It's only small but there was a fair bit of work in the details on the porch roof. Great to have it all sorted and ready for the roof light. 😁

Great video. Really enjoying the porch series. One tip which I've learnt the hard way is to put some lead sealant in your groove before inserting the lead. Give an extra layer of bonding and waterproofing in case the repointing fails. All the best

You done a great job there Tim those form flashing are tricky,We always took a heat gun with us for those tricky bits made it a lot easier to form, they might of improved since and now it's not needed, one of the first roofs I done was on a subsiding extention I came back 3 years later the building had come away nearly 2 inches at the top and the rubber just stretched no leaks it's a remarkable product, I always used to try and sell the rubber for simple roofs and the grp for ones with more detail I don't do it any more so it was nice to see someone else struggle for a change lol, anyway welldone

One thing that might become a small issue in time, is where the lead sits on the top of the osb it’s creating a flat step, which in time the laps can become vulnerable and water tracks under the laps, seen it a few times. But might be ok 👍🏻

When I did our roof, every cut of the EPDM scared the hell out of me -- I was so worried about making a mistake. Like you, I found you can pretty easily fix things, and a DIY'er can do a good job of it. Next year, we will be putting a deck over our flat roof. That should be pretty interesting... Do you have to caulk the seams with the system you are using? We used 'RoofKit" EPDM and they want all seams caulked with their rubber caulk.

If your going to go EPDM make sure it's flease backed not the garage material used in this video! As far as grp goes ! There is a reason boats are made in sheds at a certain temperature!!! EPDM is the cheapest ! Ask yourself before you fit either .. do I want the possibility off a leak in the future 🤔 because i went for a cheap product and could fit it myself ! If so crack on and good luck .

I need some advice ASAP as the plasterers are in Thursday. When the joiner did the upstands of the roof lantern he built it with 65mm timber one side 75mm the other side. This does not work with any ridged foil insulation I can get hold of. It has to work perfectly as the insulated plasterboard goes up the reveals. The joiner seems pretty clueless. My question is can the upstands be done use a rockwool or if it has to be foiled tripled up silver quilt packed tight?

As an independant, would you use EPDM for an 18 degree log cabin Apex roof (7x6m), and would you use 2 sheets over lapping at the Apex. Additionally there are 2 Velux windows 1m sq to navigate - Any advice greatlyfully received. Oh, and do you recommend any particluar supplier/type of EPDM. Thanks

You were very methodical in ur approach but a couple of pointers is always have 4 inches of contact adhesive around any perimeter and when joining 2 layers of epdm you should only adhere 1 side first and then the other as the quick prime is reliant on timing, also if you’re brave you could have glued the membrane first and cut out the hole after but that could be slightly risky, good video though

Small but a fair bit of work is an understatement. Did you use lap sealant at the edges of the seam cover tape? I'm at the lap sealant stage but it took me eons to get here because of complicated corners and overlaps. Can NOT find anywhere information on how long lap sealant needs to cure before it can be exposed to water.

Tidy on them corners. When joining the old roof to new, I've seen it done with small piece of timber ripped into 1/2' x 1/2' , boned and screwed to the osb and the old epdm folded over it and bonded and the new folded over that and bonded and the joint will never leak. I don't know how they debonded the old epdm though.

The lead flashing should have been bedded into the wall to give a 45deg slope on the top as what you have done will allow standing water that will migrate back into the wall causing damp and/or spalling. The flashing joint should have been 12mm x 25mm deep to allow for mortar pointing to the full depth of the joint as mastic is only short term in this location especially where you have standing water. The flashing should also have been set in with lead wedges twice folded, not the bits of lead offcuts you used. The folded wedges allows decent movement of the lead as the differential movement of the lead/stone wall is substantial. I also note that you do not have cold roof ventilation at the abutment that is essential to keep the roof timbers in an acceptable condition - check with the Building Control Officer. What this video shows is poor, but unfortunately too common practice in roof detailing.
